Ocular and scleral alterations in gene-targeted lumican-fibromodulin double-null mice.

PURPOSE: To elucidate the role of leucine-rich proteoglycans lumican and fibromodulin in the sclera. METHODS: Lumican- and fibromodulin-null heterozygous mice were intercrossed to obtain wild-type (Lum(+/+)Fmod(+/+)), lumican-null (Lum(-/-)Fmod(+/+)), fibromodulin-null (Lum(+/+)Fmod(-/-)), and double-null (Lum(-/-)Fmod(-/-)) littermates. Axial length was measured on enucleated whole eyes, and ocul

Climatic control of the high-latitude vegetation greening trend and Pinatubo effect

A biogeochemical model of vegetation using observed climate data predicts the high northern latitude greening trend over the past two decades observed by satellites and a marked setback in this trend after the Mount Pinatubo, volcano eruption in 1991. The observed trend toward earlier spring budburst and increased maximum leaf area is produced by the model as a consequence of biogeochemical vegeta

Neuroprotective and behavioral efficacy of nerve growth factor-transfected hippocampal progenitor cell transplants after experimental traumatic brain injury

OBJECT: Immortalized neural progenitor cells derived from embryonic rat hippocampus (HiB5), were transduced ex vivo with the gene for mouse nerve growth factor (NGF) to secrete NGF (NGF-HiB5) at 2 ng/hr/10(5) cells in culture. METHODS: Fifty-nine male Wistar rats weighing 300 to 370 g each were anesthetized with 60 mg/kg sodium pentobarbital and subjected to lateral fluid-percussion brain injury o

Simultaneous enzymatic wheat starch saccharification and fermentation to lactic acid by Lactococcus lactis

Simultaneous saccharification of starch from whole-wheat flour and fermentation to lactic acid (SSF) was investigated. For saccharification the commercial enzyme mixture SAN Super 240 L, having alpha-amylase, amyloglucosidase and protease activity, was used, and Lactococcus lactis ssp. lactis ATCC 19435 was used for the fermentation. SSF was studied at flour concentrations corresponding to starch

Genetic Effects on Women's Positive Mental Health: Do Marital Relationships and Social Support Matter?

Interpersonal relationships are important factors in mental health. A genetically sensitive design was used to examine associations among marital quality, adequacy of social support, and 2 aspects of positive mental health in a sample of 652 Swedish twin women and their families. There were 3 main findings. First, the covariance between relationships and positive mental health was partially accoun

Molecular dynamics simulation of the effects of cytosine methylation on structure of oligonucleotides

Methylation of the cytosine bases in CpG dinucleotides of DNA is important in many cellular functions including gene regulation, chromosome inactivation, as well as in cancer and other diseases. In this report we investigate the structural effects of methylation of cytosines in CpG sites. Hereditary diseases are frequently caused by mutations in CpG dinucleotides. Aqueous solution molecular dynami

Avhandling innehåller en översikt över icke-feministiska och feministiska teorier och filosofier om omsorg samt en empirisk undersökning av uppfattningar om omsorg och omsorgshandlingar i fyra yrkesgrupper: fastighetsansvariga, kvarterspoliser, distriktssjukskötersThe aim of this study was to investigate care as concept and action and to see how care can be expressed in different conditions. The dissertation contains a survey of non-feminist and feminist theories of care and an empirical study of views of care and caring acts in four professional groups: janitors, neighbourhood police, district nurses, and home-helpers. The study, which is based on intervie

LEPREL1, a novel ER and Golgi resident member of the Leprecan family.

We have identified a novel protein, Leprecan-like 1 (LEPREL1), with profound similarity to the Leprecan family of proteoglycans. The genomic organization of the Leprecan gene family was found to be highly conserved. Expression analysis shows that LEPREL1 is expressed in most tissues as a 3.4 kb transcript encoding an 80 kDa protein. A LEPREL1 specific antibody stains many cell types including adip

Left atrioventricular plane displacement determined by echocardiography: a clinically useful, independent predictor of mortality in patients with stable coronary artery disease

Background. Echocardiographically determined left atrioventricular plane displacement (AVPD) is strongly related to prognosis in patients with chronic heart failure and in postmyocardial infarction patients. We aimed at exploring whether AVPD, unlike ejection fraction, is related to mortality in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods and results. Atrioventricular plane displac
