A Survey of Adaptive Control Applications

This paper gives examples of industrial adaptive controllers and of true industrial applications of adaptive control. Adaptive control algorithms are found in single-loop controllers as well as in distributed control systems. The applications are from a wide range of industries, from process control to engine control in cars.

Minimum Variance Prediction for Linear Time-Varying Systems

In this paper we study the problem of minimum variance prediction for linear time-varying systems. We consider the standard time-varying autoregression moving average (ARMA) model and develop a predictor which guarantees minimum variance prediction for a large class of linear time-varying systems. The predictor is developed based on a pseudocommutation technique for dealing with noncommutativity o

On the Choice of Design Method in Adaptive Control

The selections of design method and design specifications for sampled-data adaptive controllers are discussed. The following issues are considered: choice of design method, choice and effect of sampling frequency and antialiasing filters, interplay between estimation and design, and implementation aspects and numerics.

Prehatching temperatures drive inter-annual cohort differences in great tit metabolism

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) constitutes the lowest metabolic rate in a resting animal and is, therefore, considered to reflect the energetic cost of maintenance in endotherms. BMR is a reversible plastic trait that changes with environmental and ecological circumstances, albeit being heritable and susceptible to selection. Inter-individual variation within populations of small birds is substantial,

Benchmark data and model independent event classification for the large hadron collider

We describe the outcome of a data challenge conducted as part of the Dark Machines (https://www.darkmachines.org) initiative and the Les Houches 2019 workshop on Physics at TeV colliders. The challenged aims to detect signals of new physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) using unsupervised machine learning algorithms. First, we propose how an anomaly score could be implemented to define model-

Modeling and Control for Improved Predictability of Cloud Applications

Cloud computing has emerged as a key technology in the latest decade and continues to be applied to manage the computing needs of new domains. As a result, the requirements on predictable behavior in the cloud increase, thus the hosted applications need to be recognized as both fault-tolerant and responsive even under difficult conditions. In this thesis, new modeling methods and decision-making st

Perioperative aspects of resection for colorectal liver metastases. Quality of life, performance status and incisional hernia .

BackgroundLiver metastases are a common consequence of colorectal cancer. When feasible, surgical resection is first-line treatment. Synchronous disease can be treated with different strategies. Traditionally, the primary tumour is resected first followed by resection of the liver metastases (bowel-first). The other option, which is increasing, is the liver-first strategy, where resection of the l

A European Civil Society Elite? : Analysing Capital and Drama at the European Economic and Social Committee

Contributing to research on civil society elites in the EU context, this articlefocuses on the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). It exploreswho the main actors are, what roles they play, and what resources they use, value, and compete for in this arena. The theoretical starting points aregrounded in Bourdieu’s notions of field and capital and a Goffmanesqueapproach to drama. Based on s

Frequency domain sensitivity shaping using overparametrized controllers

A frequency domain, weighted least squares, sensitivity function shaping procedure is presented. Pole placement is used as the basic servo design procedure. Controller overparametrization gives the degree of freedom for shaping the sensitivity function. A benchmark design example shows the capabilities of the method. The computation is simple making the design suitable for adaptive control.

Influence of pulsed electric field-assisted dehydration on the volatile compounds of basil leaves

Pulsed electric field (PEF) was applied to basil leaves prior air drying at 40 °C. The parameters of the electric treatment were designed in such a way that (i) electroporated the tissue reversibly, provoking a permanent opening of the stomatal guard cells and (ii) electroporated the tissue irreversibly, damaging the cells. Treated leaves lost some volatile compounds due to both PEF treatments, pr

Investigation on magnetic force and buoyancy force on flow and heat transfer of Al2O3-water nanofluid at various temperature-dependent thermophysical models by a novel PLBM

A novel preconditioned lattice Boltzmann method (PLBM) is applied to investigate the thermo-hydrodynamic characteristics of Al2O3-water nanofluid with various temperature-dependent thermophysical properties and slip boundary conditions in a microchannel. Also, the effects of a magnetic field force, buoyancy force, and volume fraction of nanoparticles are analyzed, respectively. The theoretical lev

“Landscape of Stress” for Sheep Owners in the Swedish Wolf Region

Farmers who keep livestock in large carnivore areas are exposed to threat of predation directly impacting on finances and workload as well as the associated psychological stress indirectly impacting on farmers well-being. So far, little is known about such stress responses. The concept of “stress” or “stress reaction” is often used as an undifferentiated umbrella concept for the experience of nega

On the function of lead (Pb) in machining brass alloys

Lead has traditionally been added to brass alloys to achieve high machinability, but the exact mechanisms at work are still debated. Lead-free brass alternatives could be developed if these mechanisms were better understood. Accordingly, machinability characteristics were investigated for two brass alloys with similar mechanical properties and phase composition, but with very different machining c

The gender-resilience nexus in peace building : the quest for sustainable peace

Resilience and gender have become new buzzwords for expressing renewal in peacebuilding. This article unpacks the gender-resilience nexus in theory and analyses global trends and variation in peacebuilding policy and practice. It advances an analytical framework based on three central pillars of peacebuilding: process, outcome, and expertise. A comprehensive analysis of 49 international peacebuild
