Entangled media histories : The value of Transnational and Transmedial Approaches in Media Historiography

The transnational and transmedial dimensions of media and communication throughout history have not always been adequately recognised. In this research report we propose the concept of entanglement as a means of better understanding the dynamic interconnectedness of media across semiotic, technological, institutional and political boundaries in history. Entanglement is a concept that can be employThe transnational and transmedial dimensions of media and communication throughout history have not always been adequately recognised. Understanding Very Old Age : Looking Back and Thinking Forward

Understanding human development among the oldest old is a sequential building process taking into account building-block data, theories, and models from childhood, adulthood, and old age toward a new territory of oldest-old survivors who have lived way beyond the average life-span. A central question is whether the oldest-old survivors have developed specific survival techniques and/or protective

Synthesizing ENABLE-AGE Research Findings to Suggest Evidence-Based Home and Health Interventions

As the quest for knowledge translation from research to practice and policy contexts is growing stronger, researchers need to develop strategies for synthesizing research findings. Since home environments constitute an important context for the delivery of health care and social services to older adults and people aging with disabilities, research in this field can serve as an example for such end

Health surveillance under adverse ergonomics conditions – validity of a screening method adapted for the occupational health service

A new health surveillance protocol for work-related upper-extremity musculoskeletal disorders has been validated by comparing the results with a reference protocol. The studied protocol, Health Surveillance in Adverse Ergonomics Conditions (HECO), is a new version of the reference protocol modified for application in the Occupational Health Service (OHS). The HECO protocol contains both a screenin

Microsieving in primary treatment : Effect of chemical dosing

Primary and chemically enhanced primary wastewater treatment with microsieving (disc or drum filtration) was studied at the large pilot scale at seven municipal wastewater treatment plants in Europe. Without chemical dosing, the reduction of suspended solids (SS) was (on average) 50% (20-65%). By introducing chemically enhanced primary treatment and dosing with cationic polymer only, SS removal co

The expanding field of cooperative initiatives for decarbonization : a review of five databases

Climate governance beyond the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)—including countries, companies, civil society, and international organizations, forming cooperative initiatives—is increasingly framed as complementing, supporting, and even substituting the multilateral negotiations. Cooperative initiatives activating nonstate actors could help bridging the ‘ambition gap’

In the wake of the economic and social crisis, Spanish fiction has looked for ways of reflecting (on) the political. One of the manners has been to attempt to understand how the crisis has affected subjectivity and, more concretely, how the subject navigates the society of the crisis. In this article, I study three recent novels—Alberto Olmos’ Ejército enemigo (2011), Bruno Galindo’s El público (2

The Gaia mission

Gaia is a cornerstone mission in the science programme of the European Space Agency (ESA). The spacecraft construction was approved in 2006, following a study in which the original interferometric concept was changed to a direct-imaging approach. Both the spacecraft and the payload were built by European industry. The involvement of the scientific community focusses on data processing for which th

Long-Time Voice Accumulation During Work, Leisure, and a Vocal Loading Task in Groups With Different Levels of Functional Voice Problems

Objective: The study aimed to examine the vocal behavior and self-assessed vocal health in women with varying everyday vocal load and functional voice problems, including patients with functional dysphonia, in three conditions: work, leisure, and a vocal loading task (VLT). Study Design: This is a longitudinal controlled, clinical trial. Methods: Fifty (n = 50) female subjects were tracked during

Spatially and spectrally resolved quantum path interference with chirped driving pulses

We measure spectrally and spatially resolved high-order harmonics generated in argon using chirped multi-cycle laser pulses. Using a stable, high-repetition rate laser we observe detailed interference structures in the far-field. The structures are of two kinds; off-axis interference from the long trajectory only and on-axis interference including the short and long trajectories. The former is rea

Fertility Patterns of Native and Migrant Muslims in Europe

This study focuses on Muslim fertility in Europe. Evidence from 25 countries suggests that the Muslim total fertility rate is on average 47% higher than the national level. However, we find a significant difference in the level of fertility of native-born Muslims and immigrant Muslims. The native-born have a 19% higher total fertility rate, while immigrants have 62% higher fertility. Our main rese

Pulse perfusion values to predict eye opening after intravenous anesthesia : An explorative study

Variables measured in modern pulse oximetry apparatuses include a graphic pulse curve and a specified perfusion value (PV) that could be a sensitive marker for detecting differences in sympathetic activity. We hypothesized that there is a correlation between a reduction of PV and the time to eye opening after anesthesia with propofol-remifentanil. This study includes 29 patients, ASA physical stat

Symbolic elimination in dynamic optimization based on block-triangular ordering

We consider dynamic optimization problems for systems described by differential-algebraic equations (DAEs). Such problems are usually solved by discretizing the full DAE. We propose techniques to symbolically eliminate many of the algebraic variables in a preprocessing step before discretization. These techniques are inspired by the causalization and tearing techniques often used when solving DAE
