Simulating Regional Vegetation-climate Dynamics for Middle America: Tropical Versus Temperate Applications

Regional vegetation-climate modelling studies have typically focused on boreal or temperate ecosystems in North America and Europe, almost completely overlooking tropical ecosystems. We present the first results of simulated regional vegetation-climate dynamics in Middle America as simulated by the model, LPJ-GUESS. The Kappa statistic indicated poor agreement, with a Kappa value of 0.301. When we

Identification of a Danger-Associated Peptide From Apolipoprotein B100 (ApoBDS-1) That Triggers Innate Proatherogenic Responses

Background-Subendothelial deposited low-density lipoprotein particles are a known inflammatory factor in atherosclerosis. However, the causal components derived from low-density lipoprotein are still poorly defined. Apolipoprotein B100 (ApoB100) is the unexchangeable protein component of low-density lipoprotein, and the progression of atherosclerosis is associated with immune responses to ApoB100-

Lipid polyunsaturation determines the extent of membrane structural changes induced by Amphotericin B in Pichia pastoris yeast

The activity of the potent but highly toxic antifungal drug Amphotericin B (AmB), used intravenously to treat systemic fungal and parasitic infections, is widely accepted to result from its specific interaction with the fungal sterol ergosterol. While the effect of sterols on AmB activity has been intensely investigated, the role of membrane phospholipid composition has largely been ignored, and s

Evaluation of Modern Irrigation Techniques with Brackish Water

Popular Abstract in English Improving irrigation practices and optimal exploitation of available water resources are vital issues facing water scarcity and similar problems in arid and semiarid countries (e.g., Egypt and Tunisia). In these countries, the use of saline and low quality irrigation water (i.e., brackish irrigation water) is often associated by soil salinization risk and soil degradatiModern irrigation techniques are becoming increasingly important in water-scarce countries especially in arid and semiarid regions. Higher crop production and better water use efficiency are usually achieved by drip irrigation as compared to other irrigation methods. Furthermore, by using drip irrigation simultaneously with brackish irrigation water, some of the water stress due to shortage of fre

Fire evacuation in underground transportation systems: a review of accidents and research

A review of literature related to fire evacuation in underground transportation systems, e.g., tunnels and subway stations, was carried out with the objectives (1) to identify a theoretical framework that can help understand of human behaviour in the event of a fire in underground transportation systems, (2) to use the theoretical framework to analyse and to identify problems related to fire evacu

Functional text geometry: The essentials of Perspective Text Analysis

The production of string rotation and pattern dynamics through the generation of text must build on the presence of a reversible rotary motor which has a synthesizing capacity. This is the discovered AaO-mechanism, which has the power to capture synthesis through emerging AaO-rings. Further, the transcription through the Functional Clause (FC) provides the foundation for their differentiation and

Immuno-CoPS (conducting paper strips) for futuristic cost-effective cancer diagnostics

The fabrication of cost-effective, rapid and specific paper based point-of-care (POC) diagnostics based on the principles of bio-recognition is currently at the vanguard of biomedical research, as it is playing a key role in early diagnosis and treatment, resulting in the inhibition of infection and reducing the mortality rate. In the present report, we demonstrate that biomolecules can be directl

Designed Quasi-1D Potential Structures Realized in Compositionally Graded InAs1-xPx Nanowires.

III-V semiconductor heterostructures are important components of many solid-state optoelectronic devices, but the ability to control and tune the electrical and optical properties of these structures in conventional device geometries is fundamentally limited by the bulk dimensionality and the inability to accommodate lattice-mismatched material combinations. Here we demonstrate how semiconductor n

Is CGRP a marker for chronic migraine?

Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) research was initiated by Poyner et al.,(1) who found that the calcitonin gene encodes the 37-amino acid neuropeptide CGRP in neuronal tissue. Within months, the Lund group produced antibodies toward α-CGRP and developed sensitive methods to study the role of this peptide in the cranial circulation. Intracranial vessels and the trigeminal ganglion harbor this

Stent-graft placement for urgent treatment or prevention of bleeding

Background: Stent-graft treatment of the patients with ongoing bleeding may be beneficial in specific situations, especially when preservation of blood flow to the distant organs is important. Purpose: To present the results of stent-graft placement for urgent treatment or prevention of the bleeding. Material and Methods: Stent-graft placement was performed urgently for the treatment of active ble

Investigation of microcracks in ferroelectric materials by application of a grain--boundary--motivated cohesive law

Ferroelectric materials exhibit a huge potential for engineering applications - ranging from electrical actuators (inverse piezoelectric effect) to sensor technology (direct piezoelectric effect). To give an example, lead zirconate titanate (PZT) is a typical perovskite ion crystal possessing ferroelectric properties. In this contribution, we are particularly interested in the modelling of microcr

Komplettering av kärlväxtfloran i Blekinge

Hela 122 nya arter för Blekinge – varav åtta även nya för Sverige – har hittats sedan Blekinges flora kom ut 2006. Lars Fröberg presenterar här den digra fyndlistan.

Human uniqueness, bodily mimesis and the evolution of language

I argue that an evolutionary adaptation for bodily mimesis, the volitional use of the body as a representational devise, is the “small difference” that gave rise to unique and yet pre-linguistic features of humanity such as (over)imitation, pedagogy, intentional communication and the possibility of a cumulative, representational culture. Furthermore, it is this that made the evolution of language

The relation between the Good-Walker and triple-regge formalisms for diffractive excitation

In this Letter we analyze the relation between the triple-pomeron and Good-Walker formalism's for diffractive excitation in DIS and hadronic collisions. In both approaches gap events are interpreted as the shadow of absorption into inelastic channels. We here argue that the two formalisms are just different views of the same phenomenon. We first demonstrate how this relation works in a simple toy

Terms, definitions and measurements to describe sonographic features of myometrium and uterine masses: a consensus opinion from the Morphological Uterus Sonographic Assessment (MUSA) group

The MUSA (Morphological Uterus Sonographic Assessment) statement is a consensus statement on terms, definitions and measurements that may be used to describe and report the sonographic features of the myometrium using gray-scale sonography, color/power Doppler and three-dimensional ultrasound imaging. The terms and definitions described may form the basis for prospective studies to predict the ris

Risk factors for infections with extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli in a county of Southern Sweden.

It is important to identify patients who are at risk for infections with extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria in order to reduce mortality, to avoid spread of resistant bacteria in hospitals, and to minimize the number of patients receiving unnecessary treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics. A case-control survey among Swedish patients was performed at Skåne University Hospit
