Applying the ASM3 model for evaluation of control strategies for a biological nitrogen removal wastewater treatment plant
Biological nutrient removal processes for municipal wastewaters have received quite some attention during the past decades, especially due to the introduction of stricter legislation with respect to allowable effluent pollutant discharge limits. The necessity for performance improvement of existing activated sludge wastewater treatment plants (ASWWTPs) has created a need for detailed process model

Auch wenn kostbare Zeit verschenkt wurde, die Konferenz hinterlässt keinen reinen Scherbenhaufen, sondern einen klaren Auftrag, die Interessen der ärmsten Länder stärker zu berücksichtigen. Purification and characterization of a beta-lactamase from Haemophilus ducreyi in Escherichia coli
A pCb plasmid encoding a beta-lactamase from Haemophilus ducreyi was transferred to Escherichia coli, purified, and characterized. The beta-lactamase could be isolated from a culture filtrate and further purified by ammonium sulfate and chelating Sepharose fast flow loaded with Zn(2+). The purified enzyme resulted in a major band at approximately 30-kDa on SDS-PAGE and its pI was determined to be
Engineering direct fructose production in processed potato tubers by expressing a bifunctional alpha-amylase/glucose isomerase gene complex
Manipulation of starch biosynthesis/degradation and formation of novel molecules in storage organs of plants through genetic engineering is an attractive but technically challenging goal. We report here, for the first time, that starch was degraded and glucose and fructose were produced directly when crushed potato tubers expressing a starch degrading bifunctional gene were heated for 45 minutes a

Conceptions in the Code : How Metaphors Explain Legal Challenges in Digital Times
Stefan Larsson’s Conceptions in the Code makes a significant contribution to sociolegal analysis and also represents a valuable contribution to conceptual metaphor theory. By utilising the case of copyright in a digital context it explains the role that metaphor plays when the law is dealing with technological change, displaying both conceptual path-dependence as well as what is called non-legislaStefan Larsson's Conceptions in the Code contributes invaluably to socio-legal analysis and conceptual metaphor theory. By examining cases of digital copyright, Larsson elucidates the role that metaphor plays when law is accommodating technological change, displaying both conceptual path-dependence as well as non-legislative developments in law. Analyses draw from conceptual studies of property sp
Emerging roles of the myocardin family of proteins in lipid and glucose metabolism
Members of the myocardin family bind to the transcription factor serum response factor (SRF) and act as coactivators controlling genes of relevance for myogenic differentiation and motile function. Binding of SRF to DNA is mediated by genetic elements called CArG boxes, found often but not exclusively in muscle and growth controlling genes. Studies aimed at defining the full spectrum of these CArG
Transcription Factor 7 Limits Regulatory T Cell Generation in the Thymus
Regulatory T cells (Tregs) differentiate in the thymus, but the mechanisms that control this process are not fully understood. We generated a comprehensive quantitative and differential proteome of murine Tregs and conventional T cells. We identified 5225 proteins, 164 of which were differentially expressed in Tregs. Together with the comparative analysis of proteome and gene expression data, we i

Mouse monoclonal antibodies against outer membrane proteins of a vaccine strain of Neisseria meningitidis B : 4:P1.15
Background. Neisseria meningitidis (Nm) is a Gram negative diplococcus causing bacterial meningitis and fulminant septicemia. In order to allow efficient characterization of infecting strains, antibody reagents for use as analytical tools have proven to be invaluable tools. Similarly, antibodies against relevant bacterial antigens may guide in the selection of components to be included in developi
Pharmacokinetics of carbetocin, a long-acting oxytocin analogue, in nonpregnant women
The safety and pharmacokinetics of carbetocin, a long-acting oxytocin analogue, were studied in 25 healthy nonpregnant women. The distribution and elimination half-lives of a 0.4-mg intravenous dose were found to be 5.5 ± 1.6 minutes and 41 ± 11.9 minutes, respectively. Similarly, the half-lives of a 0.8-mg intravenous dose were found to be 6.1 ± 1.2 minutes and 42.7 ± 10.6 minutes. Approximately

Metal-binding proteins and peptides in bioremediation and phytoremediation of heavy metals
The expression of metal-binding proteins or peptides in microorganisms and plants in order to enhance heavy metal accumulation and/or tolerance has great potential. Several different peptides and proteins have been explored. This review focuses on cadmium (Cd) because of the significant importance of this metal and because of its global presence in many food materials.
