Skeletal muscle structural lipids improve during weight-maintenance after a very low calorie dietary intervention
Background: The objective was to investigate in a group of obese subjects the course in skeletal muscle phospholipid (SMPL) fatty acids (FA) during a 24-weeks weight maintenance program, which was preceded by a successful very low calorie dietary intervention (VLCD). Special focus was addressed to SMPL omega-3 FA, which is a lipid entity that influences insulin action. Methods: Nine obese subjects
Simulating Spinal Border Cells and Cerebellar Granule Cells under Locomotion - A Case Study of Spinocerebellar Information Processing.
The spinocerebellar systems are essential for the brain in the performance of coordinated movements, but our knowledge about the spinocerebellar interactions is very limited. Recently, several crucial pieces of information have been acquired for the spinal border cell (SBC) component of the ventral spinocerebellar tract (VSCT), as well as the effects of SBC mossy fiber activation in granule cells
On the role of hydrophobic interactions in cellulose dissolution and regeneration: Colloidal aggregates and molecular solutions
The development of strategies for dissolution and regeneration of cellulose constitutes an increasingly active research field due to the direct relevance for many production processes and applications. A wide variety of suitable solvents for cellulose are already available. However, cellulose solvents are of highly different nature reflecting the great challenges in the understanding of the subtle
Measuring hybridization in GaInAs/InP electron billiard arrays
We study low temperature magnetoconductance fluctuations in arrays of electron billiards in an effort to quantitatively measure hybridization between array elements. In contrast to previous research in the 'open' regime, which is mostly limited to the canonical AlxGa1-xAs/GaAs heterostructure, our devices are etched into the Ga0.25In0.75As/InP heterostructure. To chart hybridization (i.e. the exte

What happened to our features? visualization and understanding of scope change dynamics in a large-scale industrial setting
When developing software platforms for product lines, decisions on which features to implement are affected by factors such as changing markets and evolving technologies. Effective scoping thus requires continuous assessment of how changes in the domain impact scoping decisions. Decisions may have to be changed as circumstances change, resulting in a dynamic evolution of the scope of software asse
Interpretation of the large-deformation high-spin bands in select A=158-168 nuclei
The high-spin rotational bands in Hf-168 and the triaxial bands in Lu nuclei are analyzed using the configuration-constrained cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky (CNS) model. Special attention is given to the up-sloping extruder orbitals. The relative alignment between the bands which appear to correspond to triaxial shape is also considered, including the yrast ultrahigh-spin band in Er-158. This comparis
Odd-parity 100Sn Core Excitations
Odd-parity core excited states have been identified in two close neighbors of Sn-100: Pd-96 and Ag-97. This was done in an fusion-evaporation experiment, using a Ni-58 beam on a Sc-45 target. Even-parity core excited states in these nuclei are very well reproduced in large scale (LSSM) calculations in which particle-hole excitations are allowed with up to five g(9/2) protons and neutrons across th

Bandwidth Limitations for Scattering of Higher Order Electromagnetic Spherical Waves with Implications for the Antenna Scattering Matrix
Various physical limitations in electromagnetic theory and antenna theory have received considerable attention recently. However, there are no previous limitations on the scattering of higher order electromagnetic vector spherical waves, despite the widespread use of spherical wave decompositions. In the present paper, bandwidth limitations on the scattering matrix are derived for a wide class of

Monte Carlo simulations of a clay inspired model suspension: the role of rim charge
We present a theoretical investigation of a model clay dispersion in 1-1 salt solutions by varying the particle volume fraction and ionic strength as well as the charge distribution on the clay platelets. The platelets are modeled as discs with charged sites distributed on a hexagonal lattice. The edge sites can be positively charged while the remaining sites are negative giving rise to a strong c
Composition and physical properties of the Asian Tropopause Aerosol Layer and the North American Tropospheric Aerosol Layer
Recent studies revealed layers of enhanced aerosol scattering in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere over Asia (Asian Tropopause Aerosol Layer (ATAL)) and North America (North American Tropospheric Aerosol Layer (NATAL)). We use a sectional aerosol model (Community Aerosol and Radiation Model for Atmospheres (CARMA)) coupled with the Community Earth System Model version 1 (CESM1) to explo
Antibody response to IgA-binding streptococcal M proteins in children with IgA nephropathy
Methods. Blood samples from patients with IgAN (n = 21) and age-matched controls (n = 83) were assayed by ELISA to detect an IgG antibody response to the IgA-BRs of the M4, M22 and M60 proteins. Antibodies were assayed for each IgA-BR separately and the results were combined. Results. Antibody levels to the IgA-BRs were significantly higher in IgAN patients than controls (P = 0.016), particularly
A new osmium-polymer modified screen-printed graphene electrode for fructose detection
This paper describes the development and performance of the first fructose biosensor based on a commercial screen-printed graphene electrode (SPGE). The electrode was modified with an osmium-polymer, which allowed the efficient wiring of the enzyme fructose dehydrogenase (FDH). The immobilization of both osmium-polymer and FDH was realized in an easy way. Aliquots of 10 mu L, Os-polymer and 10 mu
Single-shot holography using high-order harmonics
This work demonstrates single-shot holography with ultrashort XUV pulses. The pulses are generated by high-harmonic generation in an Ar gas cell and focused to produce a strongly divergent reference beam suitable for in-line holography of micrometer size objects. The achieved intensity of the high-order harmonics in the XUV regime is sufficient for single-shot holography with good signal-to-noise
PKC alpha expression is a marker for breast cancer aggressiveness
Background: Protein kinase C (PKC) isoforms are potential targets for breast cancer therapy. This study was designed to evaluate which PKC isoforms might be optimal targets for different breast cancer subtypes. Results: In two cohorts of primary breast cancers, PKC alpha levels correlated to estrogen and progesterone receptor negativity, tumor grade, and proliferative activity, whereas PKC delta a
