Formation of a region: Source strategies and media images of the Sweden-Danish Oresund Region

The research applies media discourse analysis and late modernity theory to the social construction of the transnational Oresund Region between the South of Sweden and East of Denmark. Based on interviews with PR sources and journalists, analysis of newspaper texts and opinion polls, the study found that despite trans-national aims the region is mainly constructed through Swedish or Danish national

The effect of defects at the steel - concrete interface, exposure regime and cement type on pitting corrosion in concrete

Abstract The effects of defects at the steel-concrete interface, the exposure regime, and the cement type, on the initiation of pitting corrosion in specially designed concrete corrosion cells were investigated. Concrete/mortar corrosion cells with cast-in mild steel electrodes representing the reinforcement were exposed for wetting-drying cycles or submerged in NaCl solution. ParalIei field expos

Structure-function analysis of HAMLET (human alpha-lactalbumin made lethal to tumor cells)

The human genome sequence encodes fewer proteins than expected, suggesting that one protein can have several functions and adjust their structure to meet different structural demands. Changes in tertiary structure have mostly been associated with disease and the most striking example is the prion protein, which changes from a mixed alpha-helical and beta-sheet conformation to the beta-sheet rich,

Insulin-like Growth Factor System: functional role and regulation in carcinomas

The insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system demonstrates numerous actions during neoplastic growth and is therefore an interesting target with potential clinical implications. While numerous studies have established important roles of the IGF system in regulating cellular growth and survival of several tumor forms, very limited reports exist regarding its role in renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The ai

Why are plants green - relationships between pigment absorption and photosynthetic efficiency

The maximum efficiency of an optically thin photosynthetic system in converting solar radiation into chemical energy is theoretically considered as a function of the absorption spectrum of the photon-collecting pigment. The absorption band position giving maximum rate of power conversion is close to 700 nm in full sunlight and at somewhat shorter wavelength in weaker light. The chemical potential

Molecular and morphological studies on non-healing venous leg ulcers.

These ulcers have various underlying causes, such as venous or arterial insufficiency, diabetes, or vasculitis. Non-healing venous leg ulcers represent a condition characterized by excessive inflammation and presence of bacteria. The overall aim of this thesis has been to explore the pathogenesis of t

Essays on Endogenous Trade Policies

This thesis consists of a collection of essays on endogenous trade policies and may briefly be summarized as follows. The first essay empirically examines determinants of bilateral trade protection originating from normative trade theory, endogenous trade-policy studies, and political arguments put forward in the public debate. Overall protection level measures are constructed and the data sample

Hepatic lipase and the clearing reaction: studies in euthyroid and hypothyroid subjects

Eight patients with primary hypothyroidism were compared to eleven euthyroid subjects with regard to the effects of a single i.v. dose of heparin on plasma lipoprotein concentrations (the "clearing reaction"). The hypothyroid patients were moderately hypercholesterolemic but had normal plasma triglyceride levels. Maximal activities of hepatic lipase (HL) and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) were lower in

Nerve cell injury in the brain of stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats

The brain lesions in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) are characterized by multifocal microvascular and spongy-cystic parenchymal alterations particularly in the gray matter. An essential feature of the lesions is the presence of edema with massive extravasation of plasma constituents as evidenced by specific gravity measurements, Evans blue technique and immunohistochemistry.

Interarrival times in a counting process and bird watching

We determine simple approximate relations between the distributions of the interarrival times and the total time of a stopped counting pro- cess, under the assumption of small intensities. These relations sug- gest applying recent results for nonparametric estimation of monotone and convex densities. The results are applied to estimating the distri- bution of the period of stay of migrating birds.

High-spin studies of the neutron deficient nuclei In-103, In-105, In-107, and In-109

High-spin states of the isotopes In-103,In-105,In-107,In-109 have been investigated using in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopic methods. Results from three different experiments are presented. Targets of Fe-54, Cr-50, and Mo-92 were bombarded by a 270 and 261 MeV Ni-58 beam and by a 95 MeV F-19 beam, respectively. Reaction channel separation was achieved with a charged-particle detector array and in the
