A mean redshift of 2.8 for Swift gamma-ray bursts

The exceptionally high luminosities of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), gradually emerging as extremely useful probes of star formation, make them promising tools for exploration of the high-redshift Universe. Here we present a carefully selected sample of Swift GRBs, intended to estimate in an unbiased way the GRB mean redshift (z(mean)), constraints on the fraction of high-redshift bursts and an upper l

Influence of the Coulomb parameter U on partial densities of states of CuGeO3: Comparison with X-ray spectral data

The electronic structure of the strongly Coulomb correlated cuprate CuGeO3 has been calculated by the local-density-approximation method (LDA+U). The parameter U was varied from 0 to 8 eV. The results of the band-structure calculations are compared with experimental data obtained by means of X-ray photoelectron and resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy methods (Cu Lalpha and O Kalpha X-ray emission

Analytic expressions for the bit error probabilities of rate-1/2 memory 2 convolutional encoders

Analytic expressions for the exact bit error probabilities of rate R = 1/2, memory m = 2 convolutional encoders are derived for a maximum-likelihood (ML) decoder and transmission over the binary-symmetric channel (BSC). The resulting expressions are rational functions of the crossover probability of the BSC. In addition to classical nonsystematic encoders without feedback, we consider also recursi

Artificial Life Techniques for Load Balancing in Computational Grids

Load balancing is a very important and complex problem in computational grids. A computational grid differs from traditional high performance computing systems in the heterogeneity of the computing nodes and communication links, as well as background workloads that may be present in the computing nodes. There is a need to develop algorithms that could capture this complexity yet can be easily impl

Approximating the maximum clique minor and some subgraph homeomorphism problems.

We consider the “minor” and “homeomorphic” analogues of the maximum clique problem, i.e., the problems of determining the largest h such that the input graph (on n vertices) has a minor isomorphic to Kh or a subgraph homeomorphic to Kh, respectively, as well as the problem of finding the corresponding subgraphs. We term them as the maximum clique minor problem and the maximum homeomorphic clique p

On the elemental abundance and isotopic mixture of mercury in HgMn stars

Optical region spectra of 31 HgMn stars have been studied for the abundance and isotope mixture of mercury. In the course of the investigation the lines Hg I lambda 4358 and Hg Ii lambda lambda3984,6149 have been studied, with abundances established for all three lines in several HgMn stars. The mercury isotope mixture has been determined from high resolution spectra of the lambda 3984 line.Possib

Polychlorinated biphenyls in the air of southern Sweden - spatial and temporal variation

Polychlorinated biphenyls in the lower atmosphere were studied over a regional area covering approximately 11000 km(2) in southern Sweden. Sampling were performed in 1992-1993, continuously during one year, where samples from 11 sampling-sites (in all 260 samples) were analysed. PCB concentrations ranged over two order of magnitudes, 7-983 pg m(-3). Differences in PCB concentrations among the samp

Polygalacturonic acid/endo-polygalacturonase system: A kinetic study in batch reactors

The enzymatic depolymerization of the pectic substance polygalacturonic acid (PGA) is studied in batch reactor. The number-average molecular weight of native substrate is estimated, using a simple and quick technique, to be approximately 11.1 kDa, the polymeric chains consisting on average of 63 galacturonic acid units. The effect of enzyme concentration was studied varying biocatalyst loading fro
