Complexity and bank risk during the financial crisis

We construct a novel dataset to measure banks’ complexity and relate it to banks’ riskiness. The sample covers stock listed Euro area banks from 2007 to 2014. Bank stability is significantly affected by complexity, whereas the direction of the effect differs across complexity measures.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Ulnar Nerve Entrapment Are Associated with Impaired Psychological Health in Adults as Appraised by Their Increased Use of Psychotropic Medication

We aimed to study psychological health, as approximated by the use of psychotropic drugs, in a population diagnosed and surgically treated for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) or ulnar nerve entrapment (UNE), or both, also considering the demographic and socioeconomic factors of the individuals. Linking data from five large national registers, use of psychotropics (at least one dispensation during the

Modeling normal and malignant hematopoiesis in vitro. To screen for extrinsic regulators and differentiation therapy.

The incredible thing with blood stem cells, also known as hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), is that they can restore normal hematopoiesis in patients that need a new blood system. Since a prerequisite for successful transplantation is immune compatibility, it requires large donor registries to find a suitable match for a recipient. Unfortunately, there is still a shortage of immune-compatible donors

DNA promoter hypermethylation of melanocyte lineage genes determines melanoma phenotype

Cellular stress contributes to the capacity of melanoma cells to undergo phenotype switching into highly migratory and drug tolerant dedifferentiated states. Such dedifferentiated melanoma cell states are marked by loss of melanocyte specific gene expression and increase of mesenchymal markers. Two crucial transcription factors, MITF and SOX10, important in melanoma development and progression hav

A Socio-Legal Gender Perspective Through a Case-Study on Robotic Peripartum Depression Screening

Mental health disorders are usually gendered, with more women being diagnosed with depression for example. This elicits guidelines on how to diagnose mental health according to symptoms common to women, which in turn normalises those practices. This creates legal norms which are reflected when screening for such conditions; however, they require scrutiny, especially as they become formalised in or

Low Back Pain in People with Lower Limb Amputation : A Cross-sectional Study

STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study based on an online questionnaire.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence and intensity of low back pain (LBP) in people with lower limb amputation (LLA) and to analyse the association factors that can influence the genesis of LBP.SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: It is still unclear whether LBP is more prevalent in the amputated population than in its non-amputated

Relative Pose From a Calibrated and an Uncalibrated Smartphone Image

In this paper, we propose a new minimal and a non-minimal solver for estimating the relative camera pose together with the unknown focal length of the second camera. This configuration has a number of practical benefits, e.g., when processing large-scale datasets. Moreover, it is resistant to the typical degenerate cases of the traditional six-point algorithm. The minimal solver requires four poin

Minimal solutions for panoramic stitching given gravity prior

When capturing panoramas, people tend to align their cameras with the vertical axis, i.e., the direction of gravity. Moreover, modern devices, e.g. smartphones and tablets, are equipped with an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) that can measure the gravity vector accurately. Using this prior, the y-axes of the cameras can be aligned or assumed to be already aligned, reducing the relative orientation

New paths of understanding electricity use behaviour in energy-efficient buildings

Background and objectivesEnergy use behaviour is a complex issue and multiple perspectives are needed to fully understand it. It is difficult to define the most effective strategies or behaviours that reduce energy use in residential environment (Casado et al., 2015) despite efforts put on energy-efficient design and technologies. This study focuses on cognitive processes on electricity use behavi
