Recombination and introgression of nuclear and chloroplast genomes between the peat mosses, Sphagnum capillifolium and Sphagnum quinquefarium

Haploid hybrid gametophytes are often present at low frequencies in sympatric populations of Sphagnum capillifolium and Sphagnum quinquefarium. We used intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers and polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism of the trnL(UAA) intron of the chloroplast genome to reveal the nuclear and chloroplast composition of mature hybrid gametophytes from

Inner-sphere and outer-sphere complexation of a polycarboxylic acid at the water-boehmite (gamma-AlOOH) interface: A combined potentiometric and IR spectroscopic study

Speciation and equilibria of 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylate (pyromellitate) at the water-boehmite (gamma-AlOOH) interface were studied in 0.1 M Na(Cl) at 298 K. Surface equilibrium analyses were based upon potentiometric and adsorption measurements in the range 4.5 < pH < 10.0. To characterize the surface complexes at the molecular level, attenuated total reflectance infrared spectra were recorde

The effects of platelet apheresis in total hip replacement surgery on platelet activation

Background: Autologous platelet rich plasma (PRP) harvest with autotransfusion devices has been used for 10 years in cardiac surgery and recently in orthopedics as a blood saving method. The quality of the harvested platelets has not been adequately examined, in part because of methodological difficulties in studying platelet function during surgery. Methods: Twenty patients undergoing primary to

A dataset of human cornea proteins identified by Peptide mass fingerprinting and tandem mass spectrometry

Diseases of the cornea are extremely common and cause severe visual impairment worldwide. To explore the basic molecular mechanisms involved in corneal health and disease, the present study characterizes the proteome of the normal human cornea. All proteins were extracted from the central 7-mm region of 12 normal human donor corneas containing all layers: epithelium, Bowman's layer, stroma, Descem

Gene-centric Association Signals for Lipids and Apolipoproteins Identified via the HumanCVD BeadChip

Blood lipids are important cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors with both genetic and environmental determinants. The Whitehall II study (n = 5592) was genotyped with the gene-centric HumanCVD BeadChip (Illumina). We identified 195 SNPs in 16 genes/regions associated with 3 major lipid fractions and 2 apolipoprotein components at p < 10(-5), with the associations being broadly concordant with

Tetranuclear iron(III) complexes of an octadentate pyridine-carboxylate ligand and their catalytic activity in alkane oxidation by hydrogen peroxide

Reaction of the octadentate ligand 2,6-bis{3-[N,N-di(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]propoxy}benzoic acid (LH) with Fe(ClO4)(3) leads to the formation of the tetranuclear complexes [Fe-4(mu-O)(2)(LH)(2)(ClCH2 CO2)(4)](ClO4)(4) (1), [{Fe-2(mu-O)L(R-CO2)}(2)](ClO4)(4) (2 R = C6H5-, 3 R = CH3-, 4, R = ClCH2-). The crystal structures of complexes 1 and 2 reveal that they consist of two Fe-2(III)(mu-O)(mu-RCO2)(

The influence of aerosol concentrations on the glaciation and precipitation of a cumulus cloud

The response of the glaciation and precipitation of U multi-thermal cumulus cloud to changes in the aerosol concentration has been assessed in a series of sensitivity tests with the UMIST Explicit Microphysics Model (EMM). A simulation of this cloud from the Met Office cloud-resolving model (CRM) has been utilized in these tests. This cumulus cloud was observed h aircraft during the initial stage

Characterization of insulin microcrystals using powder diffraction and multivariate data analysis

Twelve different microcrystalline insulin formulations were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction and were shown to have very characteristic patterns. Three of the formulations crystallize in the same crystal system, but have structural differences in the N-terminal B-chain of the insulin molecule. This difference was efficiently detected in the powder patterns. The sensitivity of the method ma

Influence of the fracture softening behaviour of wood on load-COD curve and R-curve

A cohesive crack model is used to analyse failure of wood in mode I along the grain. Several configurations of the gradual fracture softening behaviour of an interface, meshed with joint-elements located on the potential crack path, are investigated. Different constitutive laws, obtained from a single normalized polynomial function, are tested in order to estimate the influence of parameters such

On the approximability of maximum and minimum edge clique partition problems

We consider the following clustering problems: given an undirected graph, partition its vertices into disjoint clusters such that each cluster forms a clique and the number of edges within the clusters is maximized (Max-ECP), or the number of edges between clusters is minimized (Min-ECP). These problems arise naturally in the DNA clone classification. We investigate the hardness of finding such pa

Volumetric and dosimetric evaluation of radiation treatment plans: radiation conformity index

PURPOSE: The use of conformal radiation therapy has grown substantially during the last years since three-dimensional (3D) treatment planning systems with beams-eye-view planning has become commercially available. We studied the degree of conformity reached in clinical routines for some common diagnoses treated at our department by calculating a radiation conformity index (RCI). METHODS AND MATERI

Clinical outcome after poststernotomy mediastinitis: Vacuum-assisted closure versus conventional treatment

Background. The conventional treatment for poststernotomy mediastinitis usually involves surgical revision, closed irrigation, or reconstruction with omentum or pectoral muscle flaps. Recently, vacuum-assisted closure has been successfully used in poststernotomy mediastinitis. The aim of the present study was to compare the clinical outcome and survival in 101 patients undergoing vacuum-assisted c

Downsizing proteolytic digestion and analysis using dispenser-aided sample handling and nanovial matrix-assisted laser/desorption ionization-target arrays.

An efficient technique for enzymatic digestion of proteins in nanovial arrays and identification by peptide mass fingerprinting using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI-MS) is presented in this work. Through dispensing of a protein solution with simultaneous evaporation the protein (substrate) is concentrated up to 300 times in-vial. At higher substrate concentrations the catalytic

Risk of misinterpretation of nearly degenerate pair bands as chiral partners in nuclei

The experimental information on the observed nearly degenerate bands in the N = 75 isotones, in particular Pr-134 and Pm-136, which are often considered as the best candidates for chiral bands, is critically analyzed. Most properties of the bands, in particular, the recently measured branching ratios and lifetimes, are in clear disagreement with the interpretation of the two bands as chiral bands.

Molecular and biochemical analysis of the galactose phenotype of dairy Streptococcus thermophilus strains reveals four different fermentation profiles

Lactose-limited fermentations of 49 dairy Streptococcus thermophilus strains revealed four distinct fermentation profiles with respect to galactose consumption after lactose depletion. All the strains excreted galactose into the medium during growth on lactose, except for strain IMDOST40, which also displayed extremely high galactokinase (GalK) activity. Among this strain collection eight galactos
