Association between findings on delayed gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of cartilage and future knee osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the predictive value of the delayed gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of cartilage (dGEMRIC) index with regard to future radiographic osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS: In 1998, 17 knees in 11 men and 4 women with knee pain, normal results of weight-bearing radiography, and arthroscopic cartilage changes ranging from superficial fibrillation to fissuring and softening

The race for real-time photorealism

Since the 1960s, product designers, architects, lighting planners, gamers and scientific visualizaiton specialists have craved the ability to work in real-time three-dimensional photorealistic virtual worlds. The authors, one specializing in making computer graphics more convincing and the other focusing on making them faster, present the achievements and challenges in the race for real-time photo

The tyrosine sulfate rich domains of the LRR-proteins fibromodulin and osteoadherin bind motifs of basic clusters in a variety of heparin binding proteins including bioactive factors.

The small leucine-rich repeat proteins (SLRPs), fibromodulin and osteoadherin, have N-terminal extensions with a variable number of O-sulfated tyrosine residues. This modification combined with a number of aspartic and glutamic acid residues results in a highly negatively charged domain of less than 30 amino acids. We hypothesized that this domain shares functional properties with heparin regardin

Neuron specific enolase and S-100B as predictors of outcome after cardiac arrest and induced hypothermia.

AIM: To assess the prognostic value of repetitive serum samples of neuron specific enolase (NSE) and S-100B in cardiac arrest patients treated with hypothermia. METHODS: In a three-centre study, comatose patients after cardiac arrest were treated with hypothermia at 33 degrees C for 24h, regardless of cause or the initial rhythm. Serum samples were collected at 2, 24, 48 and 72h after the arrest a

Tumor-specific HMG-CoA reductase expression in primary premenopausal breast cancer predicts response to tamoxifen.

ABSTRACT: INTRODUCTION: We previously reported an association between tumor-specific 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutharyl-coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoAR) expression and a good prognosis in breast cancer. Here, the predictive value of HMG-CoAR expression in relation to tamoxifen response was examined. METHODS: HMG-CoAR protein and RNA expression was analyzed in a cell line model of tamoxifen resistance usin

Activated Protein C-Protein C Inhibitor Complex, Activation Peptide of Carboxypeptidase B and C-Reactive Protein as Predictors of Severe Acute Pancreatitis.

Introduction: The concentration of carboxypeptidase B activation peptide (CAPAP) is proposed to be a predictor of severe acute pancreatitis. The activated protein C (APC)-protein C inhibitor (PCI; APC-PCI) complex in plasma could be useful in detecting the hypercoagulative condition in severe acute pancreatitis. Method: In this prospective study, mild (n = 50) and severe (n = 9) cases of acute pan

Increased Energy Efficiency and the Rebound Effect: Effects on Consumption and Emissions

The main objective of this paper is to examine how exogenous technological progress, in terms of an increase in energy efficiency, affects consumption choice by Swedish households and thereby emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx). The aim of the paper is closely related to the discussion of what is termed the “rebound effect”. Evaluation of exposure biomarkers from percutaneous absorption of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate different biomarkers of exposure to N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), a widely used industrial chemical. For this purpose, differences in toxicokinetics between men and women and between pure and water-mixed NMP were evaluated after dermal absorption. METHODS: Six female and six male volunteers (groups 1 and 2) were topically exposed for 6 hours to 300

Expression of Serotonin Receptors 5-HT1A, 5-HT1B, 5-HT2B and 5-HT4 in Ovary and in Ovarian Tumours.

BACKGROUND: Recently we have shown that serotonin receptors may be involved in prostate cancer development. In ovarian carcinogenesis, oestrogen may play a role. As oestrogen seems to mediate at least some of its biological effects through serotonin, we decided to evaluate if serotonin receptors are expressed in ovary and in ovarian tumours and if the expression is correlated to ovarian tumour dev

Purification of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) binding proteoglycan betaglycan

We report the purification of betaglycan, a low-abundance membrane proteoglycan with high affinity for transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta). Betaglycan solubilized from rat embryo membrane preparations was purified to near-homogeneity by sequential chromatography through DEAE-Trisacryl, wheat germ lectin-Sepharose, and TGF-beta 1-agarose. Purified betaglycan has properties similar to betagly

Thermopower anomaly in multiple barrier structures

We have predicted that in suitable multiple barrier structures without applied bias, the thermopower may change sign because of quantum transport process. We have performed detailed numerical calculation to show that the predicted thermopower anomaly can be experimentally observed. This thermopower anomaly does not violate thermodynamic laws.

Some Integral Formulas for Fatigue Damage in Variable Amplitude Loading

In this paper some integral formulas for the fatigue damage in variable amplitude loading are presented. The formulas, which in their original form appeared in Rychlik (1993), may be used for both the theoretical analysis of the fatigue damage, resulting from different cycle counting algorithms, as well as for the computation of different statistical properties of the fatigue damage.
