Random normal matrices and Ward identities
We consider the random normal matrix ensemble associated with a potential in the plane of sufficient growth near infinity. It is known that asymptotically as the order of the random matrix increases indefinitely, the eigenvalues approach a certain equilibrium density, given in terms of Frostman's solution to the minimum energy problem of weighted logarithmic potential theory. At a finer scale, we
The relative importance of maternal body mass index and glucose levels for prediction of large-for-gestational-age births.
The risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increases substantially with increasing maternal body mass index (BMI). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relative importance of maternal BMI and glucose levels in prediction of large-for-gestational-age (LGA) births.
Visualizing overdamped wavepacket motion: Excited-state isomerization of pseudocyanine in viscous solvents
The isomerization of 1,1'-diethyl-2,2'-cyanine iodide in n-alcohols is studied by femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. Using a broad range of probe wavelengths, the dynamics of ground-state bleach recovery, excited-state absorption and stimulation emission are monitored. We attributed the observed spectral evolution to the excited-state torsional motion, which occurs in a barrierless fashion in al
A general search for new phenomena at HERA
A model-independent search for deviations from the Standard Model prediction is performed using the full e(+/-) p data sample collected by the H1 experiment at HERA. All event topologies involving isolated electrons, photons, muons, neutrinos and jets with transverse momenta above 20 GeV are investigated in a single analysis. Events are assigned to exclusive classes according to their final state.
Systematic performance study of common neutron guide geometries
In this report, we present the results from a systematic benchmarking of four different long neutron guide geometries: elliptic, parabolic, ballistic (piecewise linearly focusing/defocusing), and straight, for various wavelength, divergence restriction, and guide length settings. In this work, we mapped relevant parts of the neutron phase space to show where advanced guide geometries have signific
Maternal hypothyroidism in early pregnancy and infant structural congenital malformations.
Background. The question is debated on whether maternal hypothyroidism or use of thyroxin in early pregnancy affects the risk for infant congenital malformations. Objectives. To expand the previously published study on maternal thyroxin use in early pregnancy and the risk for congenital malformations. Methods. Data from the Swedish Medical Birth Register were used for the years 1996-2011 and infan
Oligomerization Propensity and Flexibility of Yeast Frataxin Studied by X-ray Crystallography and Small-Angle X-ray Scattering.
Frataxin is a mitochondrial protein with a central role in iron homeostasis. Defects in frataxin function lead to Friedreich's ataxia, a progressive neurodegenerative disease with childhood onset. The function of frataxin has been shown to be closely associated with its ability to form oligomeric species; however, the factors controlling oligomerization and the types of oligomers present in soluti
Linoleic acid, a dietary n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid, and the aetiology of ulcerative colitis: a nested case-control study within a European prospective cohort study
Objective: Dietary linoleic acid, an n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid, is metabolised to arachidonic acid, a component of colonocyte membranes. Metabolites of arachidonic acid have pro-inflammatory properties and are increased in the mucosa of patients with ulcerative colitis. The aim of this investigation was to conduct the first prospective cohort study investigating if a high dietary intake of li
Masked Depth Culling for Graphics Hardware
Hierarchical depth culling is an important optimization, which is present in all modern high performance graphics processors. We present a novel culling algorithm based on a layered depth representation, with a per-sample mask indicating which layer each sample belongs to. Our algorithm is feed forward in nature in contrast to previous work, which rely on a delayed feedback loop. It is simple to i
Branch-and-Bound Methods for Euclidean Registration Problems.
In this paper, we propose a practical and efficient method for finding the globally optimal solution to the problem of determining the pose of an object. We present a framework that allows us to use point-to-point, point-to-line, and point-to-plane correspondences for solving various types of pose and registration problems involving euclidean (or similarity) transformations. Traditional methods su

Antibodies to merkel cell polyomavirus correlate to presence of viral DNA in the skin.
To validate whether Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCV) serology correlates with MCV infection, we compared real-time polymerase chain reaction results for MCV DNA on fresh-frozen biopsy specimens from various skin lesions and healthy skin from 434 patients to MCV serology results using viruslike particles (VLPs) and MCV neutralization assays. Sixty-five percent of participants were MCV seropositive an
MOVPE-grownInAs/AlAs0.16Sb0.84/InAs and InAs/AlAs0.16Sb0.84/GaSb heterostructures
We demonstrate MOVPE-growth of InAs/AlAs0.16Sb0.84/GaSb and InAs/AlAs0.16Sb0.84/InAs heterostructures of excellent quality as observed by transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction 2-theta-omega and rocking curve scans with full width at half maximum routinely below 100 arcsec. Key points regarding interface control for heteroepitaxial nucleation are reviewed and the choice of suitable
The FERRUM project: Experimental lifetimes and transition probabilities from highly excited even 4d levels in Fe II
We report lifetime measurements of the 6 levels in the 3d(6)(5D)4d e(6)G term in Fe II at an energy of 10.4 eV, and f-values for 14 transitions from the investigated levels. The lifetimes were measured using time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence on ions in a laser-produced plasma. The high excitation energy, and the fact that the levels have the same parity as the the low-lying states directly
The rise and fall of GO trading in European renewable energy policy: The role of advocacy and policy framing
This paper examines policy processes surrounding the rise and fall of the proposed EU-wide policy instrument designed to help achieve EU´s renewable energy targets – the trading of Guarantees of Origin (GO). It discusses its origins and examines factors in the policy processes over time leading first to its development and then to its rejection. A first analysis looks at the near-term policy-makin
Density-induced reentrant melting of colloidal Wigner crystals.
Electrostatic repulsions can drive crystallization in many-particle systems. For charged colloidal systems, the phase boundaries as well as crystal structure are highly tunable by experimental parameters such as salt concentration and pH. By using projections of the colloid-ion mixture to a system of (soft) repulsive spheres and the one-component plasma (OCP), we study the hitherto unexplained exp
Exposure, telomere length, and cancer risk
Telomeres are tandem repeats of TTAGGG at the end of eukaryotic chromosomes. Telomeres play a key role in chromosome stability and regulation of the cellular lifespan. Telomeres are shortened during cell division, and probably, by not yet well characterised factors in the environment. Short telomeres in peripheral blood have repeatedly been associated with increased risk of various types of cancer
Evolution of Prey Polymorphism Induced by Learning Predators
A prey species using crypsis to avoid predators has the opportunity to evolve polymorphic crypsis when it is being exposed to two (or more) habitats with different backgrounds. Here, we investigate when this phenomenon can occur, in a simulation study with a sexually reproducing prey and a predator that can learn to find hiding prey, represented by an artificial neural network. Initially, the prey
