Anisotropic mesoporous silica/microgel core-shell responsive particles

Hybrid anisotropic microgels were synthesised using mesoporous silica as core particles. By finely controlling the synthesis conditions, the latter can be obtained with different shapes such as platelets, primary particles or rods. Using the core particles as seeds for precipitation polymerisation, a crosslinked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgel shell could be grown at the surface, con

Natural orbitals in multiconfiguration calculations of hyperfine-structure parameters

We are reinvestigating the hyperfine structure of sodium using a fully relativistic multiconfiguration approach. In the fully relativistic approach, the computational strategy somewhat differs from the original nonrelativistic counterpart used by P. Jönsson, Phys. Rev. A 53, 4021 (1996)PLRAAN1050-294710.1103/PhysRevA.53.4021. Numerical instabilities force us to use a layer-by-layer approach that h

Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors use and risk for mortality and metastases among male patients with colorectal cancer

Phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors are suggested to have anti-tumor effects and to inhibit surgery-induced immunosuppression. We aimed to explore whether post-diagnostic use of PDE5 inhibitors was associated with a better prognosis among male patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) and the role of open surgery in the association. Here we show that post-diagnostic use of PDE5 inhibitors is associa

Single cell transcriptomics identifies stem cell-derived graft composition in a model of Parkinson’s disease

Cell replacement is a long-standing and realistic goal for the treatment of Parkinsonʼs disease (PD). Cells for transplantation can be obtained from fetal brain tissue or from stem cells. However, after transplantation, dopamine (DA) neurons are seen to be a minor component of grafts, and it has remained difficult to determine the identity of other cell types. Here, we report analysis by single-ce

VEGF synthesis and VEGF receptor 2 expression in patients with bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome after lung transplantation

OBJECTIVES: Chronic lung allograft dysfunction including Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) is common after lung transplantation. Histologically, BOS is recognized as fibrotic lesions with accumulated extracellular matrix (ECM) in small airways. Lung fibroblasts are major producers of ECM and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). In this study we hypothesize that VEGF is involved in BOS

RIFM fragrance ingredient safety assessment, cinnamyl alcohol, CAS Registry Number 104-54-1

The existing information supports the use of this material as described in this safety assessment. Cinnamyl alcohol was evaluated for genotoxicity, repeated dose toxicity, developmental toxicity, reproductive toxicity, local respiratory toxicity, phototoxicity, skin sensitization, and environmental safety. Data show that cinnamyl alcohol is not genotoxic. Data on read-across analog cinnamaldehyde

A novel method for creatinine adjustment makes the revised Lund–Malmö GFR estimating equation applicable in children

The aim of this study was to establish creatinine growth curves separately for males and females that can be used to adjust childhood levels of serum creatinine to corresponding adult levels. Linear regression with fractional polynomials of age as independent variable was used to construct creatinine growth curves for a reference cohort (n = 83,157 samples from Belgium and Sweden, age 2–40 years).

Estimating the Direct Effect between Dietary Macronutrients and Cardiometabolic Disease, Accounting for Mediation by Adiposity and Physical Activity

Assessing the causal effects of individual dietary macronutrients and cardiometabolic disease is challenging owing to the complexity to distinguish direct effects from those mediated or confounded by other factors. To estimate these effects, intake of protein, carbohydrate, sugar, fat, and its subtypes were obtained using food frequency data derived from a Swedish population-based cohort (n~60,000

Some Aspects on Pole-Placement Design

Pole-placement design for SISO systems are discussed in input-output formulation. It is shown how the different design parameters influence the performance of the closed loop system. For instance, the influence of sampling period, anti-aliasing filter, and desired closed loop performance are treated in detail. Rules of thumb for the choice of the different parameters are given.

Analysis of time delays in synchronous and asynchronous control loops

In this paper we describe how to determine the time delays caused by synchronous and asynchronous control loops. These time delays can vary in a quite irregular way and can cause problems for the control loops closed over a communication network of, for instance, field-buses. Different setups allowing an arbitrary number of communication layers are analyzed. The theoretical derivations are illustr

Elucidating the child’s perspective in health promotion: children’s experiences of child-centred health dialogue in Sweden

Promoting young children's health through health promotion activities is an investment for the future. In the Child Health Services in the south of Sweden a structured Child-Centred Health Dialogue (CCHD) directed to all 4-year-old children was developed using illustrations based on the most important health messages associated with the promotion of healthy lifestyle in preschool children. The aim

Biofilm formation on three different endotracheal tubes : a prospective clinical trial

BACKGROUND: Biofilm formation on endotracheal tubes (ETTs) is an early and frequent event in mechanically ventilated patients. The biofilm is believed to act as a reservoir for infecting microorganisms and thereby contribute to development and relapses of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Once a biofilm has formed on an ETT surface, it is difficult to eradicate. This clinical study aimed to c

Hybrid tourist information search German tourists' combination of digital and analogue information channels

n a rapidly digitalizing world, both tourism actors and researchers are striving to keep pace with developments in tourist information search. This is not an easy task, as research results are pointing at different directions. Moreover, while tourism research is indicating the importance of analogue and digital information sources in parallel, tourism actors focus mainly on digital development. Risk of local recurrence of rectal cancer and circumferential resection margin : population-based cohort study

Background: A circumferential resection margin (CRM) of 1·0 mm or less after rectal cancer surgery is thought to increase the risk of local recurrence (LR). This retrospective population-based study examined how CRM distance affects the LR risk. Methods: Data from the Swedish Colorectal Cancer Registry were used in a retrospective analysis of rectal cancers resected between 2005 and 2013. The prim

Local adaptation to UV radiation in zooplankton : a behavioral and physiological approach

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is recognized as a driving force for phenotypic divergence. Here, we aim at assessing the ability of zooplankton to induce UVR tolerance and disentangle the relative importance of local adaptations behind the expression of such tolerance. Two populations of Daphnia pulex, derived from environments strongly differing in UVR conditions, were exposed to UVR for 70 d to ind

Land cover data of Upper Parana River Basin, South America, at high spatial resolution

This study presents a new land cover map for the Upper Paraná River Basin (UPRB-2015), with high spatial resolution (30 m), and a high number of calibration and validation sites. To the new map, 50 Landsat-8 scenes were classified with the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm and their level of agreement was assessed using overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient. The generated map was compared by
