Aragonite, breunnerite, calcite and dolomite in the CM carbonaceous chondrites : High fidelity recorders of progressive parent body aqueous alteration

Carbonate minerals in CM carbonaceous chondrite meteorites, along with the silicates and sulphides with which they are intergrown, provide a detailed record of the nature and evolution of parent body porosity and permeability, and the chemical composition, temperature and longevity of aqueous solutions. Fourteen meteorites were studied that range in petrologic subtype from mildly aqueously altered

The arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase activating protein gene polymorphism is associated with the risk of scleroderma-related interstitial lung disease : A multicentre European Scleroderma Trials and Research group (EUSTAR) study

Objectives. The arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase activating protein (ALOX5AP) regulates synthesis of leukotrienes (LTs), which are important mediators of inflammation and connective tissue remodelling. The aim of this study was to evaluate if single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of ALOX5AP confer risk of SSc and/ or SSc-related organ involvement. Methods. Seven SNPs of ALOX5AP (rs17222814, rs17216473

Bariatric surgery enhances splanchnic vascular responses in patients with type 2 diabetes

Bariatric surgery results in notable weight loss and alleviates hyperglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). We aimed to characterize the vascular effects of a mixedmeal and infusion of exogenous glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) in the splanchnic region in 10 obese patients with T2D before and after bariatric surgery and in 10 lean control subjects. The experiments were

Is Ross treadmill method an alternative to Åstrand cycle ergometer method?

Aims: To assess the agreement between the Ross treadmill method and the Åstrand ergometer cycle method, and the repeatability of each method. Methodology: Twenty healthy people aged 22.5 ± 2.2 years were tested on two different days, each day with both methods with a pause of 30 min between the tests. The tests were executed in the reverse order the following test day. Major findings: There was no

Verbal encoding fMRI paradigm adds complementary information to cerebral language lateralization

Title: Verbal encoding fMRI paradigm adds complementary information to cerebrallanguage lateralization.Purpose: To explore two conceptually different fMRI paradigms’ ability to lateralizelanguage. Methods: A verbal encoding paradigm and a word generation task were performed bysix patients (four right-handed) with therapy-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE),and by ten healthy individuals (five ri

Performance of algorithms that reconstruct missing transverse momentum in √s = 8 TeV proton–proton collisions in the ATLAS detector

The reconstruction and calibration algorithms used to calculate missing transverse momentum (ETmiss) with the ATLAS detector exploit energy deposits in the calorimeter and tracks reconstructed in the inner detector as well as the muon spectrometer. Various strategies are used to suppress effects arising from additional proton–proton interactions, called pileup, concurrent with the hard-scatter pro

Dating violence compared to other types of violence : Similar offenders but different victims

The aim of this study was to characterize young dating violent offenders (DVO), and to compare them to the general population and to young offenders with violent crimes directed against other victims. We have used data from the Development of Aggressive Antisocial Behaviour Study, in all 264 young men, 18 to 25 years, convicted of violent crimes and imprisoned in the Western Region of the Swedish

Audio Papers - a manifesto

With this special issue of Seismograf we are happy to present a new format of articles: Audio Papers.Audio papers resemble the regular essay or the academic text in that they deal with a certain topic of interest, but presented in the form of an audio production. The audio paper is an extension of the written paper through its specific use of media, a sonic awareness of aesthetics and materiality,

Experiences of supportive care when waiting for a lung re-transplantation

OBJECTIVES: Lung transplant patients and their next of kin share the experiences of illness but little is known in the face of a lung re-transplantation. To describe patients' and next of kin's experiences of supportive care while awaiting lung re-transplantation and the objective was to highlight a small group with special circumstances and needs.METHODS: Using qualitative content analysis, seven

Maximally restrictive leptonic texture zeros in two-Higgs-doublet models

The implementation of maximally restrictive texture zeros in the leptonic sector is investigated in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models with Majorana neutrinos. After analyzing all maximally restrictive pairs of leptonic mass matrices with zero entries, we conclude that there are only four texture combinations that are compatible with observations at 3σ confidence level and can be implemented

Action sequencing in the spontaneous swimming behavior of zebrafish larvae - implications for drug development

All motile organisms need to organize their motor output to obtain functional goals. In vertebrates, natural behaviors are generally composed of a relatively large set of motor components which in turn are combined into a rich repertoire of complex actions. It is therefore an experimental challenge to investigate the organizational principles of natural behaviors. Using the relatively simple locom

Differential inhibitory response to telcagepant on αCGRP induced vasorelaxation and intracellular Ca2+ levels in the perfused and non-perfused isolated rat middle cerebral artery

Background: Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is one of the most potent endogenous vasodilators identified to date. The present study elucidates the differential interaction of CGRP, its receptor and the effect of the CGRP-receptor antagonist telcagepant on intracellular Ca2+ -levels and tension in rat middle cerebral arteries (MCA) by pressurized arteriography, FURA-2/wire myography and immu

Reconstruction of primary vertices at the ATLAS experiment in Run 1 proton–proton collisions at the LHC

This paper presents the method and performance of primary vertex reconstruction in proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment during Run 1 of the LHC. The studies presented focus on data taken during 2012 at a centre-of-mass energy of s=8 TeV. The performance has been measured as a function of the number of interactions per bunch crossing over a wide range, from one to seventy.

Immune response to pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in patients with systemic vasculitis receiving standard of care therapy

Aim: To study the effect of standard of care therapy on antibody response and functionality following immunization with 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) in patients with primary systemic vasculitis compared to healthy controls. Methods: 49 patients with vasculitis and 49 controls received a single dose (0.5. ml) PCV13 intramuscularly. Ongoing treatments: azathioprine (AZA; n = 11),
