Identification of Step Atoms by High Resolution Core Level Spectroscopy

Vicinal Rh(111) surfaces are studied with high resolution core level photoemission. We demonstrate the possibility to distinguish between the different kinds of surface atoms on these surfaces by virtue of their 3d core level binding energies. In particular, the low coordinated step atoms are found to exhibit a clear fingerprint in Rh 3d spectra. We demonstrate how this may be used to show that in

Acanthaceae

Somalian vegetation is rich and varied, and covers one of the most arid regions of Africa. Volume 3 completes the angiosperms, and includes an index to all of the genera described in the four volumes.

Epitaxial Growth, Processing and Characterization of Semiconductor Nanostructures

This thesis deals with the growth, processing and characterization of nano-sized structures, eg., self-assembled quantum dots and nano-wires. Such structures are promising candidates for the realization of nano-scale electronic and optical devices, like for instance single electron transistors, resonant tunneling devices, and single photon emitters. For such purposes, the main focus of this work h

Absolutism, Patriotism and Publicity in Denmark-Norway in the Eighteenth Century : Jens Schielderup Sneedorff, Andreas Schytte and Frederik Sneedorff

J.S.Sneedorff joined patriotism and political theory in his treaty from 1757: "OnCivil Government". He was professor 'Juris publici et Politices' at the Academy in Sorø from 1751-1761. His successor at the Academy, Andreas Schytte, lectured during the years 1761-77 and published his political theory in eight volumes 1773-77.Together they represent a theory of monarchism and absolutism in Denmark-N

Adaptive Active Control of Machine-Tool Vibration in a Lathe - Analysis and Experiments

In the turning operation the relative dynamic motion between cutting tool and workpiece, or vibration, is a frequent problem, which affects the result of the machining, and in particular, the surface finish. Tool life is also influenced by vibration. Noise in the working environment frequently occurs as a result of dynamic motion between the cutting tool and the workpiece. The research study inclu

Foretellings of Ragnarök: World-engulfing Asymptotic Giants and the Inheritance of White Dwarfs

The search for planets around white dwarf stars, and evidence for dynamical instability around them in the form of atmospheric pollution and circumstellar disks, raises questions about the nature of planetary systems that can survive the vicissitudes of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). We study the competing effects, on planets at several AU from the star, of strong tidal forces arising from the

Effect of Cement Type, Silica Fume, Water-cement Ratio, Age and Moderate Shift in Temperature on Self-desiccation in Concrete.

This article outlines an experimental and numerical study on the effect of cement type, silica fume, w/c, age and moderate shift of temperature on self-desiccation and strength of concrete. For this purpose 81 sealed cylinders made of 9 concretes with w/c varying between 0.32 and 0.50, based on two types of Portland Cement, were manufactured. Five per cent silica fume was used in one third of the
