Regional Differences in Effects of APOE epsilon 4 on Cognitive Impairment in Non-Demented Subjects

Background: The APOE epsilon 4 allele is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). APOE epsilon 4 is common in non-demented subjects with cognitive impairment. In both healthy people and people with AD, its prevalence has a north-south gradient across Europe. In the present study, we investigated whether the relation between the APOE epsilon 4 allele and cognitive impairment varied across Northe

Comprehensive genetic analysis identifies a pathognomonic NAB2/STAT6 fusion gene, nonrandom secondary genomic imbalances, and a characteristic gene expression profile in solitary fibrous tumor.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a mesenchymal neoplasm displaying variable morphologic and clinical features. To identify pathogenetically important genetic rearrangements, 44 SFTs were analyzed using a variety of techniques. Chromosome banding and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) showed recurrent breakpoints in 12q13, clustering near the NAB2 and STAT6 genes, and single nucleotide polymo

Microbubbles as a scattering contrast agent for grating-based x-ray dark-field imaging

In clinically established-absorption-based-biomedical x-ray imaging, contrast agents with high atomic numbers (e.g. iodine) are commonly used for contrast enhancement. The development of novel x-ray contrast modalities such as phase contrast and dark-field contrast opens up the possible use of alternative contrast media in x-ray imaging. We investigate using ultrasound contrast agents, which unlik

Antibiotic Prophylaxis With Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole Instead of Cloxacillin Fails to Improve Inguinal Surgical Site Infection Rate After Vascular Surgery.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) and their prevention continue to be a major point of focus in all surgical specialties today. Antibiotic prophylaxis is one of the mainstays in their prevention. Due to the consistently high proportion of infections caused by intestinal flora from the start of our wound surveillance registry in 2005, we conducted a change in prophylactic antibiotic therapy from clox

Adults with Asperger syndrome with and without a cognitive profile associated with ‘‘non-verbal learning disability.’’ A brief report

Asperger syndrome (AS) and non-verbal learning disability (NLD) are both characterized by impairments in motor coordination, visuo-perceptual abilities, pragmatics and comprehension of language and social understanding. NLD is also defined as a learning disorder affecting functions in the right cerebral hemisphere. The present study investigates if individuals with AS and a cognitive profile consi

Experiencing the role of PBL tutor.

Abstract The tutor is important for student learning in the PBL group. The students expect the tutor to monitor and steer the group process and to support the learning process, helping students to become aware of their own learning. This study aimed at investigating the PBL tutor's role. Five PBL tutors at the Speech/Language Pathology program were interviewed regarding their view of the tutors' r

Complete minimal submanifolds of compact Lie groups

We give a new method for manifacturing complete minimal submanifolds of compact Lie groups and their homogeneous quotient spaces. For this we make use of harmonic morphisms and basic representation theory of Lie groups. We then employ our method to construct many examples of compact minimal submanifolds of the special unitary groups.

Solar cycles and depositional processes in annual Be-10 from two varved lake sediment records

Beryllium 10 concentrations (Be-10(con)) were measured at annual resolution from varved sediment cores of Lakes Tiefer See (TSK) and Czechowskie (JC) for the period 1983-2009 (similar to solar cycles 22 and 23). Calibrating the Be-10(con) time-series against complementing proxy records from the same archive as well as local precipitation and neutron monitor data, reflecting solar forced changes in

Toolbox for development and validation of grey-box building models for forecasting and control

As automatic sensing and information and communication technology get cheaper, building monitoring data becomes easier to obtain. The availability of data leads to new opportunities in the context of energy efficiency in buildings. This paper describes the development and validation of a data-driven grey-box modelling toolbox for buildings. The Python toolbox is based on a Modelica library with th

Independent and Joint Effects of the MAPT and SNCA Genes in Parkinson Disease

Objective: We studied the independent and joint effects of the genes encoding alpha-synuclein (SNCA) and microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) in Parkinson disease (PD) as part of a large meta-analysis of individual data from case-control studies participating in the Genetic Epidemiology of Parkinson's Disease (GEO-PD) consortium. Methods: Participants of Caucasian ancestry were genotyped for

Spaces of becoming : the Stockholm Film Workshop as a transnational site of film production

The aim of the essay was to present the Stockholm Film Workshop (Filmverkstan, 1973–2001) and its significance as a transnational site of film production. The films and the filmmaking at the workshop are considered as part of a minor cinema film practice in David E. James’s sense. James’s theory is complemented by returning to Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s original concept of minor literatur

Multiparametric Flow Cytometry Profiling of Neoplastic Plasma Cells in Multiple Myeloma

Background and aim: The clinical impact of multiparametric flow cytometry (MFC) in multiple myeloma (MM) is still unclear and under evaluation. Further progress relies on multiparametric profiling of the neoplastic plasma cell (PC) compartment to provide an accurate image of the stage of differentiation. The primary aim of this study was to perform global analysis of CD expression on the PC compar

The myth of Sweden as a peace-power state and its religious motivations

Since the non-military dissolution of the political union with Norway in 1905, the myth of Sweden as a peace-power state, often with religious motivations, has been actual, and continuosly re-activated. In his ecumenical-political actions, Archbishop Nathan Söderblom was one of the most outstanding actors. Later, the political martyrdom of Count Folke Bernadotte, Dag Hammarskjöld, Raoul Wallenberg

Evidence for tissue factor phosphorylation and its correlation with protease activated receptor expression and the prognosis of primary breast cancer.

Tissue factor (TF)-mediated protease activated receptor (PAR)-2 signaling is associated with a pro-migratory, invasive and pro-angiogenic phenotype in experimental models of breast cancer, and has been mechanistically coupled to phosphorylation of the TF cytoplasmic domain (pTF). However, the clinical relevance of these findings are unknown. Here, we provide first in vivo evidence of TF phosphoryl
