Loss of mismatch repair protein immunostaining in colorectal adenomas from patients with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer.

Colorectal adenomas occur at younger age, at increased frequency and have a greater tendency for malignant transformation in patients with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). We performed immunostaining for the mismatch repair proteins MLH1, PMS2, MSH2 and MSH6 in 35 colorectal adenomas from 26 patients with HNPCC and identified loss of immunostaining in 23/35 (0.66) adenomas. Loss

Herodes Atticus Reflected in Occasional Poetry of Antonine Athens

The occasional poetry of the Antonine period relating to the wealthy sophist and important second century AD political personality in Athens, Herodes Atticus, is studied. Some of the functions of poetry are illustrated, as it is used by one of the leading personalities of the Second Sophistic. This study differs from previous research in focusing totally on verse inscriptions connected with Herode

Commercial Banking and Economic Development The Lebanese Experience 1856-1974

This thesis emphasises the role of commercial banks as financial intermediaries. It is primarily concerned with the development of the commercial banking system of Lebanon in the period 1856-1974, and assesses the role of the commercial banking system in Lebanon, as capital provider to economic development. This role is examined here in terms of the mobilisation of bank deposits and allocation of

Identification of conditionally expressed genes in Streptococcus pyogenes using RNA fingerprinting

RNA fingerprinting using arbitrarily primed reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was employed on isolated RNA from Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria in order to identify genes that were regulated in response to environmental changes. When S. pyogenes was cultured under glucose-rich growth conditions a number of transcriptionally up-regulated products were identified, cloned and sequenced.

Problems of language and communication in children; Identification and intervention

Syftet i studie I var att undersöka This thesis addresses identification and intervention of language and communication problems in children. The issue of identification is addressed in study I by investigating communicative ability in 18-month-old children, and in study II by exploring the prevalence of language and communication problems in children with complex problems, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Th

Acoustic excitation and transmission of lightweight structures

Popular Abstract in Swedish För att öka förståelsen för hur ljud sprider sig och strålar från byggnadskonstruktioner utförda i lättbyggnadsteknik så behövs teoretiska beräkningsmodeller. Sådana modeller presenteras i avhandlingen. Med lättbyggnadsteknik avses konstruktioner som inte är massiva, exempelvis väggar och bjälklag bestående av trä- eller stålreglar/bjälkar. Stegljudet, det vill säga detIn order to increase our knowledge of the sound transmission and radiation processes of lightweight wall and floor structures, theoretical models are needed. Detailed models may form a valuable tool. In lightweight floor structures, impact sound insulation is perhaps the most important property to consider. This thesis presents an overview of various solution strategies that may be useful in findi

Non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic neural activation in guinea-pig bronchi: powerful and frequency-dependent stabilizing effect on tone

1 We examined non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic (NANC) stimulation for its stabilizing effect on bronchial smooth-muscle tone with respect to its regulatory power and the effect of variations in neural impulse frequency. 2 The guinea-pig isolated main bronchus (n = 4-12) was pretreated with indomethacin (1O JAM) and incubated with atropine (1 pM) and guanethidine (10 JM). Electrical field stimulatio

Neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity and hypertension

OBJECTIVE: Neuropeptide Y is a co-transmitter with noradrenaline in sympathetic neurons supplying arteries and veins with potent contractile effects. To investigate the role of neuropeptide Y in hypertension, we measured the circulating levels of neuropeptide Y and noradrenaline in patients with severe hypertension. DESIGN: Samples were collected from patients with untreated, severe hypertension (

Self-regulated learning through writing on computers: Consequences for reading comprehension.

The overall aim for the present study was to analyze the consequences for reading ability among the children of a computer supported self-regulated learning environment in grade two. By means of a quasi-experimental design in a natural setting, an experimental group (n=39) was compared to a control group from a national sample (n=3409) on reading comprehension. The statistical analyses showed that

Global sequence and dispersion of ventricular repolarization: In vivo validation of non-invasive parameters using monophasic action potential mapping technique

The purposes are to validate the noninvasive parameters, QT interval, QT dispersion, Tpeak-Tend interval, and the activation recovery time (ART) for estimation of global dispersion of ventricular repolarization (DVR), and to investigate the changes of repolarization sequence and DVR by altered ventricular pacing sites. The material consisted of 12 patients (Study I) and two series healthy pigs wi

Estimation of respiration frequency using spatial information from the VCG

A new method for extracting respiratory signals from the ECG/VCG is presented. The method is based on the alignment of an observed VCG loop to a reference loop with respect to the transformations of rotation and time synchronisation. The resulting series of estimated rotation angles reflects respiratory-induced changes in the electrical axis of the heart. The respiratory frequency is estimated by

Probabilistic estimation of microarray data reliability and underlying gene expression

Background: The availability of high throughput methods for measurement of mRNA concentrations makes the reliability of conclusions drawn from the data and global quality control of samples and hybridization important issues. We address these issues by an information theoretic approach, applied to discretized expression values in replicated gene expression data. Results: Our approach yields a quan

Gene Expression Changes and Brain Plasticity after Experimental Stroke

Den kliniska termen stroke omfattar patologiska tillståndStroke is the most common life-threatening neurological disease and ranks as the third leading cause of death in major industrialized countries. It is also the leading cause of serious long-term disability and about sixty percent of survivors have disabilities in their extremities. Recovery of certain neurological functions occurs over time, which has been attributed to endogenous restorative proc

Phylogenetic reconstruction of the Neotropical family Quiinaceae (Malpighiales) based on morphology with remarks on the evolution of an androdioecious sex distribution

Based on morphology, a cladistic analysis of the Neotropical family Quiinaceae (Malpighiales) was performed to generate a hypothesis of the phylogenetic relationships within the family. The monotypic Medusagynaceae and four species of Ochnaceae were used as outgroup. Using equal weights, the Quiinaceae find strong jackknife support and all genera, apart from Lacunaria. are monophyletic. Lacunaria

Nt-proANP in plasma, a marker of salt sensitivity, is reduced in type 2 diabetes patients.

Objective. We recently showed that plasma concentration of N-terminal atrial natriuretic peptide (Nt-proANP) is strongly directly related to salt sensitivity. The aims of the present study were to test (i) whether plasma concentration of N-terminal brain natriuretic peptide (Nt-proBNP) is related to salt sensitivity and (ii) whether Nt-proANP, as a marker of salt sensitivity, differs between type
