Overview of the biosphere-aerosol-cloud-climate interactions (BACCI) studies

Here we present research methods and results obtained by the Nordic Centre of Excellence Biosphere-Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interactions (BACCI) between 1 January 2003 and 31 December 2007. The centre formed an integrated attempt to understand multiple, but interlinked, biosphere-atmosphere interactions applying inter and multidisciplinary approaches in a coherent manner. The main objective was to st

Hållbarhetsbegreppet i kommunal planering : speciellt trafikplanering

The aim of this thesis, The Historical Novel and Historical Consciousness in ten- to twelve-year-olds - Maj Bylocks Drakskeppstrilogi in Theory and Practice, is to illustrate the possibilities for pupils of the ages between ten to twelve to develop their historical consciousness by participating in classroom work making use of fiction as a central source of knowledge. In the first part of the the

School Bullying and Power Relations in Vietnam

Taking seriously the oft-made claim that power relations are central to school bullying, the dissertation focuses specifically on the interconnectedness of school bullying and power relations within the specific context of Vietnamese lower secondary schooling. The dissertation is based on extended ethnographic fieldwork in two lower secondary schools in the north-eastern Vietnamese port city of Ha

On the Banach *-algebra crossed product associated with a topological dynamical system

Given a topological dynamical system Sigma = (X, sigma), where X is a compact Hausdorff space and a a homeomorphism of X, we introduce the Banach *-algebra crossed product l(1) (E) most naturally associated with Sigma and initiate its study. It has a richer structure than its well investigated C*-envelope, as becomes evident from the possible existence of non-self-adjoint closed ideals. We link it

Cognitive function after cardiac arrest and temperature management; rationale and description of a sub-study in the Target Temperature Management trial

Background: Mild to moderate cognitive impairment is common amongst long-term survivors of cardiac arrest. In the Target Temperature Management trial (TTM-trial) comatose survivors were randomized to 33 degrees C or 36 degrees C temperature control for 24 hours after cardiac arrest and the effects on survival and neurological outcome assessed. This protocol describes a sub-study of the TTM-trial i

Recycling of rare earths from fluorescent lamps: Value analysis of closing-the-loop under demand and supply uncertainties

Rare earth element (REE) recycling remains low at 1%, despite significant uncertainties related to future supply and demand and EU 2020 energy efficiency objectives. We use a global production network framework of REE flows from mine to REE phosphors in energy-efficient lamps to illustrate the potential of closed-loop recycling for secondary supply under different scenarios of primary supply and f

A comprehensive ovine model of blood transfusion

Background The growing awareness of transfusion-associated morbidity and mortality necessitates investigations into the underlying mechanisms. Small animals have been the dominant transfusion model but have associated limitations. This study aimed to develop a comprehensive large animal (ovine) model of transfusion encompassing: blood collection, processing and storage, compatibility testing right

Gender-based career differences among young auditors in Sweden

Purpose– The purpose of this study is to examine whether or not gender‐related differences affect the likelihood of promotion.Design/methodology/approach– The research is done on a unique dataset on the Swedish audit industry, an industry with a well‐defined and well‐known career ladder. We apply an ordered probit model to take all steps in the career ladder into consideration simultaneously.Findi

Sarmatia-Volgo-Uralia junction zone: Isotopic-geochronologic characteristic of supracrustal rocks and granitoids

The geochronologic (U-Pb isotopic system of zircons) and isotopic-geochemical (Sm-Nd isotopic system of the bulk rock) studies were performed along the profile extending from the eastern Sarmatia (in the west) to the Middle Volga megablock of Volgo-Uralia (in the east), i.e., across the entire junction zone for dating the integration of Sarmatia and Volgo-Uralia, representing two segments of the E

Evolutionary responses to environmental changes: How does competition affect adaptation?

The role and importance of ecological interactions for evolutionary responses to environmental changes is to large extent unknown. Here it is shown that interspecific competition may slow down rates of adaptation substantially and fundamentally change patterns of adaptation to long-term environmental changes. In the model investigated here, species compete for resources distributed along an ecolog

Inhomogeneous Quenching as a Limit of the Correlation Between Fluorescence Polarization and Conformation of Single Molecules

The photophysical properties of conjugated polymers (CPs) largely depend on the interactions between the CP and its environment. We present a study of two polymers with identical conjugated backbones, bare and insulated, that showed different fluorescence excitation modulation depth histograms. However, the polarization differences are not related to differences in conformation, as commonly believ

Carrier motion in as-spun and annealed P3HT:PCBM blends revealed by ultrafast optical electric field probing and Monte Carlo simulations

Charge transport dynamics in solar cell devices based on as-spun and annealed P3HT:PCBM films are compared using ultrafast time-resolved optical probing of the electric field by means of field-induced second harmonic generation. The results show that charge carriers drift about twice as far during the first 3 ns after photogeneration in a device where the active layer has been thermally annealed.

Governing Decarbonisation : The State and the New Politics of Climate Change

Popular Abstract in English The new climate politics of decarbonisation address the prospects for moving society away from its current dependence on fossil carbon energy. In this compilation dissertation, Hildingsson explores the role of the state as a critical site for progressive climate action, and examines its capacity to govern decarbonisation by transforming systems, structures and practicesThis dissertation examines the “new climate politics of decarbonisation” and the role of the state as a site for progressive climate action. This new politics concerns transformative social change aimed at moving society away from its current dependence on fossil carbon energy. A transition to low-carbon societal development hinges on restructuring and decarbonising those key systems, structures a
