The 39-item Parkinson's disease questionnaire (PDQ-39) revisited: implications for evidence-based medicine.

Background: The 39 item Parkinson's disease questionnaire (PDQ-39) is the most widely used patient reported rating scale in Parkinson's disease. However, several fundamental measurement assumptions necessary for confident use and interpretation of the eight PDQ-39 scales have not been fully addressed. Methods: Postal survey PDQ-39 data from 202 people with Parkinson's disease (54% men; mean age 70

Strategies for enzyme dosing to enhance anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge

Enhancement of anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge by enzyme addition was demonstrated in batch digestion tests. A pre-hydrolysation step with addition of enzymes at controlled temperature during 4 hours was shown to increase the methane yield significantly. Further tests with direct feeding of enzymes together with fresh sludge to the digester gave the same effect of a methane yield increase. Fo

Kin competition and the evolution of dispersal in an individual-based model

The evolution of dispersal was investigated in an adaptive individual-based metapopulation model, which allowed for demographic and environmental stochasticity. The individual dispersal behaviour was determined by a one-locus genotype subjected to simple inheritance and mutation. Dispersal behaviour could therefore evolve through the genotype–phenotype mapping and the selection regimes stemming fr

Diagnostic distribution of non-traumatic upper limb disorders: vibrotactile sense in the evaluation of structured examination for optimal diagnostic criteria

Background: Upper limb disorders (ULDs) are common, and so are the difficulties in specific diagnoses of these disorders. Prior studies have shed light on the nerves in the diagnostic approach beside disorders related to muscles, tendons and joints (MCDs). Objective: The study aimed to compare the distribution of upper limb disorders, and the vibration perception threshold (VPT) in different diagn

Measurement of apolipoprotein E (apoE) in cerebrospinal fluid

Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is a protein involved in transport of lipids and has been implicated to play an important role in regeneration after nerve injury. Determination of apoE in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) thus have a potential interest when studying different forms of brain damage and as a marker of ongoing regenerative processes in the brain. However, previous studies on CSF-ApoE in Alzheimer's

Expression and biological role of laminin-1.

Of the approximately 15 laminin trimers described in mammals, laminin-1 expression seems to be largely limited to epithelial basement membranes. It appears early during epithelial morphogenesis in most tissues of the embryo, and remains present as a major epithelial laminin in some adult tissues. Previous organ culture studies with embryonic tissues have suggested that laminin-1 is important for e

Augmentation mammaplasty--psychiatric and psychosocial characteristics and outcome in a group of Swedish women

Thirty-eight women undergoing augmentation mammaplasty, consecutively operated on at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Malmo, Sweden, were studied preoperatively regarding medical history, personality, psychosocial and psychiatric characteristics. Thirty-six of these patients were interviewed one year postoperatively. Thirty-three age-matched women operated on with minor surgic

Stress in women's daily life before and after a myocardial infarction: a qualitative analysis.

Background: Little is known about women's perceptions of their daily life before and after a myocardial infarction (MI), especially with regard to stress, which is a risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD). Aim: To describe and explore women's perceptions of stress before and after an MI. Method: Two interviews with women who suffered an MI, the first at the hospital (n = 20) and the second 4

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 vectors with alphavirus envelope glycoproteins produced from stable packaging cells

Alphavirus glycoproteins have broad host ranges. Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) vectors pseudotyped with their glycoproteins could extend the range of tissues that can be transduced in both humans and animal models. Here, we established stable producer cell lines for HIV vectors pseudotyped with alphavirus Ross River virus (RRV) and Semliki Forest virus (SFV) glycoproteins E2E1. RRV E

Clinical studies of thiopurine metabolism in inflammatory bowel disease.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD, i.e. primarily Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis) is characterised by a chronic or relapsing inflammation of the digestive tract. The thiopurine drugs 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) and azathioprine (AZA, an imidazol derivative and pro-drug of 6-MP) are currently used to an increased extent in IBD, particularly in Crohn's disease. Metabolism of thiopurines is comple

Biodiversity at Linnaeus' birthplace in Stenbrohult, southern Sweden. 4. The vascular plant flora and its changes.

We review the history of floristic studies of the parish of Stenbrohult, southern Sweden, where Carl Linnaeus was born in 1707 and spent his summers until 1728. Unfortunately, Carl Linnaeus never made a list of the wild vascular plants at his birthplace, although he mentioned at least 64 species from the parish of Stenbrohult in various manuscripts and books. However, he said that Stenbrohult was

Autoantibodies to autonomic nerves associated with cardiac and peripheral autonomic neuropathy.

OBJECTIVE—This study examines whether autonomic nerve autoantibodies (ANabs) are associated with development of autonomic neuropathy using a prospective study design. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS—A group of type 1 diabetic patients were followed prospectively with regard to autonomic nerve function on four occasions. At the third examination, 41 patients were tested for ANabs (complement-fixing au

Experimental Studies of Separated Flow and Heat Transfer in a Ribbed Channel

The main concern of this thesis is to experimentally investigate the turbulent flow and heat transfer in a ribbed channel. Such flows are encountered in many engineering applications, e.g., gas turbine cooling. In order to highlight the physical mechanism of flow separation, only one wall of the channel is fitted with periodic ribs. The inter-rib spacing is set such that the reattachment is allowe

Refill non-adherence to repeat prescriptions leads to treatment gaps or to high extra costs

Objective: To determine the nature and extent of undersupply and the economic consequences of oversupply of medication among non-adherent patients. Methods: This study used copies of repeat prescriptions (=multiple dispensations), collected during 1 week in 2002 at 16 Swedish community pharmacies. For patients with a refill adherence below 80%, treatment gaps were defined as the number of days the
