A Comparative Study of Lignin Recovery Conditions Using GVL-Organosolv and Lignin Characterization
Delignification is a critical step of the wood fractionation process in a biorefinery. It directly influences the purity of lignin and aids in breaking bonds within lignin and lignin–carbohydrate complexes surrounding cellulose. The recalcitrant nature of lignocellulose poses challenges in fractionating the material, notably during delignification. Recent progress in understanding lignin’s phy
Nature at War, Nature at Peace
In North and East Syria—also known as Rojava—the convergence of war, politics, and environmental challenges presents a complex and pressing reality. This blog is dedicated to exploring these interlinked issues, highlighting how conflict and ecological degradation are deeply connected, and how these dynamics affect communities in varied and unequal ways.
Biologiska museet listar nya arter för Sverige 2023
Årligen upptäcks nya kärlväxter i Sverige.
The two surviving Betony localities in Denmark are located in southwestern Lolland. The future of both populations has been secured at nine reserve localities established in 2017–2024. Plants from Bjerremark (Tågerup parish) can be found at five localities: Guldborgsund Zoo and Botanical Garden, Medical-historical Museum in Næstved, the Barock Garden at Søholt castle, Røgbøllemarken in Søholt Stors

Sustainable welfare as a new paradigm in social policy
‘Transient immediate orthostatic hypotension’ is preferable to ‘initial’ orthostatic hypotension
A drop of systemic blood pressure (BP) occurring shortly after individuals move from supine or seated position to upright posture with subsequent prompt spontaneous resolution is a common physiological occurrence in humans. If the induced hypotension is severe, lightheadedness or postural instability leading to falls and injury may occur. By consensus, a transient systolic BP drop >40 mmHg within
Collective bargaining and minimum wage regime in Sweden
The 2022 EU Directive on Adequate Minimum Wages aims to ensure adequate minimum wages and strengthen collective bargaining in order to reduce in-work poverty and wage inequality. The national transposition and implementation of the Minimum Wage Directive will be heavily shaped by the existing collective bargaining and minimum wage regimes in the 27 EU Member States. To monitor and understand the p
The platformisation of modern family life : young children’s television practices
The article contributes to the research of platformisation of everyday life and children’s television use by exploring how 0-3-year-olds’ television viewing on screen media is embedded in daily social practices of families in Sweden. The article examines the research questions: 1) What social practices are organised around young children’s television viewing on screen media? 2) How can these telev
Teaching the Russian War Against Ukraine : Ukraine as a Microcosm of the Paradigm Shift from International Relations to Planetary Politics
The impact of the Russian war against Ukraine should have far-reaching repercussions on the teaching of International Relations (IR) and European Union (EU) studies. In this article, it is argued that Ukrainian resistance to the invasion must be part of an important shift in thinking about IR and the EU within holistic planetary politics. First, the terminologies and technologies of teaching IR an
Water management of proton exchange membrane fuel cells : two-phase flow simulation in gas diffusion layers and channels
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells are a promising green energy conversion technology for clean and sustainable power generation. However, effective water management remains a critical challenge. Water produced by electrochemical reactions can accumulate within porous electrodes and flow channels, leading to flooding that impedes the reverse transport of reactant gases to the reaction zone, there
Gifts as Media in the Construction of Princes : A Case Study of Duke Johan of Östergötland
This article examines the media construction of Duke Johan of Östergötland (1589–1618), a Swedish prince, through the lens of his recorded gift giving practices. It posits that gifts should be conceptualized as media, shaping the construction of Duke Johan as a ruler and virtuous prince, both in the early seventeenth century and for posterity. By analyzing the remediation of Duke Johan’s gift givi

Kinship and opportunity: Swedish chain migration to the United States, 1880–1920
Between 1850 and 1930, millions of Europeans emigrated to the United States, attracted by opportunities for a better life. We study the role of migrant networks in fostering emigration, using individual-level Swedish full-count census data for men and women, linked to emigration records. Our findings show that having previously migrating siblings was an important determinant of emigration, particu
Single-Shot, High-Repetition Rate Carrier-Envelope-Phase Detection of Ultrashort Laser Pulses
We propose a single-shot Carrier-Envelope Phase measurement scheme, based on evaluating f-2f fringes by means of optical Fourier transform. The method is suitable for measuring at high-repetition rate (> 200kHz) and low pulse energy.
Mesenteric Venous Thrombosis
Acute mesenteric venous thrombosis accounts for up to 20% of all patients with acute mesenteric ischemia in high-income countries and is a very difficult disease to diagnose on clinical grounds. However, owing to the increased availability and evolution of computed tomography in high-income countries, early diagnosis prior to the development of peritonitis is often possible. First-line therapy is
Three-dimensional aortic arch geometry and blood flow in neonates after surgical repair for aortic coarctation
Background: Recurrent coarctation of the aorta (re-CoA) is a well-known although not fully understood complication after surgical repair, typically occurring in 10%–20% of cases within months after discharge. Objectives: To (1) characterize geometry of the aortic arch and blood flow from pre-discharge magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in neonates after CoA repair; and (2) compare these measures bet
