The role of the Baltic States, Poland and Hungary in the new Europe

The Soviet era had come to an end and by 2002 a new idea of Europe was emerging which would see the enlargement of the European Union. The period called ‘transition’ was relegated to history. It denoted the transition of the Baltic and Central European states from the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet bloc to NATO and the European Union. Originally, transition was a concept used only to denote that the f

Understanding dependencies: Why safety, security and sustainability are increasingly challenging for cities and regions

Abstract in UndeterminedThe increasing effectiveness and efficiency of modern society is not only beneficial, but also liable for new or increased vulnerabilities. The seemingly ever-increasing complexity of modern society is in other words bringing new challenges for safety, security and sustainability. At the heart of these challenges lay an incremental increase in dependencies between sectors,

Rao-Blackwellized Out-of-Sequence Processing for Mixed Linear/Nonlinear State-Space Models

We investigate the out-of-sequence measurements particle filtering problem for a set of conditionally linear Gaussian state-space models, known as mixed linear/nonlinear state-space models. Two different algorithms are proposed, which both exploit the conditionally linear substructure. The first approach is based on storing only a subset of the particles and their weights, which implies low memory

Muntlig kontinuerlig examination

Cultures of Denial : Comparing Holocaust and Armenian Genocide Denial

This thesis studies the phenomenon of modern genocide denial, focusing in particular on the Western denialist cultures surrounding the Holocaust and the Armenian genocide of 1915.While those denying, rationalizing or trivializing the Holocaust may be completely separated from those engaging in denial of the Armenian genocide, both cultures of denial have undergone similar historical phases and dev

Dynamics of Energy-Efficient Technology for Commercial Buildings in Sweden: How much can really be achieved and how fast?

This paper discusses the results of a time-dynamic analysis of the possible effects of government and utility-sponsored energy-efficiency programs on electric energy use in Swedish commercial buildings. In the study, which includes efficient lighting, improvements in ventilation, commercial cooling and cooking, we use energy scenarios to analyse how policy measures can effect future energy demand.
