Emergency intervention for thrombosed popliteal artery aneurysm: can the limb be salvaged?

We present a review and our own experience of the demographic aspects of popliteal artery aneurysms (PAAs), their clinical presentation, the treatment alternatives and associated outcome. The incidence of PAAs varies between 0,1-1%. 95% of the patients are male. 50% are asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis. Annually, 5-24% of PAAs develop symptoms. The clinical presentation varies widely with an

Imbalance and fractures in the elderly Effects of decreased vibration sensation and vestibular asymmetry

Denna neuromuskulära aktivitet bygger på sensorisk information från Control of the upright stance and locomotion is a complicated process of muscular activity. The muscular activity is dependant on afferent information from the different sensory organs and interpretation in the central nervous system. Age-related degenerative changes exist in all the domains concerned with control of posture. The aims of the studies were to investigate if suspected age-related de

Improving radioimmonotargeting of tumors. Variation in the amount of L6 MAb administered, combined with an immunoadsorption system (ECIA)

Extracorporeal immunoadsorption (ECIA) is a new method for the selective removal of circulating radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies (MAb) from plasma to increase the uptake in tumor versus normal tissues (T/N-ratio). To ascertain whether the amount of MAb affects T/N ratios immediately and 24 h after ECIA, we used a rat model with two tumor sites--one intramuscular (im) and one below the subrenal c

On Weapons Plutonium in the Arctic Environment (Thule, Greenland)

This thesis concerns a nuclear accident that occurred in the Thule (Pituffik) area, NW Greenland in 1968, called the Thule accident. Results are based on different analytical techniques, i.e. gamma spectrometry, alpha spectrometry, ICP-MS, SEM with EDX and different sediment models, i.e. (CRS, CIC). The scope of the thesis is the study of hot particles. Studies on these have shown several interest

Coherent Interactions in Rare-Earth-Ion-Doped Crystals for Applications in Quantum Information Science

I avhandlingen diskuteras olika aspekter av hur de sällsynta jordartsatomer sThis thesis describes investigations of the use of cryogenically cooled rare-earth-ion-doped crystals for quantum information processing and quantum optics. Several aspects of the coherent interaction between light and rare-earth ions in solids are addressed. Quantum information science has given physicists new views of quantum mechanics. The transmission of quantum states has already found pract

Intra-Generational Trust - a Semi-Experimental Study of Trust Among Different Generations

From a public database in Sweden we obtained a subject pool consisting of one group of 20 years old and another group exactly 50 years older. The groups participated in a mail-based trust game, in which the young cohort exhibited more trust than the older one. Subjects significantly preferred to place trust in co-players of their own cohort and of the female sex. When amounts sent and proportions

Final height after combined growth hormone and GnRH analogue treatment in adopted girls with early puberty

Background: Girls adopted from developing countries often have early or precocious puberty, requiring treatment with gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogues. During such treatment, decreased growth velocity is frequent. Aim: To study whether the addition of growth hormone (GH) to GnRH analogue treatment improves final height in girls with early or precocious puberty. Methods: Forty-six gi

Sorting of Von Willebrand factor to lysosome-related granules of haematopoietic cells

The aim of this work was to investigate sorting mechanisms of von Willebrand factor (VWF) when expressed in haematopoietic cells. The processing and sorting of both the wild-type VWF and a multimerization defective propeptide-mutant (VWFm) were investigated after expression in the 32D cell line. Normal proteolytic processing was observed for both proteins, however the processing of VWFm was much s

Apoptosis and tumor cell death pathways in response to HAMLET

Ett problem HAMLET (Human alpha-lactalbumin made lethal to tumor cells) is a molecular complex of alpha-lactalbumin and oleic acid, that induces programmed cells death in tumor cells but leaves healthy differentiated cells unaffected. It has a broad anti-tumor activity as more than 40 cell lines from different origin are sensitive. The cell death activity of HAMLET is retained in vivo. HAMLET limits the progr

Brain metastases--comparison of gadodiamide injection-enhanced MR imaging at standard and high dose, contrast-enhanced CT and non-contrast-enhanced MR imaging

The aim was to compare the abilities of contrast-enhanced CT, non-contrast-enhanced MR imaging and contrast-enhanced MR imaging using standard (0.1 mmol/kg b.w.) and high (0.3 mmol/kg b.w.) doses of Gadodiamide injection to detect brain metastases (i.e. blood-brain barrier damage). Sixteen patients with at least 2 metastases found by CT were evaluated by MR imaging using non-contrast-enhanced spin

Influence of the Coulomb parameter U on partial densities of states of CuGeO3: Comparison with X-ray spectral data

The electronic structure of the strongly Coulomb correlated cuprate CuGeO3 has been calculated by the local-density-approximation method (LDA+U). The parameter U was varied from 0 to 8 eV. The results of the band-structure calculations are compared with experimental data obtained by means of X-ray photoelectron and resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy methods (Cu Lalpha and O Kalpha X-ray emission

Force development in muscle strips of the disused and nondistended rat urinary bladder

In rats the flow of urine was diverted from the bladder over a period of 7-10 days. Active length-tension curves of muscle strips of such disused bladders did not differ from those of controls, provided lengths were related to optimum length for force development. When, however, lengths were related to length in situ the active length-tension curves were shifted to the left. The muscle strips of t
