The ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) proportional drift tube: design and performance
A straw proportional counter is the basic element of the ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT). Its detailed properties as well as the main properties of a few TRT operating gas mixtures are described. Particular attention is paid to straw tube performance in high radiation conditions and to its operational stability.

Control of GaP and GaAs Nanowire Morphology through Particle and Substrate Chemical Modification.
We demonstrate two very different morphologies for GaP and GaAs nanowires grown by Au-assisted MOVPE on Si(111) substrates: rodlike wires and tapered wires with sharp tips. We show that the morphology is related to the stability of the particles at the wire tips during growth, and we propose that the mechanism of this effect is diffusion of Au away from the tip. Diffusion occurs, leading to tapere
Quest for the lost siblings of the Sun
Aims. The aim of this paper is to find lost siblings of the Sun by analyzing high resolution spectra. Finding solar siblings will enable us to constrain the parameters of the parental cluster and the birth place of the Sun in the Galaxy. Methods. The solar siblings can be identified by accurate measurements of metallicity, stellar age and elemental abundances for solar neighbourhood stars. The sol
How can we be moral when we are so irrational?
Normative ethics usually presupposes background accounts of human agency, and although different ethical theorists might have different pictures of human agency in mind, there is still something like a standard account that most of mainstream normative ethics can be understood to rest on. Ethical theorists tend to have Rational Man, or at least some close relative to him, in mind when constructing
Subjective health complaints in adolescent victims of cyber harassment: moderation through support from parents/friends - a Swedish population-based study.
Victimization in cyberspace has emerged as a new public health issue among the young. The main purpose of this study was to analyze associations between cyber victimization defined as cyber harassment (CH) (a somewhat broader concept than cyberbullying) and subjective health complaints (SHC), to study whether these associations were modified by parental/friend support (measured as communication),

Neurogenesis from Neural Stem Cells, Ependymal Cells and Fibroblasts
DenStroke is a major cause of death and disability around the world. Stroke leads to loss of neurons and also other cells in the brain due to lack of blood supply. Currently no therapies are available to treat stroke-related disability. It has been shown that stroke leads to increased neurogenesis, birth of new neurons, within the brain. This increased neurogenesis is not sufficient to restore lost f
Influence of Familial Renal Glycosuria Due to Mutations in the SLC5A2 Gene on Changes in Glucose Tolerance over Time.
Familial renal glycosuria is an inherited disorder resulting in glucose excretion in the urine despite normal blood glucose concentrations. It is most commonly due to mutations in the SLC5A2 gene coding for the glucose transporter SGLT2 in the proximal tubule. Several drugs have been introduced as means to lower glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes targeting SGLT2 resulting in renal glycosuria
A Randomized, Doubleblind, Placebo-Controlled, Study of Single-Dose Rituximab as Induction in Renal Transplantation
We performed a prospective, double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled multicenter study on the efficacy and safety of rituximab as induction therapy, together with tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, and steroids. The primary endpoint was defined as acute rejection, graft loss, or death during the first 6 months. Secondary endpoints were creatinine clearance, incidence of infections, and inciden
The Origin, Development and Molecular Diversity of Rodent Olfactory Bulb Glutamatergic Neurons Distinguished by Expression of Transcription Factor NeuroD1.
Production of olfactory bulb neurons occurs continuously in the rodent brain. Little is known, however, about cellular diversity in the glutamatergic neuron subpopulation. In the central nervous system, the basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor NeuroD1 (ND1) is commonly associated with glutamatergic neuron development. In this study, we utilized ND1 to identify the different subpopulations o

The Cyanobacterial Role in the Resistance of Feather Mosses to Decomposition-Toward a New Hypothesis
Cyanobacteria-plant symbioses play an important role in many ecosystems due to the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen (N) by the cyanobacterial symbiont. The ubiquitous feather moss Pleurozium schreberi (Brid.) Mitt. is colonized by cyanobacteria in boreal systems with low N deposition. Here, cyanobacteria fix substantial amounts of N-2 and represent a potential N source. The feather moss appears to
Assessment of Global and Regional Diffusion Changes along White Matter Tracts in Parkinsonian Disorders by MR Tractography.
The aim of the study was to determine the usefulness of diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) in parkinsonian disorders using a recently developed method for normalization of diffusion data and tract size along white matter tracts. Furthermore, the use of DTT in selected white matter tracts for differential diagnosis was assessed.
Etik och jämlikhet. En diskussion om den pedagogiska relationens villkor utifrån Emmanuel Levinas filosofi
This article discusses ethics and equality using the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas within the field of educational relations. Levinas usually focuses on ethics, but in this article I also discuss his parallel political dimension which makes equality possible. Levinas’ argument of infinite asymmetrical positions is used in an expanded sense to also include infinite individuals. This leads to a vie
Apolipoprotein M: structure and function
Lipoproteins in blood play an important physiological role transporting cholesterol, lipids and lipid-soluble substances to the different organs of the body. Diseases such as atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease and stroke are associated with defects in lipoprotein metabolism. For many years, intense research has focused on the role of cholesterol in development of atherosclerosis. Cholesterol
Reconstruction in the gastroesophageal junction- from routine to advanced.
The general aim of the thesis was to contribute to a more evidenced based framework in the surgical treatment of diseases in the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ), by comparing outcome, measured by complication and survival rates, and evaluate different reconstructions regarding long-term symptoms and quality of life (QoL). The GEJ is a poorly defined anatomic area that represents the lower part of
Effects of pore spacing on drop size during cross-flow membrane emulsification—A numerical study
The design and pore distribution of the membrane are important factors in cross-flow membrane emulsification. To determine the effects of hydrodynamics and drop interaction on drop size, drop formation has been studied numerically using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Oil with a viscosity of 7.0 mPa s was used as the dispersed phase and water was used as the continuous phase. The conditions st
