“You Can’t Influence Illness, But You Can Influence Everything Else”: Women’s Diverse Experiences of Important Resilience Aspects in the Context of Breast Cancer

Resilience comprises positive adaptation to stress and has been extensively studied in the context of breast cancer. Nevertheless, specific experiences of breast cancer survivors in relation to resilience are unknown. The aim of this study was to explore the diverse experiences of important resilience aspects in breast cancer survivors. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 25 breast cancer

Step Change in Improving the Accuracy of Nitrous Oxide Reference Materials for Underpinning Atmospheric Composition Measurements

We have employed a new approach to quantify the amount fraction of nitrous oxide in a synthetic air matrix gas used to prepare high-accuracy reference materials of the same component. Until now, this was the largest contributor to the measurement uncertainty of nitrous oxide in air reference materials at atmospheric amount fractions (∼330 nmol mol-1), as identified in a recent international compar

Investigations into the kinetics and thermodynamics of Sb(III) adsorption on goethite (α-FeOOH)

This study reports thermodynamic and kinetic data of Sb(III) adsorption from single metal solutions onto synthetic aqueous goethite (α-FeOOH). Batch equilibrium sorption experiments were carried out at 25 °C over a Sb:Fe molar range of 0.005-0.05 and using a goethite concentration of 0.44 g Fe/L. Experimental data were successfully modelled using Langmuir (R2 ≥ 0.891) and Freundlich (R2 ≥ 0.990) i

The Akiya Phenomenon, Revitalisation, and Resistance : Investigating Vacant Houses as a Tool for Repopulation in Rural Japan

This essay delves into the akiya (vacant houses) problem in Japan, using the phenomenon as a lens to discuss the larger issue of depopulation and repopulation of regional Japan. It builds on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Kochi Prefecture from February to April, 2023, where semi-structured interviews were conducted with official workers and local residents of depopulated areas. The study find

Boreas : A Sample Preparation-Coupled Laser Spectrometer System for Simultaneous High-Precision in Situ Analysis of δ13C and δ2H from Ambient Air Methane

We present a new instrument, "Boreas", a cryogen-free methane (CH4) preconcentration system coupled to a dual-laser spectrometer for making simultaneous measurements of δ13C(CH4) and δ2H(CH4) in ambient air. Excluding isotope ratio scale uncertainty, we estimate a typical standard measurement uncertainty for an ambient air sample of 0.07‰ for δ13C(CH4) and 0.9‰ for δ2H(CH4), which are the lowest r

The increasing atmospheric burden of the greenhouse gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)

We report a 40-year history of SF6 atmospheric mole fractions measured at the Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment (AGAGE) monitoring sites, combined with archived air samples, to determine emission estimates from 1978 to 2018. Previously we reported a global emission rate of 7.3±0.6 Gg yr-1 in 2008 and over the past decade emissions have continued to increase by about 24% to 9.04±0.35 Gg

Perfluorocyclobutane (PFC-318, c-C4F8) in the global atmosphere

We reconstruct atmospheric abundances of the potent greenhouse gas span classCombining double low line inline-formula span classCombining double low line inline-formula perfluorocyclobutane, perfluorocarbon PFC-318) from measurements of in situ, archived, firn, and aircraft air samples with precisions of span classCombining double low line inline-formula reported on the SIO-14 gravimetric calibrat

Pursuing intimacy in a surveillance regime: Fieldwork in communist Romania. : Submitted paper, special issue on espionage and surveillance, under review

Abstract: Field research in politically authoritarian contexts poses special problems for the ethnographic project of pursuing intimacy and trust. During my fieldwork in communist Romania, both up to my denial of entry in 1985, and during my subsequent public activities dealing with Romania up to 1989, I was various surveillance by Romanian security organs, who also interrogated and harassed by in

Lifestyled Business Practices : The entanglement of consumption and business in criminal gangs

The entanglement of business and consumption practices have been neglected in prior consumer research. We address this issue by developing the concept lifestyled business practice. Through a study of criminal gangs in Sweden we contribute by developing three main entanglements of business practice; hedonic structures, stylized intelligence and sonic monetizationThe entanglement of business and consumption practices have been neglected in prior consumer research. The Rage of the Subaltern : The Violencing Hand of the Market

This research project aims to explore and theorize the role of the Market in a hyperviolence-endorsing consumer culture. How does the subaltern speak through “gangfluencers” in a Global North welfare society, and how do affective intensities of consumer desire enact the violent consumer subject herein? This research project aims to explore and theorize the role of the Market in a hyperviolence-endorsing consumer culture. Impact of Wolfmet Tungsten Alloys as Parallel-Hole Collimator Material on Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography Image Quality and Functional Parameters : A Simulating Medical Imaging Nuclear Detectors Monte Carlo Study

Objectives Collimators have a significant role in image quality and detectability in single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging. Using an appropriate alloy that effectively absorbs scattered photons, without induced secondary x-rays, and with proper rigidity and weight may provide an effective approach to the image improvement that conventionally collimators made of lead (Pb). Fostering trust – a qualitative outcome study of psychodynamic group and individual psychotherapy for refugees with PTSD

Background: Refugees and asylum-seekers have an elevated risk of mental health issues, such as depression and posttraumatic stress. Qualitative outcome studies can contribute by offering insight into patients’ experiences of what they find beneficial and how they undergo the process of recovery. This study aligns with the small body of qualitative research focusing on refugees’ perspectives of psy

Post-acute COVID-19 syndrome : prevalence of peripheral microvascular endothelial dysfunction and associations with NT-proBNP dynamics

BACKGROUND: Post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS) has been linked to microvascular endothelial dysfunction as a potential underlying pathomechanism and can manifest even following a mild course of the initial infection. Prevalence of microvascular endothelial dysfunction and circulating natriuretic peptides in such PACS patients remains unknown.METHODS AND RESULTS: This prospective, cross-sectional

Frequency and spectrum of mutations in human sperm measured using duplex sequencing correlate with trio-based de novo mutation analyses

De novo mutations (DNMs) are drivers of genetic disorders. However, the study of DNMs is hampered by technological limitations preventing accurate quantification of ultra-rare mutations. Duplex Sequencing (DS) theoretically has < 1 error/billion base-pairs (bp). To determine the DS utility to quantify and characterize DNMs, we analyzed DNA from blood and spermatozoa from six healthy, 18-year-old S
