A study of European womens' experience of the problems of urogenital ageing and its management
OBJECTIVES: A six country Pan-European study of aspects of urogenital ageing (UGA). METHODS: The study was carried out using a stratified random sample of 3000 women between the ages of 55 and 75 years. RESULTS: A total of 30% suffered from UGA symptoms, of whom 60% made efforts to alleviate their UGA problems, most commonly using HRT. There were some international differences regarding womens' pe
Late Ordovician palaeoceanographic changes as reflected in the Hirnantian-early Llandovery succession of Jamtland, Sweden
A study of the Upper Ordovician-Lower Silurian strata in Jamtland, central Sweden, shows that large-scale changes in shelf deposition took place close to the systems boundary. These changes include unconformity development and the replacement of a siliciclastic shelf with a carbonate-dominated shelf, suggesting the interaction of allocyclic controls such as changing eustatic sea-level and climate.
Influence on thermal response test by groundwater flow in vertical fractures in hard rock
In this paper different approaches to groundwater flow and its effect in the vicinity of a borehole ground heat exchanger are discussed. The common assumption that groundwater flow in hard rock may be modelled as a homogeneous flow in a medium with an effective porosity is confronted and models for heat transfer due to groundwater flow in fractures and fracture zones are presented especially from
Age-related changes in the proteoglycans of human skin - Specific cleavage of decorin to yield a major catabolic fragment in adult skin
Dramatic changes occur in skin as a function of age, including changes in morphology, physiology, and mechanical properties. Changes in extracellular matrix molecules also occur, and these changes likely contribute to the overall age-related changes in the physical properties of skin. The major proteoglycans detected in extracts of human skin are decorin and versican. In addition, adult human skin
Enzymatic properties of the low molecular mass endoglucanases Cel12A (EG III) and Cel45A (EG V) of Trichoderma reesei
Trichoderma reesei produces five known endoglucanases. The most studied are Cel7B (EG I) and Cel5A (EG II) which are the most abundant of the endoglucanases. We have performed a characterisation of the enzymatic properties of the less well-studied endoglucanases Cel12A (EG III), Cel45A (EG V) and the catalytic core of Cel45A. For comparison, Cel5A and Cel7B were included in the study. Adsorption s

On uniqueness and continuity for the quasi-linear, bianisotropic Maxwell equations, using an entropy condition
The quasi-linear Maxwell equations describing electromagnetic wave propagation in nonlinear media permit several weak solutions, which may be discontinuous (shock waves). It is often conjectured that the solutions are unique if they satisfy an additional entropy condition. The entropy condition states that the energy contained in the electromagnetic fields is irreversibly dissipated to other energ
A new automated method for analysis of gated-SPECT images based on a three-dimensional heart shaped model
A new automated method for quantification of left ventricular function from gated-single photon emission computed tomography ( SPECT) images has been developed. The method for quantification of cardiac function (CAFU) is based on a heart shaped model and the active shape algorithm. The model contains statistical information of the variability of left ventricular shape. CAFU was adjusted based on t
Decrease in REM latency and changes in sleep quality parallel serotonergic damage and recovery after MDMA: a longitudinal study over 180 days
The recreational drug ecstasy [3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)], has been found to selectively damage brain serotonin neurons in experimental animals, and probably in human MDMA users, but detailed morphometric analyses and parallel functional measures during damage and recovery are missing. Since there is evidence that serotonin regulates sleep, we have compared serotonergic markers para
Peptidoglycan from Staphylococcus aureus induces tissue factor expression and procoagulant activity in human monocytes.
Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most significant pathogens in human sepsis and endocarditis. S. aureus can initiate blood coagulation, leading to the formation of microthrombi and multiorgan dysfunction in sepsis, whereas in endocarditis the bacterium induces fibrin clots on the inner surface of the heart, so-called endocardial vegetations. In the present study, we show that live and heat-kill
Mitochondrial respiratory capacity gradually increases during the first week in patients with severe sepsis or septic shock-a temporal analysis of mitochondrial function in platelets using high-resolution respirometry
The Al-Sb-V-oxide system for propane ammoxidation: A study of regions of phase formation and catalytic role of Al, Sb, and V
Syntheses in the Al-Sb-V-O system, which is a candidate catalyst system for propane ammoxidation to acrylonitrile, were characterised by X-ray powder diffraction, electron diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis, high-resolution electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and catalytic measurements. The objective was to study phase formation as well as to identify the phase, or phases,
Inhibition of the L-dopa transport system in human epidermal Langerhans cells by omeprazole and its analogues.
Role of the extracellular matrix and its receptors in smooth muscle cell function: implications in vascular development and disease
By regulating migration, proliferation and apoptosis as well as extracellular matrix synthesis and assembly, proteoglycans, integrins and the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex may be of great importance both during development and in vascular disease.
Willingness to pay for on-demand and prophylactic treatment for severe haemophilia in Sweden.
The objective of the present paper was to provide an estimate of the benefits of on-demand and prophylaxis treatment strategies for severe haemophilia in monetary terms. Using the contingent-valuation method, which simulates a missing market by asking people about their willingness to pay (WTP), we asked a representative sample (n = 609) of the Swedish population if they would be willing to pay a
Abundances in metal-rich stars. Detailed abundance analysis of 47 G and K dwarf stars with [Me/H] > 0.10 dex
We have derived elemental abundances of O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni as well as for a number of s-elements for 47 G and K dwarf, with [Me/H]>0.1 dex. The selection of stars was based on their kinematics as well as on their uvby-beta photometry. One sample of stars on rather eccentric orbits traces the chemical evolution interior to the solar orbit and another, on circular orbits,
Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the French version of the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) in knee osteoarthritis patients
OBJECTIVE: To adapt the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) into French and to evaluate the psychometric properties of this new version. METHODS: The French version of the KOOS was developed according to cross-cultural guidelines by using the "translation-back translation" method to ensure content validity. KOOS data were then obtained in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthrit
Biphenotypic bigenotypic lymphoma with simultaneous expression of PAX5/BSAP and B- and T-cell markers
Lymphomas are currently categorized according to their origin from a B or T lymphocyte. Immature and less commonly mature (peripheral) lymphomas may harbor rearrangements of both the B- and T-cell antigen receptor genes (dual genotype or bigenotype). Rarely, cells in lymphoma with a single genotype simultaneously express both B- and T-cell markers (biphenotypic lymphomas). We discuss the diagnosti
