An Early Jurassic age for the Puchezh-Katunki impact structure (Russia) based on 40Ar/39Ar data and palynology
The Puchezh-Katunki impact structure, 40–80 km in diameter, located ~400 km northeast of Moscow (Russia), has a poorly constrained age between ~164 and 203 Ma (most commonly quoted as 167 ± 3 Ma). Due to its relatively large size, the Puchezh-Katunki structure has been a prime candidate for discussions on the link between hypervelocity impacts and extinction events. Here, we present new 40Ar/39Ar
On stochastic imitation dynamics in large-scale networks
We consider a broad class of stochastic imitation dynamics over networks, encompassing several well known learning models such as the replicator dynamics. In the considered models, players have no global information about the game structure: they only know their own current utility and the one of neighbor players contacted through pairwise interactions in a network. In response to this information

Librarian-academic collaboration: the role of strategic communication and relationship management
Information literacy and critical thinking skills are essential in the information age towards achieving academic success and being adequately skilled for lifelong learning. Academic libraries have an indispensable role to play in this regard. Collaboration between librarians and academics is important to ensure both effective information-literacy training and service provision to students and to
A neurotoxin that specifically targets Anopheles mosquitoes
Clostridial neurotoxins, including tetanus and botulinum neurotoxins, generally target vertebrates. We show here that this family of toxins has a much broader host spectrum, by identifying PMP1, a clostridial-like neurotoxin that selectively targets anopheline mosquitoes. Isolation of PMP1 from Paraclostridium bifermentans strains collected in anopheline endemic areas on two continents indicates i

Surgical and not analgesic technique affects postoperative inflammation following colorectal cancer surgery : a prospective, randomized study
AIM: Epidural analgesia reduces the surgical stress response. However, its effect on pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in the genesis of inflammation following major abdominal surgery remains unclear. Our main objective was to elucidate whether perioperative epidural analgesia prevents the inflammatory response following colorectal cancer surgery.METHODS: Ninety-six patients scheduled for open

Variation of carbon contents in eelgrass (Zostera marina) sediments implied from depth profiles
Seagrass meadows are able to store significant amounts of organic carbon in their underlying sediment, but global estimates are uncertain partly owing to spatio-temporal heterogeneity between and within areas and species. In order to provide robust estimates, there is a need to better understand the fate of, and mechanisms behind, organic carbon storage. In this observational study, we analyse a s
Evidence for Faster X Chromosome Evolution in Spiders
In species with chromosomal sex determination, X chromosomes are predicted to evolve faster than autosomes becauseof positive selection on recessive alleles or weak purifying selection. We investigated X chromosome evolution inStegodyphus spiders that differ in mating system, sex ratio, and population dynamics. We assigned scaffolds to Xchromosomes and autosomes using a novel method based on flow In species with chromosomal sex determination, X chromosomes are predicted to evolve faster than autosomes because of positive selection on recessive alleles or weak purifying selection. Rare orbital manifestations and vasculitis, giant cell arteritis or side effects of zoledronic acid infusion?
Giant cell arteritis (GCA), affects an age group where osteoporosis is common. A well-established treatment for osteoporosis is medication with bisphosphonates. Bisphosphonates are overall well-tolerated but can trigger several different acute inflammatory reactions with systemic features and symptoms and signs from the ocular and musculoskeletal system, all of which resemble those of GCA. Here is
Ensembles of codes over Abelian groups
In this paper we study ensembles of Abelian group codes on symmetric channels. Our main example is the AWGN channel where the inputs are restricted to a GU constellation admitting ℤm as a generating group. For codes which are ℤm-free modules, we prove a sort of Shannon theorem which exactly characterizes which are the rates for which reliable transmission is possible. In particular we prove that f

Evaluation of methods for automated Hemifield analysis in perimetry
A new aid to perimetric analysis, the Glaucoma Hemifield Test, primarily evaluates up-down differences in automated static visual field tests. We analyzed the visual fields of 163 eyes of 163 normal subjects and 77 eyes of 77 patients with glaucoma diagnosed on bases other than perimetry using the Glaucoma Hemifield Test and a similar, previously developed, hemifield analysis method. The performan
