A conflict among geniuses : challenges to the classical paradigm in Sweden, 1828–1832

This article examines challenges to the classical paradigm of education in Sweden that followed in the wake of state-initiated attempts at school reform in the first decades of the nineteenth century. When the internal disputes of the so-called ‘Genius Committee’ resulted in a failure to overcome the increasing divide between reformers, a prolific opportunity to argue the value of practical subjec

Search for heavy charged long-lived particles in proton–proton collisions at s=13TeV using an ionisation measurement with the ATLAS detector

This Letter presents a search for heavy charged long-lived particles produced in proton–proton collisions at s=13TeV at the LHC using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1fb−1 collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2015 and 2016. These particles are expected to travel with a velocity significantly below the speed of light, and therefore have a specific ionisation higher tha

Two-phonon structures for beta-decay theory

The β-decay rates of 60Ca have been studied within a microscopic model, which is based on the Skyrme interaction T45 to construct single-particle and phonon spaces. We observe a redistribution of the Gamow-Teller strength due to the phonon-phonon coupling, considered in the model. For 60Sc, the spin-parity of the ground state is found to be 1+. We predict that the half-life of 60Ca is 0.3 ms, whil

Cornering variants of the Georgi-Machacek model using Higgs precision data

We show that in the absence of trilinear terms in the scalar potential of the Georgi-Machacek model, heavy charged scalars do not necessarily decouple from the h→γγ decay amplitude. In such scenarios, measurement of the Higgs to diphoton signal strength can place stringent constraints in the parameter space. Using the projected precisions at the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) and the ILC, we find th

Electroweak and QCD corrections to Z -boson production with one b jet in a massive five-flavor scheme

We compute the O(αsα2) and O(αs2α) contributions to the production cross section of a Z boson with one b jet at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and study their phenomenological relevance for LHC physics. The accurate prediction of hadronic Z+b-jet production is needed to control a background that greatly affects both the measurement of Higgs-boson properties and the searches of new physics at the

Search for pair production of Higgsinos in final states with at least three b -tagged jets in s =13 TeV pp collisions using the ATLAS detector

A search for pair production of the supersymmetric partners of the Higgs boson (higgsinos H) in gauge-mediated scenarios is reported. Each higgsino is assumed to decay to a Higgs boson and a gravitino. Two complementary analyses, targeting high- and low-mass signals, are performed to maximize sensitivity. The two analyses utilize LHC pp collision data at a center-of-mass energy s=13 TeV, the forme

Essays on Credit Ratings

This thesis consists of four self-contained articles, all of which contribute to the empirical research on credit ratings. Broadly speaking, the first two papers highlight two less ordinary “uses” of credit ratings, in the context of (1) measuring financial constraints and (2) bond market segmentation. The last two papers focus on a relatively new concept in the credit ratings’ literature, specifi

Search for pair production of heavy vectorlike quarks decaying into hadronic final states in pp collisions at s =13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is presented for the pair production of heavy vectorlike quarks, TT or BB, that decay into final states with jets and no reconstructed leptons. Jets in the final state are classified using a deep neural network as arising from hadronically decaying W/Z bosons, Higgs bosons, top quarks, or background. The analysis uses data from the ATLAS experiment corresponding to 36.1 fb-1 of proton-pro

Search for lepton-flavor violation in different-flavor, high-mass final states in pp collisions at s =13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is performed for a heavy particle decaying into different-flavor, dilepton pairs (eμ, eτ or μτ), using 36.1 fb-1 of proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV collected in 2015-2016 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No excesses over the Standard Model predictions are observed. Bayesian lower limits at the 95% credibility level are placed on the mass of a Z′ boson, the mass

Intra-seasonal variation of injury patterns among German Bundesliga soccer players

OBJECTIVE: High fluctuations in injury-risk during the playing season in soccer have been reported. As seasons are structured in periods with homogenous loads and intensities, we investigated injury-risk over season periods, contrarily to previous studies adopting a month-based approach.DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2.METHODS: Incidence-rate ratios (IRRs) for match and training injuries

Effects of acute psychological stress on athletic performance in elite male swimmers

BACKGROUND: While physical activity has been shown to affect psychological as well as physiological stress responses, less research has explored the effects of acute stress on athletic performance. The current study hence aimed to investigate the effect of an Acute Psychological Stress (APS) provocation on performance and plasma lactate concentration during a following 200m swim race among male el

Measurement of dijet azimuthal decorrelations in pp collisions at s =8 TeV with the ATLAS detector and determination of the strong coupling

A measurement of the rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of dijet azimuthal decorrelations is presented, using the quantity RΔφ. The quantity RΔφ specifies the fraction of the inclusive dijet events in which the azimuthal opening angle of the two jets with the highest transverse momenta is less than a given value of the parameter Δφmax. The quantity RΔφ is measured in proton-proton collisi

Measuring global surgery, obstetrics and anaesthesia from health systems to patients

BackgroundWorldwide, an estimated 5 billion people lack access to safe, affordable surgical care when needed. This leads to millions of avertable deaths and unnecessary morbidity each year. To change this situation, urgent action is needed at many levels, but indicators and data have been lacking to guide improvement.AimsThe aim of this thesis was to describe and evaluate measurement of surgical p
