dUTPase from the retrovirus equine infectious anemia virus: specificity, turnover and inhibition

The kinetic properties of dUTPase from equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) were investigated. KM (1.1 [plusmn] 0.1 [mu ]M) and kcat (25 s[minus ]1) were found to be independent of pH in the neutral pH range. Above pH 8.0, KM increases slightly. Below pH 6.0, the enzyme is rapidly deactivated. Detergent was found to enhance activity, leaving KM and kcat unaffected. Compared to the Escherichia col

On the limb darkening, spectral energy distribution, and temperature structure of procyon

We have fit synthetic visibilities from three-dimensional ((COBOLD)-B-5+PHOENIX) and one-dimensional (PHOENIX, ATLAS 12) model stellar atmospheres of Procyon (F5 IV) to high-precision interferometric data from the VLT Interferometer (K band) and from the Mark III interferometer (500 and 800 nm). These data sets provide a test of theoretical wavelength-dependent limb-darkening predictions. The work

A morphometric study of the effect of bilateral cervical sympathetic ganglionectomy on the architecture of pial arteries in spontaneously hypertensive and normotensive rats

The influence of the cranial sympathetic nerves on the architecture of pial arteries in normo- and hypertension was examined. For this purpose the effect of bilateral superior cervical ganglionectomy was evaluated in normotensive rats (WKY) and stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP). The operations were performed at the age of 1 wk, which is just prior to the onset of ganglionic tran

Prognostic laboratory markers of joint damage in rheumatoid arthritis.

Objective: To investigate whether determination of a set of laboratory markers at baseline provides prognostic information on joint damage in hands and feet in rheumatoid arthritis. Methods: 183 patients with early rheumatoid arthritis included in a prospective study were examined. Radiographic changes in hands and feet at 5 and 10 years after inclusion were evaluated (Larsen). The markers analyse

The use of the R6 transgenic mouse models of Huntington's disease in attempts to develop novel therapeutic strategies.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a genetic neurodegenerative disorder. Since identification of the disease-causing gene in 1993, a number of genetically modified animal models of HD have been generated. The first transgenic mouse models, R6/1 and R6/2 lines, were established 8 years ago. The R6/2 mice have been the best characterized and the most widely used model to study pathogenesis of HD and thera

Test Resource Partitioning and Optimization for SOC Designs

We propose a test resource partitioning and optimization technique for core-based designs. Our technique includes test set selection and test resource floor-planning with the aim of minimizing the total test application time and the routing of the added TAM (test access mechanism) wires. A feature of our approach is that it pinpoints bottlenecks that are likely to limit the test solution, which is

Travel Report from Australia and China

The report gives a summary of Björn Wittenmark's visits to China and Australia during the academic year1986 /87 . An overview of the research is given together with a summary of impressions during visits at differentuniversities.

Maximum spin aligned states in Ag-98(47)51

New excited states have been observed in the neutron deficient isotope Ag-98 following the Ni-58+Cr-50-->Te-108* heavy-ion reaction. One of these states may be interpreted as a maximum spin aligned state of the pi g(9/2)(-3) nu vg(7/2) configuration. Other possible interpretations within the nuclear shell model are discussed as well.

FeGa3 and RuGa3: Semiconducting intermetallic compounds

The intermetallic compounds FeGa3 and RuGa3 were prepared from the elements using a Ga flux and their structures were refined from single-crystal X-ray data. Both compounds crystallize with the FeGa3 structure type (tetragonal, space group P4(2)/mnm, Z=4). Electrical resistivity measurements revealed a semiconducting behavior for FeGa3 and RuGa3, which is in contrast to the good metallic conductiv

Deletion of a major neutralizing epitope of human papillomavirus type 16 virus-like particles.

Human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) is a major cause of human cancer. Effective prophylactic vaccines are based on type-specific neutralizing antibodies. A major neutralizing epitope has been defined by the monoclonal antibody H16.V5. To investigate the importance of this epitope for overall immunogenicity of HPV-16, HPV-16 virus-like particles devoid of the H16.V5 epitope were engineered by sit

Evaluation of the tissue microarray technique for immunohistochemical analysis in rectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Immunohistochemical staining for tumor-associated proteins is widely used for the identification of novel prognostic markers. Recently, a tissue-conserving, high-throughput technique, tissue microarray, has been introduced. This technique uses 0.6-mm tissue core biopsy specimens, 500 to 1000 of which are brought into a new paraffin array block, which can be sectioned up to 100 times. M

A human phenome-interactome network of protein complexes implicated in genetic disorders

We performed a systematic, large-scale analysis of human protein complexes comprising gene products implicated in many different categories of human disease to create a phenome-interactome network. This was done by integrating quality-controlled interactions of human proteins with a validated, computationally derived phenotype similarity score, permitting identification of previously unknown compl

Graded response to GABA by native extrasynaptic GABA(A) receptors

GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian CNS. GABA in the brain is commonly associated with a fast, point-to-point form of signalling called synaptic transmission (phasic inhibition), but there is growing evidence that GABA participates in another, slower and more diffuse form of signalling often referred to as tonic inhibition. Unresolved questions regarding tonic neuronal in

Geometric Models of Similarity

Avhandlingen tar uThis dissertation examines and discusses some phenomena related to the geometric representation of similarity. It takes its inspiration from the existing body of empirical research within the fields of perceptual and cognitive psychology, but also connects to certain areas of machine learning. The problems discussed concern the modelling of information integration behavior when concepts like asym
