Swelling and mass transport properties of nanocellulose-HPMC composite films

Composite films were sprayed from mixtures of water soluble hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and either nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) or cellulose nanocrystals (CNC). Fiber diameter was similar for both nanocelluloses but fiber length was several μm for NFC and about 200 nm for CNC. Films were characterized for morphology, swelling, mass loss and transport properties. NFC-HPMC films swelled

Pre-plaque conformational changes in Alzheimer's disease-linked Aβ and APP

Reducing levels of the aggregation-prone Aβ peptide that accumulates in the brain with Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been a major target of experimental therapies. An alternative approach may be to stabilize the physiological conformation of Aβ. To date, the physiological state of Aβ in brain remains unclear, since the available methods used to process brain tissue for determination of Aβ aggregate

Symbiosis revisited : Phosphorus and acid buffering stimulate N2 fixation but not Sphagnum growth

In pristine Sphagnum-dominated peatlands, (di)nitrogen (N2) fixing (diazotrophic) microbial communities associated with Sphagnum mosses contribute substantially to the total nitrogen input, increasing carbon sequestration. The rates of symbiotic nitrogen fixation reported for Sphagnum peatlands, are, however, highly variable, and experimental work on regulating factors that can mechanistically exp

Measuring hypnotizability is an integral part of hypnosis research and is also relevant for predicting effectiveness of hypnosis-based therapies. The Elkins Hypnotizability Scale (EHS) was designed to meet the needs of modern hypnosis research and clinical practice. Reliability, validity, and normative data were explored by subjecting 230 participants to the EHS and Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibilit

Duration of disease does not equally influence all aspects of quality of life in Parkinson's disease

Health related quality of life (HRQoL) is negatively impacted in patients suffering from Parkinson's disease (PD). For the specific components that comprise HRQoL, the relationship between clinical variables, such as disease duration, is not fully characterized. In this cross-sectional study (n = 302), self-reported HRQoL on the Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) was evaluated as a global

Re-Evaluation of the Psychometric Properties of the Maternal–Fetal Attachment Scale in a Hungarian Sample

Objective To explore the factor structure of the Maternal–Fetal Attachment Scale (MFAS) and investigate its psychosocial and demographic correlates in a Hungarian sample. Design Cross-sectional survey. Setting Sonography clinic in a metropolitan area. Participants One hundred fourteen women over the age of 18 years in the second or third trimesters of pregnancy. Methods Participants completed the

Hypnosis for Acute Procedural Pain : A Critical Review

Clinical evidence for the effectiveness of hypnosis in the treatment of acute procedural pain was critically evaluated based on reports from randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs). Results from the 29 RCTs meeting inclusion criteria suggest that hypnosis decreases pain compared to standard care and attention control groups and that it is at least as effective as comparable adjunct psychologi

Feature-based coding system : A new way of characterizing hypnosis styles

In this pilot study, the authors introduce a new system to assess hypnosis style. The Feature-Based Coding System (FBCS) comprises 24 standard individual hypnosis sessions, which were videotaped and coded according to both a previous and the new coding system. In addition, both subjects and hypnotists filled the Archaic Involvement Measure (AIM), the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI),

An empirical analysis of the methodology of automatic imitation research in a strategic context

Since the discovery of the mirror neuron system, it has been proposed that the automatic tendency to copy observed actions exists in humans and that this mechanism might be responsible for a range of social behavior. A strong argument for automatic behavior can be made when actions are executed against motivation to do otherwise. Strategic games in which imitation is disadvantageous serve as ideal

Effects of patient education and therapeutic suggestions on cataract surgery patients : A randomized controlled clinical trial

Objective: This paper describes a randomized controlled single blind study testing the effects of a patient education intervention combined with positive therapeutic suggestions on anxiety for cataract surgery patients. Methods: 84 patients participated in the study. Physiological and behavioral indicators of anxiety were compared between a regularly treated control and an intervention group recei

There is a reoccurring question in medical practice: do positive attitude and communication of the medical staff make any difference? Aim: Our aim is to present a comprehensive image of the medically relevant effects of positive suggestions by reviewing the recent literature. Methods: We review the studies measuring the effects of suggestive communication of the past 20 years. In cases of studies
