Prioritarianism and Uncertainty : On the Interpersonal Addition Theorem and the Priority View

This paper takes its departure from the Interpersonal Addition Theorem. The theorem, by John Broome (1991), is a re-formulation of the classical result by Harsanyi (1955). It implies that, given some seemingly mild assumptions, the overall utility of an uncertain prospect can be seen as the sum of its individual utilities. In sections 1 and 2, I discuss the theorem’s connection with utilitarianism

Development and initial testing of a new instrument to measure the experience of eczema control in adults and children : Recap of atopic eczema (RECAP)

Background: Eczema control has been identified as an important outcome by key stakeholders in eczema research (including patients, carers, healthcare professionals and researchers) but no validated instruments for the domain have been identified. Objectives: To develop a measurement instrument to capture a patient's perspective of eczema control that is suitable for use in eczema clinical trials.

The interplay between host haemostatic systems and Leptospira spp. infections

Hemostasis is a defence mechanism that protects the integrity of the vascular system and is comprised of the coagulation cascade, fibrinolysis, platelet aggregation, and vascular endothelium. Besides the primary function in preserving the vascular integrity, the haemostatic system cooperates with immune and inflammatory processes to eliminate invading pathogens during microbial infections. Under p

The Swedish SPinal Cord Injury Study on Cardiopulmonary and Autonomic Impairment (SPICA) : Methodology, Cohort Demographics and Initial Results

OBJECTIVE: To present the methodology, cohort demographics and initial results of the Swedish SPinal Cord Injury Study on Cardiopulmonary and Autonomic Impairment (SPICA).DESIGN: SPICA is based on the Swedish Cardiopulmonary and Bioimage Study (SCAPIS), a study on cardiopulmonary diseases in a cohort of 30 000 people. The assessments in SPICA cover the structure and function of the cardiopulmonary

Alteration of the serine protease PRSS56 causes angle-closure glaucoma in mice and posterior microphthalmia in humans and mice

Angle-closure glaucoma (ACG) is a subset of glaucoma affecting 16 million people. Although 4 million people are bilaterally blind from ACG, the causative molecular mechanisms of ACG remain to be defined. High intraocular pressure induces glaucoma in ACG. High intraocular pressure traditionally was suggested to result from the iris blocking or closing the angle of the eye, thereby limiting aqueous

Measurement of Azimuthal Anisotropy of Muons from Charm and Bottom Hadrons in pp Collisions at s =13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

The elliptic flow of muons from the decay of charm and bottom hadrons is measured in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 150 pb-1 recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The muons from heavy-flavor decay are separated from light-hadron decay muons using momentum imbalance between the tracking and muon spectrometers. The heavy-flavor decay muons are fu

Descriptive and experimental evidence for timing-mediated polygyny risk in a pied flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca population

In polygynous species with biparental care, mates are often acquired in succession. Most research has focussed on the cost of polygyny in secondary females, but primary females may also suffer from reduced paternal care. The likelihood of sharing a male may be higher for early laying females, which could counteract the fitness benefits of breeding early. In this study, we use 12 years of data on p

Risk factors for dropped nucleus in cataract surgery as reflected by the European Registry of Quality Outcomes for Cataract and Refractive Surgery

PURPOSE: To analyze the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of cataract surgery complicated by a dropped nucleus. SETTING: Patients who have received cataract surgery in 18 European countries. DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional register-based study. METHODS: Data from the European Registry of Quality Outcomes for Cataract and Refractive Surgery (EUREQUO) were analyzed. The EUREQUO contains pr

Improving osteoarthritis care by digital means - Effects of a digital self-management program after 24- or 48-weeks of treatment

Background Osteoarthritis (OA) is highly prevalent in older adults and a growing cause of disability. Easily accessible first-line treatment of OA is increasingly important. Digital self-management programs have in recent years become available. Evidence of short-term effects of such programs are abundant, yet reports on long-term benefits and adherence to treatment are scarce. The current study’s

In vivo measurement of pre-operational spallation source workers : Baseline body burden levels and detection limits of relevant gamma emitters using high-resolution gamma spectrometry

As a measure to prepare for long-term internal dose monitoring of workers at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, operated by the European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC), as well as to enhance emergency preparedness against accidental releases, a series of in vivo measurements were conducted using a high-resolution HPGe detector with a 123% relative efficiency (1.332 Me

Male unaccompanied refugee minors’ perceptions of relationships and information about sexual health in Sweden - ‘it feels like you’ve been in prison and then set free’

Unaccompanied refugee minors represent a potentially vulnerable group regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights, particularly due to the circumstances surrounding their migration. Research is scarce about the sexual and reproductive health and rights needs of unaccompanied minors, many of whom come from countries with limited access to information about sexual and reproductive health and

Towards unconstrained compartment modeling in white matter using diffusion-relaxation MRI with tensor-valued diffusion encoding

Purpose: To optimize diffusion-relaxation MRI with tensor-valued diffusion encoding for precise estimation of compartment-specific fractions, diffusivities, and T2 values within a two-compartment model of white matter, and to explore the approach in vivo. Methods: Sampling protocols featuring different b-values (b), b-tensor shapes (bΔ), and echo times (TE) were optimized using Cramér-Rao lower bo

Exploring the role of extracellular matrix proteins to develop biomarkers of plaque vulnerability and outcome

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most common cause of death in industrialized countries. One underlying cause is atherosclerosis, which is a systemic disease characterized by plaques of retained lipids, inflammatory cells, apoptotic cells, calcium and extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins in the arterial wall. The biologic composition of an atherosclerotic plaque determines whether the plaque is

Knockout of the radical scavenger α1-microglobulin in mice results in defective bikunin synthesis, endoplasmic reticulum stress and increased body weight

α1-microglobulin (A1M) is a ubiquitous protein with reductase and radical- and heme-binding properties. The protein is mainly expressed in the liver and encoded by the α1-microglobulin-bikunin precursor (AMBP) gene together with the plasma proteinase inhibitor bikunin. The AMBP polypeptide is translated, glycosylated and the C-terminal bikunin part linked via a chondroitin sulfate glycosaminoglyca

Live GUI development for service-based systems

In an increasingly connected world where all manner of devices can communicate over the Internet, conventional methods for developing GUIs (Graphical User Interfaces) are insufficient. For systems of such devices, it must be possible to develop the system itself independently from its GUI(s). In this paper, we present an approach for developing GUIs towards already deployed, or "live", service-bas
