Substitutions of surface amino acid residues of cutinase probed by aqueous two-phase partitioning

The surface properties of a protein are often crucial for recognition and interaction with other molecules. Important functional residues can be identified by mutational analysis. There is a need for rapid methods to study protein surfaces and surface changes due to mutations. Partitioning in aqueous two-phase systems has the potential to be used in this respect since protein partitioning depends

Dynamic Analysis of Harmonics in Electrical Systems

Frequency domain analysis and design of power systems is complicated in the presence of harmonics, switching dynamics, nonlinearities, unbalances, and for systems with mixed ac/dc dynamics. The reason is that linearization of the system does not lead to a time invariant system, but a system with periodically time varying dynamics, which implies that there is coupling between different frequencies.

Complete Nevanlinna-Pick property of Dirichlet-type spaces

We prove that all Dirichlet-type spaces of functions analytic in the unit disk whose derivatives are square area integrable with superharmonic weights have complete Nevanlinna-Pick reproducing kernels. As a corollary, we obtain a commutant lifting theorem for cyclic analytic two-isometries. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science (USA).

Essays on Lookback and Barrier Options - A Malliavin Calculus Approach

This thesis consists of four theoretical essays on contingent claim analysis and its connection to Malliavin calculus. The first three papers are analyzed in the famous Black and Scholes model, while the setup of the fourth paper involves an international environment and the presence of exchange rates. In the first essay the tractability of the Malliavin calculus approach to derive the replicatin

The effect of operational temperature on dewatering characteristics of digested sludge

Dewatering properties and sludge structure of anaerobically digested sludge were studied in relation to an increasing operational temperature. Sludge samples were taken from 5 pilot-scale CSTR reactors treating municipal sewage sludge with working volume of 20 L and operating at 33, 35, 37, 39 and 55 degrees C, respectively. The main parameters of interest were capillary suction time (CST), concen

Factors involved in the relaxation of female pig urethra evoked by electrical field stimulation

1 Non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic (NANC) relaxations induced by electrical field stimulation (EFS)were studied in pig isolated urethra. The mechanism for relaxation was characterized by measurement of cyclic nucleotides and by study of involvement of different subsets of voltage-operated calcium channels (VOCCs). 2 EFS evoked frequency-dependent and tetrodotoxin-sensitive relaxations in the prese

Radiative lifetime measurements in ErII by time-resolved laser spectroscopy

Radiative lifetimes of 30 excited states of Er 11, ranging in energy from 25 592 to 36 148 cm(-1), have been measured by means of a time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) technique. Free, singly ionized erbium ions were produced in a laser-induced plasma. A tunable laser, with 1 ns duration pulse, was employed to selectively excite the Er+ ions. The lifetime values were evaluated from the

Velocity imaging for the liquid-gas interface in the near field of an atomizing spray: proof of concept

We describe adaptation of ballistic imaging for the liquid core of an atomizing spray. To describe unambiguously the forces that act to break apart the liquid core in a spray, one must directly measure the force vectors themselves. It would be invaluable, therefore, to obtain velocity and acceleration data at the liquid-gas interface. We employ double-image ballistic imaging to extract velocity in

Auger electron-ion coincidence studies to probe molecular dynamics

Electron analysis combined with ion mass spectrometry is shown to be a unique tool to understand fragmentation dynamics of core-excited molecules. This article describes in detail a new setup devoted to energy and angle correlations measurements between the emitted particles resulting from inner-shell ionization or excitation. The data collection system is based on a pair of position sensitive det

Effect of high-dose vitamin A supplementation on the immune response to Bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccines

Background: Vitamin A supplementation (VAS) at birth has been associated with decreased mortality in Asia. Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine is given at birth in tuberculosis-endemic countries. Previous studies suggest that VAS may influence the immune response to vaccines. Objective: Our objective was to examine whether VAS influences the immune response to simultaneously administered BCG vac

Quantitative studies of liver atrophy after portacaval shunt in the rat

Background. It is well known that portacaval shunting ultimately leads to a decrease in liver volume and hepatic function, but the mechanism is uncertain. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of portacaval shunting (PCS) upon the morphological changes that occur in the liver in rats after port caval. anastomosis. Materials and methods. Sixty-six male rats underwent either PCS (n

Quality of care in geriatric rehabilitation: Clients’ perceptions, ADL dependence, and subjective well-being in a one-year perspective.

World-wide, the development of community-based geriatric rehabilitation has received increased attention. In Sweden, national reforms during the 1990s aimed at improved quality of geriatric rehabilitation. This paper focuses clients' perceptions of the rehabilitation process, dependence in activities of daily living (ADL), and subjective well-being in a one-year perspective. A study-specific quest
