Deletion of laminin-8 results in increased tumor neovascularization and metastasis in mice

Laminin-8 (alpha4beta1gamma1) is one of the major laminin isoforms expressed in vascular endothelial basement membranes. Here we show that deletion of laminin-8 in mice affects angiogenesis under pathological conditions. Murine tumor models used in laminin alpha4-deficient mice results in hyperneovascularization and significant promotion of tumor growth and metastasis. The higher tumor growth rate

HIV/AIDS knowledge and condom use among Somali and Sudanese immigrants in Denmark.

Aims: This study explores the knowledge, attitudes and practices among Somali and Sudanese immigrants in Denmark with regard to HIV/AIDS and condom use. Material and methods: A 78-item questionnaire, divided into five thematic sections, was given to 192 purposively selected Sudanese and Somalis of both sexes, aged 18-49, who had lived in Denmark for one or more years. It was administered in Arabic

Immuno-modulatory functions of CD1d-restricted natural killer T cells

NKT cells have many unique features; such as recognition of glycolipids presented by CD1d, expression of NK receptors and rapid production of large amounts of cytokines, such as IL-4 and IFN-gamma,?upon activation. This early and robust cytokine burst is believed to give NKT cells the

Experimental granulomatous alveolitis in rat. Effect of antigen manipulation, smoke exposure and route of administration

When Sephadex beads (0.45mg/kg b.w) are instilled intratracheally into rats, a granulomatous alveolitis with giant cell formation and fibrosis occurs. Moreover, the events in the alveolar region are paralleled by an eosinophil-dominated peribronchitis/bronchiolitis and perivasculitis. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) shows a very distinct feature with an early pronounced neutrophil increase, followed

Development of methods for the determination of vitamins A, E and beta-carotene in processed foods based on supercritical fluid extraction: a collaborative study.

New methodologies based on supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) have been developed for the determination of fat-soluble vitamins in processed foods. The results obtained so far indicate that SFE is well suited to extraction of fat-soluble vitamins from food products, although validation work is required to establish accuracy and precision. The vitamins investigated were A, E and beta-carotene, an

The impact of active intervention on the spread of penicillin-resistant streptococcus pneumoniae in Swedish day-care centres

Policies for handling cases of penicillin-non-susceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae (PNSP) in day-care groups vary between different counties in Sweden. The aim of this study was to evaluate the epidemiological effect of excluding PNSP-carriers from children's day-care centres (DCC). We followed the incidence in 14 DCC groups with ongoing PNSP-spread, by repeated group screens until no further case

Regulation of human neutrophil granule protein expression

The function of the mature polymorphonuclear neutrophil is dependent on its granules, each with its characteristic content of proteins. The granule proteins are formed at different stages during maturation of neutrophils from myeloblasts to segmented cells. The regulation of granule protein expression is controlled by a number of transcription factors, many of which are also essential for commitme

Light-induced linear dichroism in photoreversibly photocromic sensor pigments 6. Relation between the 2 pigments of the mycochrome system in Alternaria-Chichorii

Conidiation in A. cichorii Nattras is reversibly stimulated by near UV radiation (NUV .apprx. 313 nm) and inhibited by blue light (.apprx. 450 nm) and apparently is a mycochrome-mediated process. After induction with plane-polarized NUV, blue light polarized perpendicularly to the NUV was more effective in counteracting the induction than was blue light polarized parallel to the NUV. Both the blue

Main group atoms and dimers studied with a new relativistic ANO basis set

New basis sets of the atomic natural orbital (ANO) type have been developed for the main group and rare gas atoms. The ANO's have been obtained from the average density matrix of the ground and lowest excited states of the atom, the positive and negative ions, and the dimer at its equilibrium geometry. Scalar relativistic effects are included through the use of a Douglas-Kroll Hamiltonian. Multico

Phenotypic variation in a large Swedish pedigree due to SNCA duplication and triplication.

Background: The " Lister family complex," an extensive Swedish family with autosomal dominant Parkinson disease, was first described by Henry Mjones in 1949. On the basis of clinical, molecular, and genealogic findings on a Swedish and an American family branch, we provide genetic evidence that explains the parkinsonism in this extended pedigree. Methods: Clinical methods included a detailed neuro

Geometry and Critical Configurations of Multiple Views

This thesis is concerned with one of the core problems in computer vision, namely to reconstruct a real world scene from several images of it. The interplay between the geometry of the scene, the cameras and the images is analyzed. The framework is based on projective geometry, which is the natural language for describing the geometry of multiple views. The affine and Euclidean geometries are rega

Hydrolysis of the cubic liquid-crystalline phase of glyceryl monooleate by human pancreatic lipases

Glyceryl monooleate (GMO) and other unsaturated long-chain monoglycerides show peculiar phase behaviour characterised by the presence of one or more cubic liquid-crystalline phases. In the present study, hydrolysis of cubic lipid-water phases formed by GMO were determined. Human pancreatic carboxyl ester lipase (CEL), colipase-dependent lipase with colipase, human duodenal contents and rat pancrea

Eating difficulties, need for assisted eating, nutritional status and pressure ulcers in patients admitted for stroke rehabilitation

The aim of this study was to describe the types and extent of eating difficulties, the need for assistance when eating, the nutritional status and pressure ulcers in consecutive patients (n = 162) admitted for stroke rehabilitation over a period of 1 year. Structured observations and assessments of eating, nutritional status (subjective global assessment of nutritional status), pressure ulcers and

Simulation of Particle Morphology Development Under Kinetically Controlled Conditions

We have developed software, called UNHLATEXTM> KMORPH, for predicting particle morphology development under conditions of kinetic control. In order to accomplish this, one must first simulate the polymerization kinetics and as a result KMORPH has developed into a fairly complete model for seeded emulsion polymerization kinetics. The simulation takes into account both the aqueous phase and particle

Simulated harvesting of stream salmonids with a seasonal life history

We assessed the influence of timing of harvests on an age-structured population by altering the order of the harvest in relation to density-dependent recruitment and winter mortality. To analyze the effects of harvest timing on a general population of stream salmonids with five age-classes, we used three management strategies: no minimum size limits and two minimum size limits with increasing degr
