Emerging affinity-based proteomic technologies for large-scale plasma profiling in cardiovascular disease

Plasma biomarkers that reflect molecular states of the cardiovascular system are central for clinical decision making. Routinely used plasma biomarkers include troponins, natriuretic peptides, and lipoprotein particles, yet interrogate only a modest subset of pathways relevant to cardiovascular disease. Systematic profiling of a larger portion of circulating plasma proteins (the plasma proteome) w

Linking Swedish health data registers to establish a research database and a shared decision-making tool in hip replacement

Background: Sweden offers a unique opportunity to researchers to construct comprehensive databases that encompass a wide variety of healthcare related data. Statistics Sweden and the National Board of Health and Welfare collect individual level data for all Swedish residents that ranges from medical diagnoses to socioeconomic information. In addition to the information collected by governmental ag

Effect of realistic nuclear charge distributions on isotope shifts and progress towards the extraction of higher-order nuclear radial moments

Atomic spectral lines from different isotopes display a small shift in energy, commonly referred to as the line isotope shift. One of the components of the isotope shift is the field shift, which depends on the extent and the shape of the nuclear charge density distribution. The purpose of this work is to investigate how sensitive field shifts are with respect to variations in the nuclear size and

T-matrix simulations of a collection of scatterers for validation of numerical electromagnetic solvers

This paper presents the use of the T-matrix method for a collection of scatterers for validation purposes of large-scale numerical electromagnetic scattering problems. In order to validate the simulation results for large geometries the T-matrix solution for a collection of spheres and disks can be used. Scattering results using the T-matrix method, FDTD and MoM are compared. The results show that

Optimized peptide separation and identification for mass spectrometry based proteomics via free-flow electrophoresis

Multidimensional LC-MS based shotgun proteomics experiments at the peptide level have traditionally been carried out by ion exchange in the first dimension and reversed-phase liquid chromatography in the second. Recently, it has been shown that isoelectric focusing (IEF) is an interesting alternative approach to ion exchange separation of peptides in the first dimension. Here we present an improve

Direct estimate of the haemophilia B (factor IX deficiency) mutation rate and of the ratio of the sex-specific mutation rates in Sweden

Mutation rates for X-linked recessive diseases have so far been estimated indirectly by postulating an equilibrium between the loss of defective genes caused by the low reproductive fitness of affected males and the gain resulting from new mutations. Here, for the first time, we directly estimate both the overall and sex-specific mutation rates for haemophilia B by detecting the gene defect of the

Computer based quantitative analysis of capillary abnormalities in systemic sclerosis and its relation to plasma concentration of von Willebrand factor

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate an objective and quantitative method for assessment of capillary abnormalities in systemic sclerosis (SSc).METHODS: Nailfold capillaries were investigated by capillary microscopy and photographed in 17 consecutive SSc patients (five with diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis (dSSc) and 12 with limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (lSSc)) and in 17 healthy controls. Investiga

Unraveling the Decomposition Process of Lead(II) Acetate : Anhydrous Polymorphs, Hydrates, and Byproducts and Room Temperature Phosphorescence

Lead(II) acetate [Pb(Ac)2, where Ac = acetate group (CH3-COO-)2] is a very common salt with many and varied uses throughout history. However, only lead(II) acetate trihydrate [Pb(Ac)2·3H2O] has been characterized to date. In this paper, two enantiotropic polymorphs of the anhydrous salt, a novel hydrate [lead(II) acetate hemihydrate: Pb(Ac)2·1/2H2O], and two decomposition products [corresponding t

Oesophageal perforations in Iceland : a whole population study on incidence, aetiology and surgical outcome

BACKGROUND: Oesophageal perforation is a rare but life-threatening condition with a significant morbidity and mortality. In this retrospective, nationwide study, the results of oesophageal perforation are reported for a well defined cohort, with special emphasis on the incidence, aetiology and results of surgical treatment.MATERIAL AND METHODS: 29 consecutive patients (16 males) were diagnosed wit

Strong and tuneable wet adhesion with rationally designed layer-by-layer assembled triblock copolymer films

In this study the wet adhesion between Layer-by-Layer (LbL) assembled films of triblock copolymer micelles was investigated. Through the LbL assembly of triblock copolymer micelles with hydrophobic, low glass transition temperature (Tg) middle blocks and ionic outer blocks, a network of energy dissipating polymer chains with electrostatic interactions serving as crosslinks can be built. Four tribl

The Tagging System of the BGO-OD experiment

In the course of my PhD work, I have been involved in the development and the construction of the Tagging System for the BGO-OD experiment at the ELSA accelerators of the University of Bonn.BGO-OD is a fixed target experiment for the investigation of the structure of the nucleon at low energies via the photoproduction of mesons. It consist of a central calorimeter and a forward spectrometer. The r

Side localization of parathyroid adenomas by simplified intraoperative venous sampling for parathyroid hormone

Side localization of parathyroid adenomas was performed by venous sampling for intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) in 20 consecutive patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) after induction of anesthesia. The results were thus available during surgery. Nineteen of the patients had solitary parathyroid adenoma, and one had hyperplasia. There was no complication to the procedure. A lateralizing

Hyperthyroxinemia after surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism

Episodes of transient thyrotoxicosis after surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism have previously been described, and surgical trauma to the thyroid gland has been suggested as an etiologic factor. However, there are several links between the thyroid and parathyroid hormonal systems, and therefore other explanations are possible as well. In this study we investigate pre- and postoperative serum l

Postoperative studies on parathyroid hormone secretion in patients operated on for primary hyperparathyroidism

The secretion of intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) was investigated in 11 patients operated on for parathyroid adenoma at 1 year after surgery and compared with that of seven healthy individuals and five patients operated on because of clinical and biochemical signs of primary hyperparathyroidism with equivocal diagnosis after surgery. The investigation was performed by infusing Na2EDTA and CaCl2 a
