Familial risks for epilepsy among siblings based on hospitalizations in Sweden

PURPOSE: Epilepsy is a common disabling condition, with high heritability according to twin studies. Characterization of familial risks for common subtypes of epilepsy will advance the search for the heritable causes of these conditions and their underlying mechanisms. We aim at defining familial risks for siblings to be hospitalized because of epilepsy.METHODS: A nationwide ad hoc epilepsy databa

Familial risks for diseases of myoneural junction and muscle in siblings based on hospitalizations and deaths in sweden

Diseases of the myoneural junction and muscle are disabling and some are life-threatening. Recent successes in the identification of the underlying genetic mechanisms have had profound implication for their diagnostics, treatment and classification. We define familial risks for siblings who were hospitalized for or deceased from diseases of the myoneural junction and muscle. A nationwide database

Multi-objective optimization of fenestration design in residential spaces – The case of MKB Greenhouse, Malmö, Sweden : Abstract and oral presentation

This work presented and optimization scheme for daylighting, heating and thermal comfort objectives in a highly insulated apartment, while varying different geometrical aspects of external windows (number, shape, size, position). To satisfy all objectives simultaneously, a large number of design iterations was evaluated by the use of the SPEA2 genetic algorithm as it is implemented on the Octopus

Incidence of multiple primary malignancies among patients with bone cancers in Sweden

Purpose: The present study aimed at quantifying risks for second malignancies in patients with bone cancers, and risks for second bone cancers after other primary tumors. Methods: Adjusted standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were used as a measure of risk. Results: Among 2,546 primary bone cancer patients, a total of 171-second malignancies occurred. Besides second bone cancers, other cancer site

Occupation and bladder cancer : A cohort study in Sweden

In a follow-up study of occupational exposures and bladder cancer, an increased risk was observed after an adjustment for smoking, for physicians, administrators and managers, clerical workers and sales agents among men and assistant nurses among women. For physicians, the reason may be early diagnosis; for the other groups a sedentary type of work may have a role in bladder cancer aetiology.

Familial risks for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease among siblings based on hospitalisations in Sweden

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive disabling condition, for which tobacco smoking, environmental pollution, inherited alpha-antitrypsin deficiency and their interactions are predisposing factors. We carried out a family study on COPD in order to address the role of heritable and environmental risk factors at a population level.METHODS: In a nationwide study o

Pain and health status in adults with myelomeningocele living in Sweden

PURPOSE: To increase knowledge about pain and general health in adults with myelomeningocele, a health condition with several risk factors for pain such as musculoskeletal deformities, shunt dysfunctions, bowel problems, and urinary tract infections/stones. METHODS: Descriptive correlational pilot study (N= 51, 53% males). Chi-square tests were used to test associations among presence, impact, sev
