The effect of interface topography for Ultrasonic Consolidation of aluminium

Ultrasonic Consolidation (UC) is an additive manufacturing technology which is based on the sequential solid-state ultrasonic welding of metal foils. UC presents a rapid and adaptive alternative process, to other metal-matrix embedding technologies, for 'smart' metal composite material production. A challenge that exists however relates to optimising, for bond density and plastic flow, the interla

Comparison of abdominal adiposity and overall obesity in relation to risk of small intestinal cancer in a European Prospective Cohort

Background: The etiology of small intestinal cancer (SIC) is largely unknown, and there are very few epidemiological studies published to date. No studies have investigated abdominal adiposity in relation to SIC. Methods: We investigated overall obesity and abdominal adiposity in relation to SIC in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), a large prospective cohort

The unfolding of agency autonomy over time : The Swedish Social Insurance Agency 2003-2015

The literature on agency autonomy typically assumes that agency autonomy is relatively stable over time, and that it unfolds primarily in the relation between agencies and their parent ministries. This chapter challenges these assumptions. It explores how agency autonomy unfolds over time from a system-wide perspective, including the relation between the agency and its parent ministry, the relatioThe literature on agency autonomy typically assumes that agency autonomy is relatively stable over time and that it unfolds primarily in the relation between agencies and their parent ministries. Novel metabolites from the roots of Cadaba natalensis

From an extract of the roots of Cadaba natalensis Sond. the novel macrocyclic dibenzo-diazacyclododecanedione 1 was isolated together with (S)-2-ethyl-2-methyloxazolidin-5-one (2a). In addition, the five known compounds were obtained. Of these, (R)-5-ethyl-5-methyloxazolidin-2-one (3) is reported as a natural product for the first time. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by a

Pharmacological secondary prevention in patients with mesenterial artery atherosclerosis and arterial embolism

Visceral arteries such as the coeliac (CA), superior mesenteric (SMA), and the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) might be affected by atherosclerotic occlusive lesions with or without thrombosis or embolization causing ischaemic symptoms from the gastrointestinal tract. After treatment of an acute event, these patients should be offered both non-pharmacological and pharmacological secondary preventi

Synthesis and Crystal Structure of Potassium Tetranitrato Palladate(II)

K2 [Pd(NO3)4] has been prepared and its crystal structure determined by use of a CAD-4 diffractometer with monochromatic Mo Kα radiation. The space group is P21/c with Z = 4; a= 7.940(2); b = 15.469(4); c = 9.453(2) Å; β = 91.10(3)°. The refinement converged to R = 0.023. The global methane budget 2000-2012

The global methane (CH4) budget is becoming an increasingly important component for managing realistic pathways to mitigate climate change. This relevance, due to a shorter atmospheric lifetime and a stronger warming potential than carbon dioxide, is challenged by the still unexplained changes of atmospheric CH4 over the past decade. Emissions and concentrations of CH4 are continuing to increase,

Rapidity and centrality dependence of particle production for identified hadrons in Cu + Cu collisions at s NN =200 GeV

The BRAHMS collaboration has measured transverse momentum spectra of pions, kaons, protons, and antiprotons at rapidities 0 and 3 for Cu+Cu collisions at sNN=200 GeV. As the collisions become more central the collective radial flow increases while the temperature of kinetic freeze-out decreases. The temperature is lower and the radial flow weaker at forward rapidity. Pion and kaon yields with tran

Lessons from basic pancreatic beta cell research in type-2 diabetes and vascular complications

The changes in life-style with increased access of food and reduced physical activity have resulted in the global epidemic of obesity. Consequently, individuals with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease have also escalated. A central organ in the development of diabetes is the pancreas, and more specifically the pancreatic beta cells within the islets of Langerhans. Beta cells have been assi

Atmospheric mercury measurements onboard the CARIBIC passenger aircraft

Goal of the project CARIBIC (Civil Aircraft for the Regular Investigation of the atmosphere Based on an Instrumented Container) is to carry out regular and detailed observations of atmospheric composition (particles and gases) at cruising altitudes of passenger aircraft, i.e. at 9-12km. Mercury has been measured since May 2005 by a modified Tekran instrument (Tekran Model 2537 A analyser, Tekran I

Sub-cycle ionization dynamics revealed by trajectory resolved, elliptically-driven high-order harmonic generation

The sub-cycle dynamics of electrons driven by strong laser fields is central to the emerging field of attosecond science. We demonstrate how the dynamics can be probed through high-order harmonic generation, where different trajectories leading to the same harmonic order are initiated at different times, thereby probing different field strengths. We find large differences between the trajectories

The polysemy of ‘fallacy’—or ‘bias’, for that matter

Starting with a brief overview of current usages (Sect. 2), this paper offers some constituents of a use-based analysis of ‘fallacy’, listing 16 conditions that have, for the most part implicitly, been discussed in the literature (Sect. 3). Our thesis is that at least three related conceptions of ‘fallacy’ can be identified. The 16 conditions thus serve to “carve out” a semantic core and to distin

The article argues that the digitally mediated and data-driven development stresses the need for socio-legal scrutiny. It focuses and briefly outline socio-legally relevant aspects of the “sharing” economy, that poses a number of conceptual issues on how we understand and regulate innovative platform based ventures. We focus and briefly outline socio-legally relevant aspects of the “sharing” economy, that poses a number of conceptual issues on how we understand and regulate innovative platform based ventures. This also arguably underscores a number of issues relating to the role of consumer and

Clock-gating of streaming applications for energy efficient implementations on FPGAs

The paper investigates the reduction of dynamic power for streaming applications yielded by asynchronous dataflow designs by using clock gating techniques. Streaming applications constitute a very broad class of computing algorithms in areas such as signal processing, digital media coding, cryptography, video analytics, network routing and packet processing and many others. The paper introduces a
