From contamination to infective endocarditis—a population-based retrospective study of Corynebacterium isolated from blood cultures

Corynebacterium is a genus that can contaminate blood cultures and also cause severe infections like infective endocarditis (IE). Our purpose was to investigate microbiological and clinical features associated with contamination and true infection. A retrospective population-based study of Corynebacterium bacteremia 2012–2017 in southern Sweden was performed. Corynebacterium isolates were species

Impact of effective polarisability models on the near-field interaction of dissolved greenhouse gases at ice and air interfaces

We present a theory for Casimir-Polder forces acting on greenhouse gas molecules dissolved in a thin water film. Such a nano-sized film has been predicted to arise on the surface of melting ice as stabilized by repulsive Lifshitz forces. We show that different models for the effective polarisability of greenhouse gas molecules in water lead to different predictions for how Casimir-Polder forces in

Identification of novel selective V2 receptor non-peptide agonists

Peptides with agonist activity at the vasopressin V2 receptor are used clinically to treat fluid homeostasis disorders such as polyuria and central diabetes insipidus. Of these peptides, the most commonly used is desmopressin, which displays poor bioavailability as well as potent activity at the V1b receptor, with possible stress-related adverse effects. Thus, there is a strong need for the develo

Microwave-assisted solvent-free parallel synthesis of thioamides

Rapid parallel synthesis of thioamides is described. A library of amides, synthesised by mixing acyl chlorides and diamines, was transformed into the corresponding thioamides utilising Lawesson's reagent as the oxygen/sulphur exchange reagent. Purification by solid-phase extraction afforded the library members in adequate purities and yields. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Discovery of potential antipsychotic agents possessing pro-cognitive properties

Current antipsychotic drug therapies for schizophrenia have limited efficacy and are notably ineffective at addressing the cognitive deficits associated with this disorder. The present study was designed to develop effective antipsychotic agents that would also ameliorate the cognitive deficits associated with this disease. In vitro studies comprised of binding and functional assays were utilized

Overview and status of diagnostics for the ESS project

The European Spallation Source, now under construction in Lund, Sweden, aims to be the world's most powerful pulsed neutron scattering facility. Driving the neutron source is a 5 MW superconducting proton linear accelerator operating at 4 percent beam duty factor and 14 Hz repetition rate. Nineteen partner institutions from across Europe are working with the Accelerator Division in Lund to design

Subcellular localization of neuronal nitric oxide synthase in the brain of a teleost; an immunoelectron and confocal microscopical study

The subcellular localization of neuronal nitric oxide (NO) synthase (NOS)-immunoreactive (NOSir) elements in the brain of the Atlantic salmon was investigated by means of electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. NOSir structures are present only in neuronal elements. In neuronal processes, strong NOS immunoreactivity was mainly localized within synaptic vesicles or seen as a den

Central neural connections of the pineal organ and retina in the teleost Gasterosteus aculeatus L.

The relations of the central neural connections of the pineal organ to those of the retinae of the lateral eyes were investigated in the three‐spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus L. (Teleostei), by anterograde and retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). HRP was applied to the crushed pineal stalk and/or injected into the left or the right eye. Both pineal and retinal efferents

Music education in times of trouble

EU policy documents on the effects of the global migration wave suggest that culture has an important role in promoting inclusion as well as developing and maintaining democracy. These expectations on culture places music education as a potential key factor in coping with the effects of the current refugee situation. In this paper, it is argued that European music educational systems are given a t

High-definition spatial transcriptomics for in situ tissue profiling

Spatial and molecular characteristics determine tissue function, yet high-resolution methods to capture both concurrently are lacking. Here, we developed high-definition spatial transcriptomics, which captures RNA from histological tissue sections on a dense, spatially barcoded bead array. Each experiment recovers several hundred thousand transcript-coupled spatial barcodes at 2-μm resolution, as

Företags försvar vid anklagelser om brott – betydelsen av den nordiska kontexten

In recent years, several Swedish companies have been accused in the media, by NGOs, and via legal proceedings of engaging in criminal activities. Two of these companies, TeliaSonera and Lundin Petroleum have been the focus of substantial public attention. During the years following the revelations that TeliaSonera, a partly state owned telecommunications company, had committed bribery offences in

Sex differences in predictors of cognitive and functional outcomes in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

Background: About two-thirds of patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are women, mostly because of their longer life-span and the higher prevalence of AD among older persons. A more-pronounced association between AD pathology and dementia (faster brain atrophy) and more-rapid cognitive decline have been reported in women. The AD prognosis might be affected by, e.g., size of cerebral hemispheres,

High-density scalp EEG data acquired in an inattentional blindness paradigm with background Gestalt stimuli

Behavioral and electroencephalography (EEG) data were analyzed from 30 participants performing a demanding, attention-capturing task in which they had to detect an occasional decrement of luminance of small discs. Crucially, numerous white segments in the background were presented either in random orientations or configuring a contour shape of a square or a diamond. The participants' awareness of

Doing the rite thing

Density-dependent offspring interactions do not explain macroevolutionary scaling of adult size and offspring size

Most life forms exhibit a correlated evolution of adult size (AS) and size at independence (SI), giving rise to AS–SI scaling relationships. Theory suggests that scaling arises because relatively large adults have relatively high reproductive output, resulting in strong density-dependent competition in early life, where large size at independence provides a competitive advantage to juveniles. The

Patients’ experiences of using the Integrated Palliative care Outcome Scale for a person-centered care : A qualitative study in the specialized palliative home-care context

The aim of this study was to explore patients’ experiences of using the Integrated Palliative care Outcome Scale (IPOS) during specialized palliative home care. The study adopted a qualitative approach with an interpretive descriptive design. Interviews were performed with 10 patients, of whom a majority were diagnosed with incurable cancer. Our findings suggest that the use of IPOS as a basis for

Explaining the measurement and evaluation stasis : A thought experiment and a note on functional stupidity

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explain the “evaluation deadlock” or “stasis” diagnosed by many authors. The explanation relies on a thought experiment. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is conceptual and builds on a thought experiment inspired by qualitative research such as interviews with communication consultants in Sweden. It makes use of principal–agent theory and Akerlof’s the
