Atomic mercury flux monitoring using an optical parametric oscillator based lidar system
A newly developed optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based differential absorption lidar (DIAL) system has been applied to the monitoring of atomic mercury emissions at several chlor-alkali plants in Europe. The versatility of the system is illustrated by measured time series of mercury flux and movies of vertical and horizontal concentration distributions, which yield important input parameters
Hälsa är att leva: En teoretisk och empirisk analys av begreppet hälsa med exempel från geriatrisk omvårdnad
This dissertation deals with the concept of health in relation to the subject "Nursing" (Omvårdnad). "Nursing"is the principal subject in nursing education in Sweden today and can be translated both as "nursing" and as "caring". The aim of the dissertation is to survey, describe and analyse the theoretical concept of health and to provide examples of nursing activities that enhance/hinder health.
Supercritical fluid extraction and chromatography for fat-soluble vitamin analysis.
Extraction and chromatographic separation of fat-soluble vitamins is a challenging task, due to the sensitivity of these compounds towards light, oxygen, heat and pH. In light of this, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) are attractive techniques as they function at considerably milder conditions than conventional solvent-based analytical techniques. M
Light propagation in biological materials and natural waters
Methods for modelling the behaviour of light in materials which not only absorb, but also scatter light are reviewed, with special emphasis on the Monte Carlo method and Kubelka-Munk theory as applied to biological samples. Two methods for checking model performance are also described, namely determination of photon transit times and fiberoptic measurement of light inside tissues. The directional
Density and Cost in Non-linear Control
The duality between cost and flow is well known and carefully studiedin several scientific fields, including economics and fluid mechanics. The purpose of this paper is to show how this duality relates to thebasic concepts of nonlinear control theory for ordinary differentialequations. A duality theorem for optimal control is derived using theHahn-Banach theorem. This puts focus on convexity aspect
Interaction between tryptophan residues and hydrophobically modified dextran - Effect on partitioning of peptides and proteins in aqueous two-phase systems
Hydrophobically modified dextrans, benzoyl dextran and valeryl dextran, have been used to study the interactions between tryptophan residues and benzoyl or valeryl groups by partitioning of tryptophan, tryptophan-tryptophan, (tryptophan)3, poly(lysine, tryptophan), β-galactosidase and lysozyme in polymer aqueous two-phase systems. The two-phase systems used were polyethylene glycol (PEG)-benzoyl d

Open Embedded Control
Embedded control devices today usually allow parameter changes, and possibly activation of different pre-implemented algorithms. Full reprogramming using the complete source code is not allowed for safety, efficiency, and proprietary reasons. For these reasons, embedded regulators are quite rigid and closed concerning the control structure. In several applications, like industrial robots, there is

Thermodynamics of membrane lipid hydration
Zwitterionic or polar lipids that form lamellar phases swell in the presence of water to take up between 10 and 30 water molecules per lipid. The degree of the water uptake depends both on the state of the alkyl chains, liquid or solid, and on the nature of the polar Group. The swelling behavior has been extensively characterized on the free-energy level through measuring the relation between the
Heat transfer from a slot air jet impinging on a circular cylinder
Heat transfer from a slot air jet impinging on a cylinder shaped food product placed on a solid surface in a semi-confined area as investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Simulations of a cylinder in cross flow with the k-epsilon, k-omega and SST models in CFX 5.5 were compared with measurements in the literature. The SST model predicts the heat transfer better than the other models
Personality: A vulnerability factor in rhinitis?
Abstract: Personality traits were assessed in 63 patients with persistent allergic or non-allergic rhinitis with the Karolinska Scales of Personality, developed with the aim of measuring psychobiological vulnerability factors, and were compared with a reference group comprising a random sample of 400 sex- and age-stratified subjects. The patients' personality profile differed slightly - within one
Automatic fermentation control based on a real-time in situ SIRE (R) biosensor regulated glucose feed
Monitoring and regulation of fermentations is of a paramount industrial and academic importance in order to keep conditions optimal during the entire process. Established techniques employed today include HPLC and spectrophotometry, which both have the disadvantage that broth samples have to be drawn from the fermentor and that they often require sample pre-treatment. The objectives of this study
Svenskämnet som demokrati- och värdegrundsämne
The aim of this article is to illustrate the central position of Swedish as a schoolsubject with reference to questions of democracy, participation, and commonvalues. I argue that an expanded concept of language and text, which also comprises the aesthetic subjects, can change and broaden the subject of Swe-dish. In a historic perspective there has been a struggle between different ways of underst

CD1-dependent regulation of chronic central nervous system inflammation in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.
The existence of T cells restricted for the MHC I-like molecule CD1 is well established, but the function of these cells is still obscure; one implication is that CD1-dependent T cells regulate autoimmunity. In this study, we investigate their role in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model for multiple sclerosis, using CD1-deficient mice on a C57BL/6 background. We show t
The economic impact of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Sweden in 1980 and 1991
This study was carried out to estimate the direct and indirect costs associated with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Sweden in 1980 and 1991, and to identify trends in the use of outpatient care, drugs and inpatient care, and the development of temporary morbidity, permanent disability and mortality for asthma and COPD. Routinely published administrative and population d
Are Beautiful traffic environments safer than Ugly traffic environments?
To link aesthetics to traffic safety, the field of environmental psychology was consid-ered. A new model of driving behaviour was developed, based on Lewin’s (1951) equation, B = f (P,E) and by employing Küllers’ (1991) model of the basic emotional process. The employed model B = f (R(Road), U(Users), A(Task), P(Person)), states that driving behaviour (B) is related to the physical environment (R)
