Reaction kinetics and oxidation mechanisms of the conversion of pyrite to ferrous sulphate: A Mossbauer spectroscopy study
Pyrite undergoes a series of exothermic reactions during mine roasting to porous hematite. At low temperatures, the first non-refractive phase to form is ferrous sulphate and could be a cheaper alternative to hematite roasting for the mining industry. In this study, pyrite powder is heated in air at temperatures between 200 and 370 degrees C for 1 to 256 h in a temperature and time series. The rat

Flow cytometric S-phase fraction in soft-tissue sarcoma: prognostic importance analysed in 160 patients
We could determine the S-phase fraction (SPF) by flow cytometric DNA analysis of paraffin archival material in 160 of 260 patients with soft-tissue sarcoma of extremity and trunk wall. The prognostic value of SPF was compared with other clinicopathological factors. The median follow-up time was 16 (6-31) years. In a univariate analysis, deep tumour location, increasing tumour size and histological
Asymptomatic atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction: Risk modified by ability to adapt to stressful situations. Results from prospective cohort study "Men born in 1914", Malmo, Sweden
Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether different behaviors in a stressful situation modify the risk of atherosclerosis in association with a myocardial infarction, cardiovascular mortality, and all-cause mortality. Many individuals have atherosclerotic changes in their arteries but may never experience any symptoms nor develop cardiovascular disease. A myocardial infarcti

Effect of vitamin E on autolysis and sporulation of Aspergillus nidulans
The morphologic and physiologic effects of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, on the autolysis and sporulation of Aspergillus nidulans FGSC26 were studied. In carbon-depleted submerged cultures, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulated in the cells and, concomitantly, progressing autolysis was observed, which was characterized by decreasing dry cell masses and pellet diameters as well as by incre
Sulindac induces apoptosis, inhibits proliferation and activates caspase-3 in Hep G2 cells
Background: It has recently been reported that sulindac has an apoptotic effect on KYN-2 cells, an undifferentiated hepatoma cell line. The present work investigates whether sulindac also has an apoptotic effect on well-differentiated hepatoma cells and what its potential mechanism might be. Materials and Methods: Hep G2 cells were treated with sulindac at different concentrations. Apoptosis rate,
An integral equation method dealing with surface waves on large finite periodic structures
We present a method for studying large finite periodic structures using software developed for infinite periodic structures. The method is based on the Floquet-Bloch transformation, which splits the spatial description into one microscopic spatial variable inside the unit cell, and one macroscopic wave vector describing the variations on a scale encompassing many unit cells. The resulting algorith
Making and sharing the space: initiatives for story-sharing and reconciliation among women and men in South Africa and Northern Ireland
In this article I present findings from my earlier research on reconciliation in South Africa and Northern Ireland, together with some issues raised by my current research project on “reconciliation in South Africa from women’s perspectives”. Reconciliation is seen as a process whereby the diverse “moral landscapes” held in a war-torn society are addressed, with the aim of building, rebuilding or
Effect of hip flexion on the measurement of spinal bone mineral density in the Norland Eclipse XR
It is recommended that the hip joints be flexed to 90 degrees during dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scanning of the lumbar spine in the anteroposterior projection; however, some patients are unable to maintain this position because of the presence of degenerative changes in lower limb joints. This study examines the effect of a lesser degree of hip flexion on the lumbar spine bone mineral densit
Thermoseparating water/polymer system: A novel one-polymer aqueous two-phase system for protein purification
In this study we show that proteins can be partitioned and separated in a novel aqueous two-phase system composed of only one polymer in water solution. This system represents an attractive alternative to traditional two-phase systems which uses either two polymers (e.g., PEG/dextran) or one polymer in high-salt concentration (e.g., PEG/salt). The polymer in the new system is a linear random copol
Kinetics and equilibria for complex formation between palladium(II) and chloroacetate
Kinetics and equilibria for the formation of a 1:1 complex between palladium(II) and chloroacetate were studied by spectrophotometric measurements in 1.00 mol . dm(-3) HClO4 at 298.2 K. The equilibrium constant, K, of the reaction Pd2+ + HL reversible arrow PdL+ + H+ was determined from multi-wavelength absorbance measurements of equilibrated solutions at variable temperatures as log(10)K (298.2K)

Dissolved Organic Carbon Leaching from a Coniferous Forest Floor - A Field Manipulation Experiment
Leaching of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from the O layer is important for the carbon cycling of forest soils. Here we study the role of the Oi, Oe and Oa horizons in DOC leaching from the forest floor in field manipulations carried out in a Norway spruce forest stand in southern Sweden. The manipulations involved the addition and removal of litter and the removal of Oi, Oe and Oa horizons. Our

Pharyngeal constrictor paresis: an indicator of neurologic disease?
Pharyngeal constrictor paresis (PHCP) is sometimes found in videoradiography of the swallowing act in patients complaining of dysphagia. Ten patients with PHCP and 10 dysphagic, age- and sex-matched controls with normal videoradiography were neurologically evaluated and examined with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and brainstem in order to learn the pathogenetic process behind PHCP.
Mutations in the low-density lipoprotein receptor gene in Swedish familial hypercholesterolaemia patients: clinical expression and treatment response
BACKGROUND: Familial hypercholesterolaemia, an autosomal co-dominant disorder caused by defects in the low-density lipoprotein receptor gene, is strongly associated with premature development of cardiovascular disease. METHODS: In this study, we have applied a gene screening method in a population of familial hypercholesterolaemia patients in order to describe the genetic background of the disease
