Transition from HCCI to PPC : Investigation of Fuel Distribution by Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF)

In a previous study, in order to investigate the effect of charge stratification on combustion behavior such as combustion efficiency and combustion phasing which also largely affects the emissions, an experiment was conducted in a heavy-duty compression ignition (CI) metal engine. The engine behavior and emission characteristics were studied in the transition from HCCI mode to PPC mode by varying

Sensorless Kinesthetic Teaching of Robotic Manipulators Assisted by Observer-Based Force Control

In modern day industry, robots are indispensable for achieving high production rates and competitiveness. In small and medium scale enterprises, where the production may shift rapidly, it is vital to be able to reprogram robots quickly. Kinesthetic teaching, also known as lead-through programming (LTP), provides a fast approach for teaching a trajectory. In this approach, a trajectory is demonstra

How bumblebees use lateral and ventral optic flow cues for position control in environments of different proximity

Flying insects frequently navigate through environments of different complexity. In this study, buff-tailed bumblebees (Bombus terrestris L.) were trained to fly along tunnels of different widths, from 60 to 240 cm. In tunnel widths of 60 and 120 cm, bumblebees control their lateral position by balancing the magnitude of translational optic flow experienced in the lateral visual field of each eye.

Planetesimal Formation by the Streaming Instability in a Photoevaporating Disk

Recent years have seen growing interest in the streaming instability as a candidate mechanism to produce planetesimals. However, these investigations have been limited to small-scale simulations. We now present the results of a global protoplanetary disk evolution model that incorporates planetesimal formation by the streaming instability, along with viscous accretion, photoevaporation by EUV, FUV

Predictors and impact of massive bleeding in acute type A aortic dissection

OBJECTIVES: Bleeding complications associated with acute type A aortic dissection (aTAAD) are a well-known clinical problem. Here, we evaluated predictors of massive bleeding related to aTAAD and associated surgery and assessed the impact of massive bleeding on complications and survival. METHODS: This retrospective study of 256 patients used Blood Conservation Using Antifibrinolytics in a Randomi

Long-term evaluation of the ambulatory geriatric assessment-a frailty intervention trial (AGE-FIT)-clinical outcomes and total costs after 36 months

Objective: To compare mortality and costs of health and social care between participants with access to care based on Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) in an out-patient care setting with a control group receiving usual care only. The comparison was done 36 months after inclusion. Methods: Randomized controlled trial. Inclusion criteria: community-dwelling, aged ≥75 years, ≥3 hospitalisatio

High-pT Jet Energy Scale Uncertainty from single hadron response with the ATLAS detector

The jet energy scale (JES) uncertainty is estimated using different methods at different pT ranges. In-situ techniques exploiting the pT balance between a jet and a reference object (e.g. Z or gamma) are used at lower pT, but at very high pT (> 2.5 TeV) there is not enough statistics for such in-situ techniques. A low JES uncertainty at high-pT is important in several searches for new phenomena, e

Ultra-low Power Design Approaches in Memories and Assist Techniques

The need for more functionality and higher performance has increased the number of transistors to billions in current processors. A high number of transistors on the same chip area increases the power density, which in turn heats up the devices and lowers the life time of batteries. The increasing demand for devices relying on battery and harvested energies in the Internet of Things (IoT) era has

Swelling and Microstructure of Nanoplatelet Systems

De laddade nanopartiklarna, även kallade lerplattor, är formade som tunna pannkaMany clay minerals consist of charged nanoplatelets that swell in an aqueous solution. The swelling and the microstructure depend on the type of clay mineral but are also dependent on, for example, the ionic composition and the temperature of the solution. The synthetic clay mineral Laponite and the natural clay mineral montmorillonite have been studied experimentally and theoretically. The swelli

FK506, an Immunosuppressive Drug, Induces Autophagy by Binding to the V-ATPase Catalytic Subunit A in Neuronal Cells

The drug FK506 (tacrolimus, fujimycin) exerts its immunosuppressive effects by regulating the nuclear factor of the activated T-cell (NFAT) family of transcription factors. However, FK506 also exhibits neuroprotective effects, but its direct target proteins that mediate these effects have not been determined. To identify the target proteins responsible for FK506's neuroprotective effects, the drug

Drivers and Barriers for Integrated Mobility Services

As more people move to cities and urban areas are growing, demand for urban transport increases. This leads not only to pressure on sustainability and climate goals, but also on the attractiveness and liveability of urban areas. Thus, it is necessary to decrease the use of private cars and create a modal shift towards more sustainable modes of transport, such as walking, cycling and public transpo

Local host specialization, host-switching, and dispersal shape the regional distributions of avian haemosporidian parasites

The drivers of regional parasite distributions are poorly understood, especially in comparison with those of free-living species. For vector-transmitted parasites, in particular, distributions might be influenced by host-switching and by parasite dispersal with primary hosts and vectors. We surveyed haemosporidian blood parasites (Plasmodium and Haemoproteus) of small land birds in eastern North A
