Hetero Face-to-Face Porphyrin Array with Cooperative Effects of Coordination and Host–Guest Complexation

We successfully synthesized a hetero face-to-face porphyrin array composed of ZnTPP and RuTPP(DABCO)2 (TPP: 5, 10, 15, 20-tetraphenylporphyrin, DABCO: 1,4-diazabi-cyclo[2.2.2]octane) in 2:1 molar ratio. A cyclic Zn porphyrin dimer (ZnCP) was also used as the host molecule for the Ru porphyrin. In the latter, the Ru-DABCO bonding in RuTPP(DABCO)2 was stabilized by the host-guest complexation. React

Exploring the Applications of Machine Learning in the Public Sector

Despite the many use cases for machine learning, it sees minimal usage in Sweden’s public sector today. It is important that the public sector in particular utilizes the most efficient tools available. For this reason, the Department of Employment and Social Services in Malmö has started a project to explore the viability of introducing machine learning to their work. This thesis corresponds to ro

The 'lost generation' in adult psychiatry : psychiatric, neurodevelopmental and sociodemographic characteristics of psychiatric patients with autism unrecognised in childhood

Background Patients with 'underlying' autism spectrum disorder (ASD) constitute a significant minority in adult out-patient psychiatry. Diagnoses of previously unrecognised ASD are increasing in adults. Characteristics of patients with autism within adult out-patient psychiatry have not been sufficiently explored, and there have not been any systematic comparisons of characteristics between patien

Jane Austen’s Exploration of Romanticism: Teaching “older” Literature Through Northanger Abbey in the Swedish Upper-Secondary English Classroom

This paper argues that Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey is a valuable pedagogical resource that can address the Swedish National Agency for Education’s mandate on the coverage of “older” literature in Swedish EFL courses at upper secondary school in a flexible and thorough way. Presupposing that the novel comprises various literary genres and forms, the paper provides a close reading through a propo

Audiovisual Input in the Swedish EFL Classroom

The aim of this essay is to gain insight into how audiovisual input is used in the classroom as a tool to teach vocabulary. This is done by exploring the use of digital audiovisual input in the form of film, documentaries, short videos, and cultural video content in the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom. Audiovisual input contains a few key elements: audio, video, and on-screen text; t

Teacher views on translanguaging practices and teaching methods for vocabulary teaching – A qualitative study of four Swedish upper secondary school teachers of English

This essay explores four English teachers’ views on their methods of teaching vocabulary, as well as the incorporation of translanguaging in their teaching of English vocabulary. The study investigates what the teachers’ preferred methods of teaching vocabulary are and whether they rely more on implicit or explicit vocabulary teaching. Furthermore, the study explores if the participating teachers

The Class of Us: A Study Across Several Schools in Sweden Comparing the EFL Comprehension of Playing the Video Game The Last of Us Versus Viewing the Television Adaptation

Contemporary English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms in upper secondary schools in Sweden make frequent use of receptive media such as movies and television to facilitate language learning. The more interactive medium of video games is seldom used for the same purpose, despite previous research indicating that the added layer of interactivity can bring benefits such as improvements to vocab

Functional In Vivo Screening Identifies microRNAs Regulating Metastatic Dissemination of Prostate Cancer Cells to Bone Marrow

Distant metastasis is the major cause of cancer-related deaths in men with prostate cancer (PCa). An in vivo functional screen was used to identify microRNAs (miRNAs) regulating metastatic dissemination of PCa cells. PC3 cells transduced with pooled miRZiP™ lentivirus library (anti-miRNAs) were injected intraprostatic to 13 NSG mice followed by targeted barcode/anti-miR sequencing. PCa cells in th

Galendansaren.

Previous negative experiences of healthcare reported by Swedish pregnant women with fear of birth - A mixed method study

Background: Negative encounters in healthcare might affect women's health. During their reproductive life span, women are exposed to various health examinations, and have reported disrespectful care and obstetric violence. Such experiences might be a basis for fear of birth. Aim: to explore and describe the prevalence, associated factors and experiences of previous negative healthcare encounters i

Study protocol of the InterVitaminK trial : A Danish population-based randomised double-blinded placebo-controlled trial of the effects of vitamin K (menaquinone-7) supplementation on cardiovascular, metabolic and bone health

Introduction Vitamin K has been suggested to have protective effects against progression of vascular calcification and development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, few well-powered randomised controlled trials have examined whether vitamin K prevents progression of vascular calcification in individuals from the general population. The aim of the InterVitaminK trial is to investigate the e

Birthweight is associated with clinical characteristics in people with recently diagnosed type 2 diabetes

Aims/hypothesis: Low birthweight is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes but it is unknown whether low birthweight is associated with distinct clinical characteristics at disease onset. We examined whether a lower or higher birthweight in type 2 diabetes is associated with clinically relevant characteristics at disease onset. Methods: Midwife records were traced for 6866 individuals with type 2 diabe

The age-dependent association of Life's Simple 7 with transitions across cognitive states after age 60

Background: Life's Simple 7 (LS7) aims to promote ideal cardiovascular health (CVH). Its association with different cognitive states in the older old is unclear. Objectives: To assess the associations of LS7 with transitions across normal cognition, cognitive impairment, no dementia (CIND), and dementia and evaluate cognitive impairment-free years of life by LS7-defined CVH levels in older adults.

Left atrial dyssynchrony in veteran endurance athletes with and without paroxysmal atrial fibrillation

Background: Prolonged endurance exercise increase the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) in men. Functional parameters may help separate physiological from pathological atrial remodeling in athletes. LA mechanical dispersion (LA MD) is associated with AF in the general population, but the associations between prolonged exercise, LA MD and AF are not known. Purpose: To describe LA MD in veteran athle

A Numerical Methodology for the Design of Active Prechambers in Spark-Ignition Engines

Active prechamber spark-ignition engines are a feasible and effective solution in reducing fuel consumption and pollutant emissions for internal combustion engines. However, reliable and low-cost numerical approaches need to be developed to support and speed-up their industrial design, considering their geometric complexity and the involved multiple-flow length scales. In this work, a computationa

The dynamics of touch-responsive gene expression in cereals

Wind, rain, herbivores, obstacles, neighbouring plants, etc. provide important mechanical cues to steer plant growth and survival. Mechanostimulation to stimulate yield and stress resistance of crops is of significant research interest, yet a molecular understanding of transcriptional responses to touch is largely absent in cereals. To address this, we performed whole-genome transcriptomics follow

Deep Learning Based Out-of-focus Detection on Surveillance Footage

Loss of focus in surveillance cameras can occur due to factors such as environmental aspects, sabotage or system errors. The focus loss leads to degraded footage that is of no use for either post-investigation or automatic video analysis. It is therefore of the utmost importance to provide an automatic detection system in order to resolve the issue as fast as possible. The most popular approach

Particle Detection in Bone Marrow Using CNNs and Transformer Networks

The critical role of hematological stem cells, concentrated in bone marrow, in disease diagnosis makes the detection of these cells an imperative task. The current process, however, is slow and heavily reliant on expert interpretation, underscoring the need for automation. In this thesis, we collected a 20x microscopy dataset of real and fake bone marrow particles and fine-tuned several CNNs and T
