Study of safety culture at two air traffic control centres

The aim of this short paper is to present an ongoing joint research project, Human Factors in Air Navigation Services (HUFA), between the Swedish Civil Aviation Administration and Lund University. Results from the study will only be given very briefly. The project focuses on human and organizational factors and safety in air traffic control.

Rule of Succession and Political Participation in the GCC States

The chapter discusses problms of succession in the GCC states and how they are likely to impact regimes' responses to domestic and foreign demands for political reforms. It attempts to put succession issues in the context the emerging new order in the Gulf.

Development and Modernity in Hofstede's Culture's Consequences: A Postcolonial Reading

This paper studies the discourse deployed in Hofstede´s Culture's Consequences (1980, 2001), the international best-seller that introduces a model classifying national cultures according to four (later five) supposedly universal dimensions. Noting that this management-oriented scholarly discourse has had a huge impact in both the business world and academia, we take a critical stance towards the W

Model Vertices Beyond the GW Approximation

We study the effects of local vertex corrections to the self energy of the electron gas. We find that a vertex derived from time-dependent density-functional theory can give accurate self energies without including the explicit time dependence of the exchange-correlation potential provided, however, that a proper decay at large momentum transfer (large q) is built into the vertex function. (The lo

Effects of Environmental Factors on maternal Choice and Gene Dispersal in Plants

Gene dispersal through pollen is affected by both abiotic and biotic environmental factors. In this study, I mainly investigated the effect of environmental factors: nutrient availability, simulated herbivory and floral morphology (flower colour), on the siring success of competing pollen donors and fitness of the resulting offspring. In a greenhouse experiments, maternal plants were treated with

From Intuition to Insight

The article discusses the role of intuition for insight. Creativity provides heuristic solutions to problems that are intractable if approached in standard, algorithmic ways. Intuition is claimed to occur during the incubation phase (Wallas 1926) and to crucially depend on embodied memory and unconscious processing of memories, such as reconstruction and recreation. Two suggestions as to how memor

Design paradigmes and misunderstood technology: The case of older users

The stereotypes about older adults and the incomplete picture that emerges when such persons are described in terms of properties and a characteristic derived from ageing is one motivation for defining the status of older users. The other key motivation is that the elderly are just one user-group among others so that the perspective on how technology is used may or may not tell us something about
