A Lutheran in the Holy Land: Michael Eneman´s Journey, 1711-12

The collection examines the view of the holiness in the "Holy Land" through the writings of pilgrims, travelers, and missionaries. The period extends from 1517, the Ottoman conquest of Syria and Palestine, to the Franco-British treaty of Utrecht in 1713 and the consolidation of European hegemony over the Mediterranean. The writers in the collection include Christians (Orthodox, Protestant, and Cat

Exposure to nitrogen does not eliminate N-2 fixation in the feather moss Pleurozium schreberi (Brid.) Mitt.

The feather moss Pleurozium schreberi (Brid.) Mitt. is colonized by cyanobacteria, which fix substantial amounts of atmospheric nitrogen (N) in pristine and N-poor ecosystems. Cyanobacterial N-2 fixation is inhibited by N deposition. However, the threshold of N input that leads to the inhibition of N-2 fixation has not been adequately investigated. Further, the ability of N-2 fixation to recover i

Women's patterns of everyday occupations and alcohol consumption

Earlier studies on women's health and drinking and the contemporary associated risk factors have highlighted the need for more complex approaches in understanding the pathways into women's problem drinking. Research, from both social science and from occupational therapy models, has underlined the importance of deconstructing the often dichotomized way of investigating women's daily lives (such as

Loss of CITED1, an MITF regulator, drives a phenotype switch in vitro and can predict clinical outcome in primary melanoma tumours.

CITED1 is a non-DNA binding transcriptional co-regulator whose expression can distinguish the 'proliferative' from 'invasive' signature in the phenotype-switching model of melanoma. We have found that, in addition to other 'proliferative' signature genes, CITED1 expression is repressed by TGFβ while the 'invasive' signature genes are upregulated. In agreement, CITED1 positively correlates with MIT

Short-term outcome predictors in infants born at 23-24 gestational weeks

Aim: Outcome is uncertain in infants born at 23-24 gestational weeks. The aim of the present study was to identify possible early predictors of outcome in these infants. Materials and Methods: Data from the Swedish medical birth register (MBR) for live-born infants with gestational ages (GAs) 23 and 24 weeks, born during the time-period 2000-2002, were analysed in relation to short-term outcomes,

Enzymatic synthesis of polymer acrylates and their evaluation as wood coatings

UV-curable acrylates are the base for a large and growing product group within the coatings industry. Traditional chemical catalysis is poorly suited for acrylation reactions since these require low temperatures to avoid polymerization. In this study, immobilized Candida antarctica lipase B has been used to efficiently acrylate four polymers through transesterification of ethyl acrylate, via a sol

Consequences and adaptation in daily life - patients' experiences three decades after a nerve injury sustained in adolescence

Background: To explore the patients' experiences during the three decades following repair of a nerve injury in the forearm and its consequences for daily life. Strategies that were used to facilitate adaptation were also investigated. Methods: Fifteen participants with a complete median and/or ulnar nerve injury repaired in the ages from 13-20 years were interviewed using a semi-structured interv

Perspectives on Software and their Priorities :Balancing Conflicting Stakeholder Views

The sustainable development of a software product depends on a number of groups working together to achieve a common goal. However, each of the groups interacts with the product in different ways, and can have conflicting aims and objectives. For example, developers trying to correct issues in the software architecture, which will impact future releases of the product, can be stopped by a project

High proliferation is associated with inferior Outcome in male breast cancer patients

Assessment of proliferation is important in female breast cancer and individual treatment decisions are based upon its results, especially in the lumina! subgroups. Gene expression analyses fail to group male breast cancer into the intrinsic subgroups previously established in female breast cancer. Even though proliferation has been shown to divide male breast cancer into molecular subgroups with

Trouble in School: Law, Policy and the Dynamics of Everyday Life at School

Abstract/Results. The paper discusses the results of three different studies. A study of 717 ninth grade students in eight schools located in different socio-economic environments show that students have a low degree of trust in dispute settlement forms available at school. When involved in conflicts or degrading treatment at school they avoid turning to the school for help. Students give themselv

Chemical shifts of small heterogeneous Ar/Xe clusters

Heterogeneous rare-gas clusters produced by a coexpansion of an argon/xenon mixture have been studied using synchrotron-radiation-based photoelectron spectroscopy. Both valence and Xe 4d(5/2) core-level photoelectron spectra were recorded for three different concentrations of the primary argon/xenon mixture and, for those mixtures, spectra were recorded at several different stagnation conditions.

Characterization of the arrival time jitter at the MAX-lab test-FEL using electro-optical spectral decoding

Electro-optical spectral decoding is used as an online diagnostic tool at the MAX-lab test-FEL to characterize the arrival time of electrons relative to the seed-laser pulse, measure the jitter between them and to measure the relative width of the electron bunch in order to optimize compression. Frequency characteristics of the jitter are presented. The measurements are used to get information on

Thermal diffusion of Mn through GaAs overlayers on (Ga, Mn) As

Thermally stimulated diffusion of Mn through thin layers of GaAs has been studied by x-ray photoemission. (Ga, Mn) As samples with 5 at% Mn were capped with 4, 6 and 8 monolayer (ML) GaAs, and Mn diffusing through the GaAs was trapped on the surface by means of amorphous As. It was found that the out-diffusion is completely suppressed for an 8 ML thick GaAs film. The short diffusion length is attr
