The use and diagnostic yield of radiology in subjects with longstanding musculoskeletal pain : an eight year follow up

BACKGROUND: Longstanding musculoskeletal pain is common in the general population and associated with frequent use of health care. Plain radiography is a common diagnostic approach in these patients despite knowledge that the use in the investigation of musculoskeletal pain is associated with low diagnostic yield, substantial costs and high radiation exposure. The aim of this study was to assess t

Differing rates of antibody acquisition to merozoite antigens in malaria : Implications for immunity and surveillance

Antibodies play a key role in acquired human immunity to Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) malaria and target merozoites to reduce or prevent blood-stage replication and the development of disease. Merozoites present a complex array of antigens to the immune system, and currently, there is only a partial understanding of the targets of protective antibodies and how responses to different antigens are acq

Modeling of the SLIPI technique with the large scatterer approximation of the RTE

To overcome the blur when visualizing of the interior of a turbid media by means light-based methods, a technique called Structured Laser Illumination Planar Imaging (SLIPI) is employed. The method is based on a 'light coding' strategy to distinguish between directly and multiply scattered light, allowing the intensity from the latter to be suppressed by post-processing data. In this paper, we exp

Spotting Trees with Few Leaves

We show two results related to finding trees and paths in graphs. First, we show that in $O^*(1.657^k2^{l/2})$ time one can either find a $k$-vertex tree with $l$ leaves in an $n$-vertex undirected graph or conclude that such a tree does not exist. Our solution can be applied as a subroutine to solve the $k$-Internal Spanning Tree problem in $O^*(min(3.455^k, 1.946^n))$ time using polynomial space

Contemporary Scandinavian Cinema between Art and Commerce

With regard to Scandinavian cinema and television, the last decades have been marked by the unexpected international appeal and unforeseen longevity of Scandinavian crime or Nordic noir as it is sometimes labeled. This development has paved the way for ever increasing financial and artistic collaboration within the audiovisual industries, especially among the Scandinavian countries. But it has als

Distal Radius Fractures. Outcome and New Methods of Surgical Treatment

Ecological interactions in human modified landscapes : Landscape dependent remedies for the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem services

När arter minskar eller försvinner riskerar vi även aModern agricultural practices have led to an intensification of the agricultural landscape which has negatively affected both biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides. In my thesis I have used ecological theory of optimal foraging to try and explain how landscape structure, landscape composition and agricultural management can explain the loss of biodiversity and how remedies can effici

Dietary 2-oxoglutarate prevents bone loss caused by neonatal treatment with maximal dexamethasone dose

Synthetic glucocorticoids (GCs) are widely used in the variety of dosages for treatment of premature infants with chronic lung disease, respiratory distress syndrome, allergies, asthma, and other inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. Yet, adverse effects such as glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis and growth retardation are recognized. Conversely, 2-oxoglutarate (2-Ox), a precursor of glutamine,

A systematic review including meta-analysis of work environment and burnout symptoms

Background: Practitioners and decision makers in the medical and insurance systems need knowledge on the relationship between work exposures and burnout. Many burnout studies - original as well as reviews - restricted their analyses to emotional exhaustion or did not report results on cynicism, personal accomplishment or global burnout. To meet this need we carried out this review and meta-analyse

A decision tool to support appropriate referral for deep brain stimulation in Parkinson's disease

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) has been proven to be an effective treatment for patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD), it may be difficult for general neurologists to identify appropriate candidates for this procedure. We developed an electronic decision tool that can assist neurologists in deciding which PD patients should be referred for DBS considerati

Tumors of bone

Bone tumors constitute a heterogeneous group of neoplasms of skeletal origin. Benign cartilage tumors include osteochondroma, subungual exostosis, bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (BPOP), chondromas, synovial chondromatosis, chondroblastoma, and chondromyxoid fibroma. Ewing sarcomas, also known as primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET), are highly aggressive small cell round cel

Optimized in vitro and in vivo expression of proteorhodopsin : a seven-transmembrane proton pump

Proteorhodopsin is an integral membrane light-harvesting proton pump that is found in bacteria distributed throughout global surface waters. Here, we present a protocol for functional in vitro production of pR using a commercial cell-free synthesis system yielding 1.0mg purified protein per milliliter of cell lysate. We also present an optimized protocol for in vivo over-expression of pR in Escher
