Metabolism of [N-15]alanine in the ectomycorrhizal fungus Paxillus involutus

Alanine metabolism in the ectomycorrhizal fungus Paxillus involutus was investigated using [N-15]alanine. Short-term exposure of mycelial discs to [N-15]alanine showed that the greatest flow of N-15 was to glutamate and to aspartate. Levels of enrichment were as high as 15-20% for glutamate and 13-18% for aspartate, whereas that of alanine reached 30%. Label was also detected in the amino-N of glu

Effects of contraction duration on low-frequency fatigue in voluntary and electrically induced exercise of quadriceps muscle in humans

The aims of this study were to investigate if low-frequency fatigue (LFF) dependent on the duration of repeated muscle contractions and to compare LFF in voluntary and electrically induced exercise. Male subjects performed three 9-min periods of repeated isometric knee extensions at 40% maximal voluntary contraction with contraction plus relaxation periods of 30 plus 60 s, 15 plus 30 s and 5 plus

Down-regulation of apolipoprotein M expression is mediated by phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase in HepG2 cells.

Apolipoprotein M (apoM) is a novel apolipoprotein present mostly in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in human plasma. In the present study, we demonstrate that insulin, insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), and IGF-I potential peptide (IGF-IPP) significantly inhibits apoM expression, in a dose- and a time-dependent manner, in the human hepatoma cell line, HepG2 cells. Insulin-induced down-regulation

Predictive formulas for breaker depth index and breaker type

This study was undertaken to establish the most reliable breaker depth index formula that will yield satisfactory predictions for a wide range of hydraulic and beach conditions. The applicability of six existing formulas for computing the breaker depth index was examined with the use of a large amount of published laboratory data (524 cases collected from 22 sources). The behavior of these formula

Application of fuzzy partial least squares (FPLS) modeling nonlinear biological processes

We applied a nonlinear fuzzy partial least squares (FPLS) algorithm for modeling a biological wastewater treatment plant. FPLS embeds the Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) fuzzy model into the regression framework of the partial least squares (PLS) method, in which FPLS utilizes a TSK fuzzy model for nonlinear characteristics of the PLS inner regression. Using this approach, the interpretability of the TSK

Quantum information processing and communication - Strategic report on current status, visions and goals for research in Europe

We present an excerpt of the document "Quantum Information Processing and Communication: Strategic report on current status, visions and goals for research in Europe", which has been recently published in electronic form at the website of FET (the Future and Emerging Technologies Unit of the Directorate General Information Society of the European Commission, http://www.cordis.lu/ist/fet/qipc-sr.ht

Increased renal arterial resistance predicts the course of renal function in type 2 diabetes with microalbuminuria

Type 2 diabetic patients often die because of end-stage renal failure, but no definitive reliable factor predicting long-term renal outcome has been identified. We tested whether a renal arterial resistance index (R/I) >= 80, using Doppler ultrasound technique, was predictive of worsening renal function. The primary end points of the study were 1) the course of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and

Electrocochleographic and audiometric evaluation of hypobaric effect in Meniere's disease

OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the effects of hypobaric pressure on cochlear hydrodynamics in patents with well-defined Meniere's disease. DESIGN: Sixteen patients were consecutively selected. Elevated hearing threshold levels and pathological transtympanal electrocochleography (tt-ECOG) were confirmed at the day of trial. The patients were exposed to repeated episodes of hypobaric pressure in a pressur

LIVING WITH PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE Quality of life and the patients' view of meaning

Emellertid är kunskapen om varaktigheten The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate quality of life and the meaning of living with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) before and after revascularization in a long-term and methodological perspective. The sample in the first study consisted of 142 patients with PAD who were planned for a revascularization. Quality of life (QoL) assessment with the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) was ma

Electronic structure of [100]-oriented free-standing semiconductor nanowires

We report on a theoretical study of the electronic structure of [100]-oriented free-standing III-V semiconductor nanowires with quadratic (square wire) and rectangular (nanobelt) cross-sections based on an atomistic tight-binding approach. It is shown that at the same cross-section aspect ratio, the characteristics of the band structure and state wave functions of the nanowires in the vicinity of

Chromatography of microbial cells using continuous supermacroporous affinity and ion-exchange columns

Continuous supermacroporous chromatographic columns with anion-exchange ligands [2-(dimethylanlino)ethyl group] and immobilized metal affinity (IMA) ligands (Cu2+-loaded iminodiacetic acid) have been developed allowing binding of Escherichia coli cells and the elution of bound cells with high recoveries. These poly(acrylamide)-based continuous supermacroporous columns have been produced by radical

Bridging the communicative gap between a person with dementia and caregivers. A nursing perspective

Forskning tyder på att vissa reaktioner, bland annat aggressiva handThe aim was to explore possible areas and sources that could inform the care for people with dementia. These were the people with dementia themselves, nurses reflective discussions about caring, nurse-patient interaction together with information from close family members, and the previous personality and sense of coherence of people with dementia in relation to behaviour during the disease as rel

Making Manufacturing Flexibility Operational Part 1 - A Framework

Develops a framework for manufacturing flexibility which illustrates how to obtain consistency from manufacturing strategy to the resource characteristics in the production system. Provides guidance on how to analyse and develop manufacturing flexibility in a corporate decision-making context. Uses the well-known input-transformation-output (ITO) model as a starting point for building the frame-wo
