Noncompetitive antagonism of BIBN4096BS on CGRP-induced responses in human subcutaneous arteries
1 We investigated the antagonistic effect of 1-piperidinecarboxamide, N-[2-[[5amino-1-[[4-(4-pyridinyl)-1-piperazinyl]carbonyl]pentyl]amino]-1 -[(3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxyphenyl)methyl]-2-oxoethyl]4-(1,4- dihydro-2-oxo-3(2H)-quinazolinyl) (BIBN4096BS) on the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-induced responses by using isometric myograph and FURA-2 technique in human subcutaneous arteries removed
Bed agglomeration problems in fluidized-bed biomass combustion
Bed material agglomeration was studied experimentally in a fluidized-bed biomass combustor, Four biomass fuels, four bed materials, three bed additives, and three NOx additives were tested in a temperature range of 670-870 degreesC and at two pressure levels of 1.0 and 1.5 MPa. Two types of agglomeration were observed, a homogeneous and a heterogeneous type. The first occurred at low temperature a
Rheumatoid arthritis, gold therapy, contact allergy and blood cytokines.
Objective To study the clinical and biochemical effects of a low starting dose for gold therapy in rheumatoid arthritis patients with a contact allergy to gold. Methods Serum cytokines were assayed before and 24 h after the first injection of gold sodium thiomalate (GSTM). Results Contact allergy to gold was found in 4 of 19 patients. Compared to gold-negative patients (starting dose: 10 mg GST
Self-concept and introversion in adolescents with cleft lip and palate.
The purpose of this study was to investigate if adolescents with cleft lip, or palate, or both (CLP), have an altered self-concept, and to assess their degree of introversion, compared with a control group. The CLP group consisted of 55 adolescents (aged 17-20 years) and the control group consisted of 31 adolescents (16-19 years). The Tennessee Self Concept Scale (TSCS) was used to measure the sub
Interstitial carbon-oxygen center and hydrogen related shallow thermal donors in Si
The interstitial carbon-oxygen defect is a prominent defect formed in e-irradiated Cz-Si containing carbon. Previous stress alignment investigations have shown that the oxygen atom weakly perturb the carbon interstitial but the lack of a high-frequency oxygen mode has been taken to imply that the oxygen atom is severely affected and becomes overcoordinated. Local vibrational mode spectroscopy and

Gender differences in asthma prevalence may depend on how asthma is defined
BACKGROUND: Asthma may be defined either as wheeze within the previous 12 months (current wheeze) doctor-diagnosed asthma (DDA), or current wheeze plus confirmed airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR). AIMS: We wanted to estimate asthma prevalence in randomly selected adolescents based on different criteria for asthma diagnosis, study gender differences in reported asthma-like symptoms vs DDA, and relat

Aggregation effects on anhydrobiotic survival in the tardigrade Richtersius coronifer
For anhydrobiotic metazoans the rate of desiccation is an important factor influencing the probability of survival in a dry anhydrobiotic state. Formation of animal aggregations, in which the exposed body surface area of individual animals is reduced, represents one way to reduce the rate of evaporation. Such aggregations have earlier been documented in e.g., nematodes. We experimentally evaluate

Substrate and product dependence of force and shortening in fast and slow smooth muscle
To explore the molecular mechanisms responsible for the variation in smooth muscle contractile kinetics, the influence of MgATP, MgADP, and inorganic phosphate (P(i)) on force and shortening velocity in thiophosphorylated "fast" (taenia coli: maximal shortening velocity Vmax = 0.11 ML/s) and "slow" (aorta: Vmax = 0.015 ML/s) smooth muscle from the guinea pig were compared. P(i) inhibited active fo

Enhanced surface sensitivity in AES relative to XPS observed in free argon clusters
The surface-to-bulk intensity ratio in Auger electron spectra has been studied in comparison with core-level photoelectron spectra using free argon clusters of sizes ranging over two orders of magnitude. Enhanced surface sensitivity is observed in L2,3M2,3M2.3 Auger electron spectra compared to 2p photoelectron spectra where electrons of similar kinetic energies were recorded. This is discussed in
