The Generalized Hill Model: A Kinematic Approach Towards Active Muscle Contraction.

Excitation-contraction coupling is the physiological process of converting an electrical stimulus into a mechanical response. In muscle, the electrical stimulus is an action potential and the mechanical response is active contraction. The classical Hill model characterizes muscle contraction though one contractile element, activated by electrical excitation, and two non-linear springs, one in seri

Formal Subdivision of the Holocene Series/Epoch

This proposal, by a Working Group of Integration of ice-core, marine, and terrestrial records (INTIMATE) and the Subcommission on Quaternary Stratigraphy (SQS) of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS), is for a formal subdivision of the Holocene Series/Epoch. Although previous attempts to subdivide the Holocene have proved inconclusive, recent developments in Quaternary stratigraphy,

The G protein-coupled receptor GPR30 signalosome - A novel G protein-independent mechanism regulating cAMP signaling and receptor trafficking

The fact that GPCRs are involved in essentially every physiological event, and that ~50% of drugs on the current market are either directly or indirectly targeted towards the function of GPCRs, we can be certa

Subspace-Based Estimation of Symbolic Periodicities

In this work, we propose a novel subspace-based estimator of periodicities in symbolic sequences. The estimator exploits the harmonic structure naturally occurring in symbolic se- quences and iteratively forms the estimate of the periodicities using a MUSIC-like formulation. The estimator allows for alphabets of different sizes, but is here illustrated using both simulated and real DNA measurement

Chiral diphosphine derivatives of alkylidyne tricobalt carbonyl clusters - A comparative study of different cobalt carbonyl (pre)catalysts for (asymmetric) intermolecular Pauson-Khand reactions

Reaction of the tricobalt carbyne cluster [Co-3(mu(3)-CH)(CO)(9)] with chiral diphosphines of the Josiphos and Walphos families affords the new clusters [Co-3(mu(3)-CH)(CO)(7)(P-P*)] in good yield (P-P* = J004 (1), J005 (2), J007 (3), W001 (4), W003 (5)). The new alkylidyne tricobalt clusters, and the previously known [Co-3(mu(3)-CH)(CO)(7)(mu-J003)], have been tested as catalysts/catalyst precurs

Measurement of W gamma and Z gamma production cross sections in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV and limits on anomalous triple gauge couplings with the ATLAS detector

This Letter presents measurements of l(+/-) nu gamma and l(+)l(-)gamma (l = e.mu) production in 1.02 fb(-1) of pp collision data recorded at root s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in the first half of 2011. Events dominated by W gamma and Z gamma production with leptonic decays of the W and Z bosons are selected, and their production cross sections and kinematic properties are measured

Record low beta beating in the LHC

The LHC is currently operating with a proton energy of 4 TeVand beta* functions at the ATLAS and CMS interaction points of 0.6 m. This is close to the design value at 7 TeV ( beta* = 0.55 m) and represented a challenge for various aspects of the machine operation. In particular, a huge effort was put into the optics commissioning and an unprecedented peak beta beating of around 7% was achieved in

High-speed structured planar laser illumination for contrast improvement of two-phase flow images

A high-speed method to remove blurring effects caused by multiple scattering in planar laser images of two-phase flows is demonstrated. The technique is based on structured illumination and is for the first time to our knowledge applied on a dynamic medium. As structured illumination requires three successive images to be recorded and to freeze the flow motion in time, a high-speed laser and imagi

Adaptigation

This article integrates the concepts and notions of climate change adaptation and mitigation in order to formulate the concept of adaptigation as a heuristic strategy for political and professional response to climate change in planning and other realms of climate change response for synergies and efficiencies.

Detection of a typical arson fire scenario – comparison between experiments and simulations

Abstract in UndeterminedBetween one and two school fires occur in Sweden every day. In most cases, arson is the cause of the fire. The most severe fires generally start outside the building and spread up along the façade and into the attic through ventilation openings in the eaves. Linear heat detectors can be placed on façades to detect these types of fires. Such devices detect fire when short-ci

Impact of maternal characteristics on fetal growth in the third trimester: a population-based study

Objectives. To investigate the association between maternal characteristics and fetal growth during the third trimester of pregnancy. Methods. Using a population-based perinatal register, 48,809 term singleton pregnancies were identified for which a routine ultrasound examination in the third trimester was performed between 1995 and 2009. Fetal and infant weight, respectively, were expressed as ge

Contrasting patterns of allochthony among three major groups of crustacean zooplankton in boreal and temperate lakes

The importance of terrestrial-derived organic matter for lake zooplankton communities remains debated, partly because little is known about the basic pathways by which allochthonous carbon is transferred to zooplankton, and whether these vary among the major taxonomic and functional groups. We quantified allochthony of three zooplankton groups (Cladocera, Calanoida, and Cyclopoida) across 18 lakes

Psychometric properties of four fear of falling rating scales in people with Parkinson's disease.

Fear of falling (FOF) is commonly experienced in people with Parkinson's disease (PD). It is a predictor of recurrent falls, a barrier to physical exercise, and negatively associated with health-related quality of life. A variety of rating scales exist that assess different aspects of FOF but comprehensive head-to-head comparisons of their psychometric properties in people with PD are lacking. The

Laminar burning velocity of lean H-2-CO mixtures at elevated pressure using the heat flux method

Laminar burning velocity measurements of 50:50 and 85:15% (by volume) H-2-CO mixtures with O-2-N-2 and O-2-He oxidizers were performed at lean conditions (equivalence ratio from 0.5 to 1) and elevated pressures (1 atm-9 atm). The heat flux method (HFM) is employed for determining the laminar burning velocity of the fuel-oxidizer mixtures. HFM creates a one-dimensional adiabatic stretchless flame w

Conceptual design report for a Beta-Beam facility

The Beta-Beam is a concept of large-scale facility that aims at providing pure electronic neutrino and antineutrino beams for the measurement of v(e) -> v(mu) oscillations. Beta-decaying nuclides are produced in large amounts in a facility of the scale of EURISOL, and are then post-accelerated and stored at large gamma in a racetrack decay ring. We present here a conceptual design of the accelerat

The European postmarketing adult Osteosarcoma Surveillance Study: characteristics of patients A preliminary report

The Scandinavian Sarcoma Group (SSG) registry participates in a multinational postmarketing drug surveillance study evaluating potential medication exposures (including teriparatide) in a population-based series of adult osteosarcoma cases. We present preliminary data from this study. The SSG registry systematically identifies eligible cases in collaboration with regional and national cancer regis
