Quantitation of immunoglobulin G by electrophoresis in agarose gel containing antibodies

It is shown that the method of protein quantitation by electrophoresis in antibody-containing agarose introduced by Laurell in 1966 can, if slightly modified, be used for quantitation of polyclonal human IgG. This modified method, permits simultaneous quantitation of IgA. It is accomplished within about 9 hours and allows comparison between the charge composition of different IgG-populations. The

Immunofluorescent demonstration of the presence of protein HC on the surface of human lymphocytes

Indirect immunofluorescence was used to demonstrate the presence of protein HC on the surface of a large percentage of normal human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Protein HC is a recently described charge heterogeneous, complex-forming glycoprotein normally present in human plasma, urine and cerebrospinal fluid. The synthesis of protein HC by lymphocytes was indicated by the removal of the glycopro

Roadmap on semiconductor-cell biointerfaces

This roadmap outlines the role semiconductor-based materials play in understanding the complex biophysical dynamics at multiple length scales, as well as the design and implementation of next-generation electronic, optoelectronic, and mechanical devices for biointerfaces. The roadmap emphasizes the advantages of semiconductor building blocks in interfacing, monitoring, and manipulating the activit

Serum osteocalcin levels at 4 months of age were associated with neurodevelopment at 4 years of age in term-born children

Aim: The hormone osteocalcin influenced neurodevelopment and cognition in mice models; this human study explored potential associations between total serum levels in human infants and neurodevelopment at 4 years of age. Methods: The data were based on two Swedish birth cohorts from 2008 to 2009. We followed 158 healthy full-term vaginal births (51% girls) by measuring serum osteocalcin in cord blo

Evaluation of an Alternative Learning System for youths at risk of involvement in urban violence in the Philippines

BACKGROUND: Globally, violence disproportionately affects young people, leading to injury, hospitalisation, death, social dysfunction, and poor mental wellbeing. Moreover, it has far-reaching economic consequences for whole nations, due to loss of productivity. Research suggests that attaining a higher level of education promotes factors that insulate youths from poverty and violence.PURPOSE: In t

Altering the water holding capacity of potato pulp via structural modifications of the pectic polysaccharides

Potato pulp is a low value agricultural side stream with great valorisation potential as prebiotic food ingredient. An interesting functionality different from other prebiotics is its high water holding capacity (WHC). This study aims at exploring the relationship between physical and enzymatic modifications in the potato pulp and its WHC. Different temperature treatments and storage conditions we

Temporary contracts and the dynamics of job turnover

We report results indicating that job turnover is not countercyclical in general but rather reflects the inability of smooth labor adjustment through the use of temporary employment contracts. Service establishments with a high share of temporary employment exhibit acyclical job reallocation, while only permanent jobs within manufacturing are found to be countercyclical.
