Alcohol intake and breast cancer in the European prospective investigation into cancer and nutrition

Alcohol intake has been associated to breast cancer in pre and postmenopausal women; however results are inconclusive regarding tumor hormonal receptor status, and potential modifying factors like age at start drinking. Therefore, we investigated the relation between alcohol intake and the risk of breast cancer using prospective observational data from the European Prospective Investigation into C

A two-layer canopy model with thermal inertia for an improved snowpack energy balance below needleleaf forest (model SNOWPACK, version 3.2.1, revision 741)

A new, two-layer canopy module with thermal inertia as part of the detailed snow model SNOWPACK (version 3.2.1) is presented and evaluated. As a by-product of these new developments, an exhaustive description of the canopy module of the SNOWPACK model is provided, thereby filling a gap in the existing literature. In its current form, the two-layer canopy module is suited for evergreen needleleaf f

Endogenous BDNF regulates induction of intrinsic neuronal growth programs in injured sensory neurons

Identification of the molecule(s) that globally induce a robust regenerative state in sensory neurons following peripheral nerve injury remains elusive. A potential candidate is brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), the sole neurotrophin upregulated in sensory neurons after peripheral nerve injury. Here we tested the hypothesis that BDNF plays a critical role in the regenerative response of ma

Eating and Hypothalamus Changes in Behavioral-Variant Frontotemporal Dementia

Objective: Behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is a progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder, clinically characterized by changes in cognition, personality, and behavior. Marked disturbances in eating behavior, such as overeating and preference for sweet foods, are also commonly reported. The hypothalamus plays a critical role in feeding regulation, yet the relation between path

Short-term prediction of influent flow rate and ammonia concentration in municipal wastewater treatment plants

The prediction of the influent load is of great importance for the improvement of the control system to a large wastewater treatment plant. A systematic data analysis method is presented in this paper in order to estimate and predict the periodicity of the influent flow rate and ammonia (NH3) concentrations: 1) data filtering using wavelet decomposition and reconstruction; 2) typical cycle identif

Revision of the European species of Omphale Haliday (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Eulophidae).

The European species of Omphale Haliday (Eulophidae: Entedoninae) are revised. The revision includes 37 species, of which eleven are newly described and the remaining 26 species are redescribed. The species are classified into six species groups, with six unplaced species. All species are fully diagnosed and thoroughly illustrated. Identification keys are provided for females and males. Two new mo

G Protein-coupled Receptor 30 (GPR30) Forms a Plasma Membrane Complex With Membrane-associated Guanylate Kinases (MAGUKs) and AKAP5 That Constitutively Inhibits cAMP Production.

GPR30, or G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER), is a GPCR reported to bind 17β-estradiol (E2), couple to the G proteins Gs and Gi/o, and mediate non-genomic estrogenic responses. However, controversies exist regarding the receptor pharmacological profile, effector coupling, and subcellular localization. We addressed the role of the type I PSD-95/Discs-large/ZO-1 homology (PDZ) motif at the r

Rating curve uncertainty and change detection in discharge time series : Case study with 44-year historic data from the Nyangores River, Kenya

The intersection of the developing topic of rating curve and discharge series uncertainty with the topic of hydrological change detection (e.g., in response to land cover or climatic change) has not yet been well studied. The work herein explores this intersection, with consideration of a long-term discharge response (1964-2007) for a ~650-km2 headwater basin of the Mara River in west Kenya, start

Effect of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide on the Thermodynamics of Model Blends of Styrene-Acrylonitrile Copolymer and Poly(methyl methacrylate) Studied by Small-Angle Neutron Scattering

Quantitative analysis of small angle neutron scattering (SANS) data from homogeneous multicomponent mixtures of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) and two polymers is presented for the first time. The two polymers used in this study were styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) and deuterated poly(methyl methacrylate) (dPMMA). Model polymers were used to facilitate comparisons between theory and

Wildfires in boreal ecoregions: Evaluating the power law assumption and intra-annual and interannual variations

Wildfires are a major driver of ecosystem development and contributor to carbon emissions in boreal forests. We analyzed the contribution of fires of different fire size classes to the total burned area and suggest a novel fire characteristic, the characteristic fire size, i.e., the fire size class with the highest contribution to the burned area, its relation to bioclimatic conditions, and intra-

The PID+p controller structure and its contextual autotuning

A previous paper addressed the "PI+p" controller (a PI augmented with an additional, stable pole) and demonstrated its advantages over standard PIs, particularly if tuned with a combined model-relay-based method along the "contextual" approach proposed in another recent work. This manuscript extends the scenario to the PID+p structure, with obvious meaning, and applies the contextual approach to i

Association between anorexia nervosa and type 2 diabetes in Sweden: Etiological clue for the primary prevention of type 2 diabetes.

Caloric restriction has been found to be protective against the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) in experimental animal studies. However, studies examining this association in humans are limited. In the present study, we examined whether individuals with anorexia nervosa, one marker of severe caloric restriction in humans, have a low incidence of T2D by using several Swedish registrie

Vowel spaces in Swedish adolescents with cochlear implants

Abstract in UndeterminedThis paper examines vowel production in Swedish adolescents with cochlear implants. Twelve adolescents with cochlear implants and 11 adolescents with normal hearing participated. Measurements were made of the first and second formants in all the nine long Swedish vowels. The values in hertz were bark-transformed, and two measures of the size of the vowel space were obtained

Dysregulated dopamine storage increases the vulnerability to alpha-synuclein in nigral neurons

Impairments in the capacity of dopaminergic neurons to handle cytoplasmic dopamine may be a critical factor underlying the selective vulnerability of midbrain dopamine neurons in Parkinson's disease. Furthermore, toxicity of alpha-synuclein in dopaminergic neurons has been suggested to be mediated by direct interaction between dopamine and alpha-synuclein through formation of abnormal alpha-synucl

Validation and analysis of detailed kinetic models for ethylene combustion

Present work aims at evaluation of contemporary comprehensive detailed kinetic mechanisms for ethylene combustion, including the Konnov mechanism, LLNL nButane mechanism, San Diego (UCSD) mechanism and USC mechanism. These models have been validated by extensive comparison with available experimental data on ethylene ignition and flame propagation. The experimental data from the literature have be

The Little Ice Age: evidence from a sediment record in Gullmar Fjord, Swedish west coast

We discuss the climatic and environmental changes during the last millennium in NE Europe based on a ca. 8-m long high-resolved and well-dated marine sediment record from the deepest basin of Gullmar Fjord (SW Sweden). According to the Pb-210- and C-14-datings, the record includes the period of the late Holocene characterised by anomalously cold summers and well-known as the Little Ice Age (LIA).

Non-Parametric High-Resolution SAR Imaging

The development of high-resolution two-dimensional spectral estimation techniques is of notable interest in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging. Typically, data-independent techniques are exploited to form the SAR images, although such approaches will suffer from limited resolution and high sidelobe levels. Recent work on data-adaptive approaches have shown that both the iterative adaptive appr

Effect of TiO2 Formation on the Free Volume Properties of Electrospun PMMA Nanohybrids

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) has been performed on a series of PMMA nanohybrids containing nanometric TiO2, which were produced by means of different preparation methods, i.e., melt mixing, electrospinning combined with solution mixing, or in-situ sol gel growth methods, to study the effect of filler content and constituents on the free volume properties. The PMMA nanocomposi
