Pretreatment with MK-801 or the lazaroid U-83836E does not enhance striatal graft survival
A large proportion of grafted striatal neurons die, and mechanisms by which they succumb may involve excitotoxicity and oxidative stress. We investigated the effects of pretreatment of the graft tissue with the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist (+)dizocilpine hydrogen maleate (MK-801) and lipid peroxidation inhibitor lazaroid U-83836E on the survival of transplanted striatal neurons.
Risk Factors for Heart Failure among Pan-European Childhood Cancer Survivors : A PanCareSurFup and ProCardio Cohort and Nested Case-Control Study
PURPOSE Heart failure (HF) is a potentially life-threatening complication of treatment for childhood cancer. We evaluated the risk and risk factors for HF in a large European study of long-term survivors. Little is known of the effects of low doses of treatment, which is needed to improve current treatment protocols and surveillance guidelines.METHODSThis study includes the PanCareSurFup and ProCa
Lagen delas in i A fundamental principle for healthcare in Sweden is the voluntary participation of the patient. Restrictions on the patient’s right to decide whether or not to undergo medical treatment require a legal basis in order to be legitimised. An example of such a restriction is the Act (1991:1128) on compulsory psychiatric care, LPT, which allows care and treatment without the patient’s consent. The act
Ett mål eller ett människoöde – vad rapporteras det om? : en innehållsanalys av svenska mediers rapportering från den första veckan av herrarnas fotbolls-VM i Ryssland 2018 och i Qatar 2022
This essay examines how Swedish newspapers portrayed the men's football world cup. The foundation of the study is set by researchers Lawrence Wenner & Andrew Billings and their findings that critical media coverage on sporting events is reported before it starts. The media's focus then often shifts to mainly concerning sport coverage once the event has started. The aim of this study is
Performance of [18F]RO948 PET, MRI and CSF neurofilament light in the differential diagnosis of progressive supranuclear palsy
Introduction: The diagnosis of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is often challenging since PSP may clinically resemble other neurodegenerative disorders. Recently, the tau PET tracer [18F]RO948, a potential new biomarker for PSP, was developed. The aim of this study was to determine the ability of three different biomarkers, including [18F]RO948 PET, to distinguish PSP patients from healthy co
The cranial anatomy and relationships of Cardiocorax mukulu (Plesiosauria: Elasmosauridae) from Bentiaba, Angola
We report a new specimen of the plesiosaur Cardiocorax mukulu that includes the most complete plesiosaur skull from sub-Saharan Africa. The well-preserved three-dimensional nature of the skull offers rare insight into the cranial anatomy of elasmosaurid plesiosaurians. The new specimen of Cardiocorax mukulu was recovered from Bentiaba, Namibe Province in Angola, approximately three meters above th
Membrane permeability based on mesh analysis
The main function of a membrane is to control the exchange of matter between the surrounding regions. As such, accurate modeling of membranes is important to properly describe their properties. In many cases in both biological systems and technical applications, the membranes are composite structures where transport properties may vary between the different sub-regions of the membrane. In this wor
Insights into the mechanisms of interaction between inhalable lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles and pulmonary surfactant
Pulmonary delivery of small interfering RNA (siRNA) using nanoparticle-based delivery systems is promising for local treatment of respiratory diseases. We designed dry powder inhaler formulations of siRNA-loaded lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles (LPNs) with aerosolization properties optimized for inhalation therapy. Interactions between LPNs and pulmonary surfactant (PS) determine the fate of inh
Interleukin-4 reduces insulin secretion in human islets from healthy but not type-2 diabetic donors
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is associated with low-grade inflammation. Here we investigate if the anti-inflammatorycytokine interleukin-4 (IL-4) affects glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) in human islets from nondiabetic(ND) and type-2 diabetic (T2D) donors. We first confirmed that GSIS is reduced in islets from T2Ddonors. Treatment with IL-4 for 48 h had no further effect on GSIS in these isle
Non-collaborative behaviour of accommodation businesses in the associational tourism economy
Grounded in social exchange theory (SET) this paper presents research on non-collaborative behaviour among accommodation businesses within their spatial context. The study adopts semi-structured interviews of 14 co-located accommodation businesses in Christchurch, New Zealand. The findings reveal three categories of non-collaborative factors that influence business behaviour, namely (1) resource-b
On the problem of smooth approximations in H(b) and connections to subnormal operators
For the class of de Branges-Rovnyak spaces H(b) of the unit disk D defined by extreme points b of the unit ball of H∞, we study the problem of approximation of a general function in H(b) by a function with an extension to the unit circle T of some degree of smoothness, for instance satisfying Hölder estimates or being differentiable. We will exhibit connections between this question and the theory
Viktnedgång - inte alltid den smala vägen till lycka
Monumenten i landskapet. En landskapsarkeologisk studie i Reslöv och Östra Karaby socknar med byarna Reslöv, Högestorp, Åkarp, Sibbarp och Östra Karaby
In this essay, I make a landscape archaeological analysis of the parishes of Reslöv and Östra Karaby. By studying both the visible and the hidden cultural landscape, with a focus on the Middle Ages, I identify different structures in the landscape. The starting point is the registered monuments that are documented in the Cultural Environment Register at The Swedish National Heritage Board. By loca
Calibration of a bumble bee foraging model using Approximate Bayesian Computation
1. Challenging calibration of complex models can be approached by using prior knowledge on the parameters. However, the natural choice of Bayesian inference can be computationally heavy when relying on Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling. When the likelihood of the data is intractable, alternative Bayesian methods have been proposed. Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) only requires sampli
The functional potential of methane producing and consuming microorganisms in a changing world : Den funktionella potentialen hos mikroorganismer som producerar och förbrukar metan i en föränderlig värld.
It’s clear that human activities have heated our climate via the release of anthropogenic greenhouse gases. Recent changes within the earth climate are rapid, intensifying, and unprecedented. With each additional increment of warming, climate change is impacting ecosystems through changes in average conditions, climate variability, coupled with other associated changes such as biodiversity loss an
Principles to recover copper-conducting CTR proteins for the purpose of structural and functional studies
Transition metals such as copper and zinc are essential elements required for the survival of most organisms, from bacteria to humans. Yet, elevated levels of these elements are highly toxic. The Copper TRansporter protein family (CTRs) represents the only identified copper uptake proteins in eukaryotes and hence serves as key components for the maintenance of appropriate levels of the metal. More
Predictors of suicidal ideation in adolescents five years after bariatric surgery – results from a prospective Swedish nationwide study (AMOS)
Association of metformin use and survival in patients with cutaneous melanoma and diabetes
BACKGROUND: Metformin use has been associated with improved survival in patients with different types of cancer, but research regarding the effect of metformin on cutaneous melanoma (CM) survival is sparse and inconclusive.OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between metformin use and survival among patients with CM and diabetes.METHODS: All adult patients with a primary invasive CM between
Creating the Cape Colony : The political economy of settler colonisation
This open access book offers a detailed study of the foundation and expansion of the Dutch Cape Colony to ask why certain regions in the global south became European settler societies from the 16th century onwards.Examining the different factors that led to the creation of the Cape Colony, Erik Green reveals it was a gradual process, made up of ad hoc decisions, in which the agency of indigenous p
