Anharmonic resonances in the C-H stretch region of ethoxy adsorbed on W(110): vibrational spectroscopy and calculations

We show that it is possible to understand and interpret the complex and rich C-H stretch region in the vibrational spectrum of ethoxy adsorbed on W(110) in terms of fundamental C-H stretch modes in Fermi resonance with C-H deformation overtones and combinations. The mode assignment is based on calculated C-13 isotopic shifts for an ethoxy-Cu-5 cluster. The coupling constants have been derived from

Abrupt increase in seasonal extreme precipitation at the Paleocene-Eocene boundary

A prominent increase in atmospheric CO, at the Paleocene-Eocene boundary, ca. 55 Ma, led to the warmest Earth of the Cenozoic for similar to 100 k.y. High-resolution studies of continental flood-plain sediment records across this boundary can provide crucial information on how the hydrological cycle responds to rapidly changing CO2. Here we show from continental records across the Paleocene-Eocene

Characterization of the annexin I gene and evaluation of its role in type 2 diabetes

In a previous study, we identified suggestive linkage between type 2 diabetes and a locus on chromosome 9p13-q21. This region contains the gene annexin I (ANXA1), encoding a protein suggested to be involved in both insulin secretion and insulin action. In this study, we sequenced the exon/intron boundaries of the human ANXA1 gene and performed mutation screening in 41 individuals from the initial

Young today-adult tomorrow! Studies on physical status, physical activity, attitudes, and self-perception in children and adolescents

The aim was to gain knowledge of young people's physical status and physical activity, and to further the understanding of the role of school physical education in a salutogenic public health perspective. Two studies were performed in southern Sweden. Study 1 was performed in 1996 among 301 adolescents aged 16-19 in upper secondary school. It comprised three parts: a questionnaire, seven physical

Soil carbon sequestration in degraded semiarid agro-ecosystems - Perils and Potentials

The Kyoto Protocol opens new possibilities for using the biosphere as a carbon sink. Using agro-ecosystems as carbon sinks may be the most appropriate practice from both environmental and socioeconomic points of view. Degraded agro-ecosystems in Africa might benefit significantly from the improved land management that would be part of a carbon sequestration program. There are vast areas of these a

Uncompensated blood loss is not tolerated during acute normovolemic hemodilution in anesthetized pigs

Clinically, hemodilution to a hematocrit of 9% has been studied, but the effects of hypovolemia during this degree of hemodilution have not been elucidated. We studied the response to blood loss during extreme hemodilution and evaluated indicators of hypovolemia. Systemic and myocardial hemodynamics, oxygen transport, and blood lactate concentrations were measured in 12 anesthetized pigs exposed t

Which cancer patients die in nursing homes? Quality of life, medical and sociodemographic characteristics

In this study, cancer patients' characteristics associated with death in nursing homes were explored. The study sample included 395 cancer patients who had participated in a trial of palliative care, 260 ( 66%) patients died in hospital, 80 (20%) at home and 55 (14%) in nursing homes. Health-related quality of life was prospectively recorded using the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire. Death in nursing

Staff training and further development in place of redundancies: a Swedish example.

The Swedish government decided in 1994, as part of the so-called 50,000 Swedish crowns scheme, to set aside a portion of the labour market budget for the further training and retraining of local government and country council employees. The present article reports on the experiences of the training effort that took place in 1994–1995 and provides a theoretical framework for discussing staff traini

Bacteria-degraders as the base of an amperometric biosensor for detection of anionic surfactants

Several strains belonging to genera Pseudomonas and Achromobacter and characterized by the ability to degrade anionic surfactants were tested as potential bases of microbial biosensors for surfactant detection. For each strain the substrate specificity and stability of sensor signals were studied. The total amount of the substrates tested (including carbohydrates, alcohols, aromatics, organic acid

Are impacts of an exotic predator on a stream food web influenced by disturbance history?

Predatory species have been introduced to habitats spanning a wide range of environmental conditions. To better understand the consequences of predation in natural communities we need to examine how variations in abiotic factors modify the influence of predation. The effects of introduced predators may vary amongst habitats if natural disturbance affects the abundance and taxonomic composition of

Implementation Problems for Activated Sludge Controllers

The paper describes some problems that appear in the implementation of a computer control system in a wastewater treatment plant. The problems are related to the control authority of the actuators, the influence of the process design on the controller design, or the disturbance pattern. Some experience from two full scale activated sludge plants in Sweden are discussed.
